No, I always had the opinion that his friend is a fucking asshole....it's just when he was so pissed off and venting...I just figured the last thing he needed to hear was more negativity.

For example:
A friend and him have a falling out.
I listen to him vent about it.
At first I try to offer an objective perspective...y'know there's two sides to every story. I'll try to see it from the friend's POV and offer some insight that way. Calm him down a little...
At this point, he is completely irrational, not having it whatsoever. He makes a good argument.
I'm loyal to him, so I agree. Then I'm like yeah, you're right, "fuck that asshole" and make some points of my own why his friend is being sucky.
NOW there's a 180 that occurs. He goes back to semi-defending his friend. :/I have a headache. Really.
It's the scales balancing. Who knows he is having a bit of fun while at it. And he wants to come to a moral decision whether his friend is a baddie. You tipped the scales too far for his liking so he is balancing it back. Sometimes he does it to irritate you to tone down your positivity. In libra world, too much of anything isnt good. 😛

Yes you are right his friend may not be as your Libra sees him, but you changed your opionion on the situation to suite his mood read your original post. You changed your mind to bend to what your Libra expected from you and wanted you to think.
