I'm not gonna lie. I never had this problem lolThe only reason why I may have misremembered a few things is because of other people constantly repeating the thing to me. So I remember that.
Especially life is like a box of chocolates. I heard that misquote more than I've seen the film.
Other than that *shrugs*
I blame humans.
I am not a native English speaker. I had never read or heard the phrase before, I couldn't misremember it. The first time I ever heard it is when I watched the movie. I clearly remember it was "is".

I remember checking "Courteney"'s chart on astrotheme, typing "courtney" on the search bar. I would have remembered if I misspelled it. I didn't.

Yes, it used to be Courtney. In google trends it shows that Courtney Cox was the dominant name until jan. 2013. Afther that date more people searched for Courteney Cox.
People who have watched friends hundreds of times, can confirm it was Courtney not Courteney.
The weird extra e should make it easier to remember, it's more noticeable. Especially for the fans
