Unique Way of Memorizing Numbers

My mum, a Filipina with Chinese-Spanish ancestry, forced me at a young age to memorize all the Chinese zodiacs. I memorized them, including the elements. I don't know what it is about Chinese traditions but I guess it's their upbringing anyway. When I was 10 years old, my mum went even further by forcing me to memorize the years in which these animals fall starting from 1900 to 1999.

Since I love patterns, I didn't have a hard time memorizing all of them. It was so interesting to me that I got to even memorize those of the years 1000 to 1899. In few seconds, I could tell what animal falls in a certain year. For 1100, that was Dragon. For 1877, that was Ox. For 1511, that was Pig. And so on.

Come College time, when I finally got a cellphone, I would usually memorize the numbers of my friends using Chinese Zodiac. For example, 09273356478, these would be the steps I do:

For 0927, I would take out 27 since 09 is a number common to all cp numbers. 27 is the year of the rabbit.

For 3356, 33 is the year of the rooster and 56, the year of the monkey. I only considered the years 1900-99 because those were the years I memorized early on.

For 478, I would remember some Renaissance period year and will have Queen Isabel of Spain in mind because she ruled Castile and Leon from 1474 to 1504 so I would just have a picture of her while remembering 478.

Thanks so much, Elle. Yeah, animals are pretty easy to memorize for me. I like that 1999 was a Rabbit year. According to the Chinese, it was the "Year of the Magic Rabbit." 🙂
