It's never normal. That's what trapped people say to cope. Haven't found their strength yet.

In a general context, yes. Her ex in-laws were the ones who said that, specifically her pastor ex-father in law, so I would say it was more of a dark ages concept, where women are seen only as commodities, work horses and babymaking machines. Fortunately she knew better.
