Confused about my ex :/

Okay so he broke up with me almost 2 years ago and right after we broke up he told me things like "I love you" and "I miss you" but I just brushed him off cause it didn't make sense to me that he just now telling me this RIGHT after he left me so it just pissed me off and I ignored him.A couple of months after we broke up he moved away and ever since then we ignore each other for months on and off.Like our convos sometimes are short because of him then every once in a while he'll give in and actually talk to me and have a decent convo(he has always been quiet around me even when we we're dating.)Now this is what throws me off about him.A couple weeks ago he contacted me after not talking to me for a couple of months so I asked him "so what made you talk to me?" and he replied back "I miss you :/" and he asked for a picture and he sent a smiley face back and the last time we talked he said it again and called me beautiful but this time I told him I missed him too and now he wont respond to anything I send him.I'm confused!.Is he trying to get me to chase him?
