Because social dynamics are dependent upon the people and circumstance, the state of being alpha or beta is not a fixed state and one's status may change depending on the company and situation.
how can you tell whether you're an alpha or beta? like is there a test on line you can take to determine whether or not you're an alpha? in this case, i don't think i'm an alpha.
Generally speaking, alpha males and females tend to garner the adoration, attention, and respect of those around them. Think Robert Downey whenever he enters a room or is conducting an interview. There are various hints like, something isn't interesting if the alpha isn't enthused to discuss it, so the subject is typically changed in order to please the alpha. Ideas aren't agreed on until the alpha speaks up, then everyone else falls in line, an attractive item isn't adored until the alpha gives his or her stamp of approval. All of these things are independent of how an individual in the group may feel because the group unconsciously rallies around the alpha. Also, the alpha is often positioned in "the head of a pack" and not deliberately. They are typically at the head of the table or at the center of a gathering group of people, even if they didn't choose to be.
Alpha males get a lot of female attention and alpha females get a lot of male adoration.
From my perspective, I know a man is alpha when I respect him, feel girly around him,and find myself wanting to impress him somehow. A woman is alpha when I respect her and don't mind giving her credit.
That's another thing: whether your alpha is dependent on whether or not the people around you accept you as such. It begins with you, but it ends with them. It's akin to how a talented singer may be talented, but unless the industry agrees, the singer will never be a rockstar. We see it all the time in sports - a player is successful and excudes alpha status only to lose that alpha "glow" when they have a blunder.
This is what I've gathered from observing people.

wow. how powerful and incredible. i don't want to think im a leader even tho i have people working for me. but i don't want to say that makes me an alpha. i have musicaltalents but i hardly ever get my lazy butt out there and perform. shucks i dunno. i might be a beta male.
