pound the phone now and then and say "hello? are you there? Hello? there you are...... darned phone"
Be creative.
You know when they say the call may be recorded for quality assurance, record your call and post it to youtube for humor assurances.
You have to do this with a straight face and not crack up in the middle of the phone call. Or else they may cut it short.
Make a competition out of it and see how long you can keep the telemarketer on the line.
I bet you could bag some hilarious conversations ever heard.
I am thinking about talkin' to the telemarketer about astrology. You know, find out what they
think about Scorpio men and all. And if they don't know, then, I'll give them a brief lesson.
What you're doin' is taking over the phone call on their time. Hey, if you ain't got nothin' to
do, you might as well have a good time doin' nothing.

I told this one guy he had a good radio voice and how attractive it sounded. Then I wondered if he could call me when my husband wasn't around and then I screamed "he's coming!" Then I hung up.
You should try to see how long you can keep them goin'.
Who knows, could become a new artform.
With the house phone- I've programmed the known telemarketers numbers as "telemarketer" or "do not answer" so when the phone rings, it shows that and announces this when it rings.
Other than that, I usually don't answer numbers that come up all funky. Legit calls usually have legit caller ID.
Before I thought to ID the known numbers in the phone, I'd just pick up and hang up whenever they called. Make them think it was a bad number.
As for my cell, I just don't answer numbers I don't have in my phone or don't really have a caller ID. I figure if it's important and a legitimate call, they'll leave a message. And unless I'm not expecting a random call from someone important, I just let them go to voicemail.

1) Just talk nonsense to them. Shoot the breeze.
2) Just set the phone down for 10 minutes.
3) Tell them the last guy who called wouldn't take your money.
4) Ask them questions about their private lives.
5) Ask them if they are lonely.
Oh... and every time, tell them that you are glad that they called.
