The Houston Police Department announced yesterday that it will work more closely with federal officials to identify illegal immigrants involved in crimes.
The new policy requires that police ask all arrested suspects whether they are citizens.
Anyone without identification will be fingerprinted and their criminal histories will be checked in a national database.
Officers are still barred from asking people who aren't under arrest about their immigration status. Critics say that restriction means Houston is still, in their words, a "sanctuary city" for illegal immigrants.
But city officials say the new policy will help identify and remove criminals from the streets.
Police will hold suspects for immigration officials if a background search shows that the suspect is accused of returning after being deported for a crime -- or if the suspect defied an order to leave the country.

Jruss, you are misunderstood; I believe you're reading that wrong.
You will not be fingerprinted if you have a DL. I'm not sure if this is implemented in Austin yet as it's just been implemented here in Houston as of yesterday. If you are arrested and don't have identification, you'll be fingerprinted and they'll be ran in NCIS and TCIS for criminal activity. Then and only then can HPD ask of your immigration status.
If you're pulled over for flipping off a cop, but have your ID, chances are you won't be arrested. 😉
