I think he wanted you to feel like he has over the last three years... so when you finally agreed to go out with him, he had a chance to put you in your place...so to speak. Probably made him feel good....and now, he doesn't know how to handle it when he see's you... my bet is he would really like a relationship, but is afraid... give it some time, and see how it plays out... maybe he'll attempt asking you out again if you show you are no longer interested.
