This reminds me of a classic Harlan Ellison moment.

Exactly on point! I think there's a collective societal idea that too many often have that artists, writers, and creative types don't have a "real" profession, therefore, we should all be grateful for any attention given to us, anything at all that suggests we'll get more publicity or public face-time. Businesses, people who do legal work, medical work, etc. are somehow more accepted as people who should be paid for their time and work. Maybe the creative types have too long given free work in the hopes of getting noticed and rising in the ranks, and so we've perpetuated the problem. I'm glad a few aren't standing for it.

I don't like these kinds of look-how-much-of-a-smartass-I-am things where someone will post an exchange they had on the internet where they rewrite their messages to sound extremely smart and funny while the person they're trying to deface sounds like an idiot.
Not trying to defend that simon guy who might be a douche, but posting that kind of things makes you a douchebag too and isn't very professional.

Ugh! kept posting the wrong link.....3rd time is the charm 😛

As an artist I've had my fair share of requests for free art (logos, portraits, etc). I usually do the Crab disappearing act, but wish I had responded a little more like this guy did. Enjoy the exchange!

Thanks for sharing this link MA, but I would also like to see some of your artistic work if ever you find the courage (don't scuttle about) to show us 🙂

Kodak, I am. 2010 was the last time while married that I worked on art in a big way. It got so bad with the ex that I couldn't even focus for more than 5 minutes. In the 2 yrs since I left I've gotten my mojo back, slowly. Finally finished a commission last fall and am currently working on another, with a possible bigger commission waiting (plus the client has had major health turn for the worse, so I'm not going to deal with that one until he's more stable).

Here's the commission I finished most recently (side note...poodle hair made me want to pull my own hair out, but I loved the challenge):
