For the past couple weeks, we've been dog-sitting an Akita. At first, I was a little leary of bringing this killer of a beast into our home. From what I've heard people say, these dogs have an instinct much like a Pitt.
He's actually a sweetheart .. just a big, fuzzy baby. Has anybody else had experience with this breed dog before? I can't recall even hearing the name before we met our house guest. From what I found during a brief search, they were originally bred to fight bears.
Good family dogs, extremely protective of the owners, but not aggressive towards the family. Very nice, but they do not shed, they explode! Keep a solid vacuum around and a cool spot to keep their bed.
Thanks, VG .. he really surprised me. I knew he was going to be aggressive, I just hadn't realized that this wasn't going to be towards us .. his shackles go up with another animal gets near our property.
I have noticed that he likes to lay on tiled floors and won't take to a blanket or dog pillow, and right now, this time of year .. he adores the outside and can stay for hours in the cold.
Usually, I go for different kinds of dogs, but, I may just have to get an Akita for myself .. or, talk the owners out of the baby I'm sitting now.lol
If you do not want a very alrge dog, and want the smaller breed the Akita was bred from hundreds of years back, go with a Shiba Inu.
Love that breed, and even at 30 lbs., they will hurt an Akita. But ferociously loyal and good family dogs. Known for giving their lives for their owners.
Thanks, VG .. I actually like smaller breeds dogs, yet, I love how loyal this baby is that I'm sitting. He follows me around, faithfully. One thing I've noticed though, he has bad skin, or something. Scratches all the time .. no fleas, it's just raw places that must be irritating him. Is this normal for this breed, do you think?
These are wonderful dogs! Loyal to the owner. I agree with Virguy62 about shedding. They really explode!!! Twice a year. When you think one shedding season has stopped, the 2nd season begins.
Do Shiba Inu's shed? I like dogs that don't shed. Recently, I saw a Mutt breed which is really sweet and does not shed. However, I am interested in hearing about Shiba Inu?
