Taurus ex ignoring me

I am a virgo.
Wow let's just say that the beginning or our relationship was rocky. I was still seeing someone else and hadn't told him about it. He fell for me fast, after about two weeks and he found out about the other guy and told me I should break it off. I did because I obviously wanted to be with him. But I felt guilty about the other guy so I strung him along. A few months later, after I broke up with the Taurus, he finds out I never truly broke up with him. I called him two weeks later to apologize and tell him the truth and he still wants to be with me and work things out. Then two months later out of the blue he says he cannot do it anymore and he needs time to heal before he can love again. I've been trying everything I can to get him to talk to me. I walked to his house for an hour, I've been calling and texting like crazy, but no response. I know that he truly loves and cares about me because he wanted to marry me and have his whole life revolved around me. And he's stood by me through the craziest of times. I just don't know how he could turn his back like that in an instant. How do I get him to respond to me because I reply want this more than anything and he is the one. He has never treated me to coldly. Part of me thinks that it is payback to teach me a lesson from all the bull ive put him through but I'm not sure. He isn't one to waste time either.

He hasn't told anyone we have broken up when the first time we did he told people immediately. I don't know if he's doing this to teach me a lesson to show me how bad it felt to be treated that way or if he needs to see how committed I am to this and that I truly want it.
