The Bhutanese believe that back in the 15th or 16th century the Divine Lama Drukpa Kunley would hit evil spirits with his penis and turn them into protective deities. Thus, they believe that the phallic symbol wards off evil spirits and is therefore painted on most homes and buildings.
They also hang carvings from the eves of their homes as well as on fence posts among other locations.
