I don't think we tolerate harshness, but directness for me is preferable. It's all in the delivery.

Then why do people find harshness inappropriate if it is required there. If I feel something in particular way, and if it's bad, then I can speak harsh. Why not? Why should I supress it? It does not make any sene. Harshness is part of communication.
