the basic idea is to avoid the activities that usually make you anxious or stressed out. Take a bubble bath, but go all out -- use lots of bubbles, light candles, stay in the tub too long. Read an entire book (pick something you enjoyed when you were younger). Try some relaxation exercises or yoga or meditation. Listen to calming music. If you don't want to be alone or if you can't be alone, think of fun activities you can do with others. Play games with your kids: run and jump with them. If your companions are adults, do the same! Go to a playground. Play board games. Buy a couple of inexpensive toys you liked as a kid and remember why you liked them

I find the best way to deal with such situations is to be proactive. Whenever I find myself cut out from the things around me, I feel like they are falling over me and I hardly can get out from under them. Therefore I act first and get only what I need and let the other pass, which at the end comes to your point:
