why do some straight women refer to their boyfriend as a friend / my friend

The people at my job, 10+ years older than me. Laughed at my 57 year old boss behind her back for saying her "boyfriend." They said it sounded childish. I don't get it.

I get called that by my aqua gal pal 🤷🏾‍♂️ She is more gay on spectrum and we are open.
