There’s much talk about the Metaverse lately although the idea itself is quite old and has even been put into a virtual world already (maybe someone remembers Second Life or similar constructs).

Now, some of that talk is about purely online relationships, virtual babies, AI that become a person. I wonder how many people would subscribe for something like that though from a psychological point of view there’s no difference between online or offline emotions, it’s just that meeting in person allows for so much more of course.

Do you think it’s possible that there will be a society one day that sees such things as the new normal?

I just think it will created even bigger anti social issues.

Pretty soon you'll be able to walk into a virtual fast food restaurant , order, and have your food delivered without even taking off your headset.

Crazy!

I was literally just getting ready to post the same thing. I just picture Wall-E when this topic gets brought up. I'll pass.

What if the future is even more dystopian like resources and environment make you stay home all the time with no fancy devices moving you around?

Call me pessimistic, but I would be more likely to imagine a world where the earth's geomagnetic poles reverse once again and it render's our power grid useless.

Instead of buying digital art to hang in an abstract room located in a far off server, I picture more of a society starting over from scratch with little concrete information on where to begin. We don't write books like we used to, in favor of digital. Libraries don't even do the Dewey Decimal System anymore to help locate the few books we do write. Where people realize their food has to be raised and killed, and not just appears in stores.

Shifting of the poles is a given. Just with the amount of people who live today a collapse of civilization would lead to many deaths, not only due to violence but also due to diseases and hunger. And if it gets nuclear I think there won’t be anyone left starting anew.

I know. I avoid anything Facebook though. But there are other products like that and even some with a better picture quality.

Nice topic. I've been having fears about the Metaverse for some time now. It's not just about NFT, commercial stores like Zara are already offering clothes for the virtual world. It seems as if they are trying to push a prepared agenda on people. Common sense would dictate that a virtual reality is, well, just a virtual reality. Like mIrc, my space, this forum, World of Warcraft...I mean, no matter how good of a life you have virtually, it's just a manmade simulation. But if you think about it, we, the generations before the smartphone are getting older, new ones are born into the world of technology, so maybe the concept of Metaverse feels more natural to them. The fact that Zuckerberg is behind the platform fuels my doubt and fear. I hope that we will remain human.
