So, at the beginning of the summer I was doing really well. Eating healthy and exercising. Now, I have seriously fallen off the wagon and have gained 7 lbs in a little over a month! Not good. I am 5'9 and I weigh 157. I want to get down to 143 by Labor Day weekend. That gives me about a month to lose about 10 lbs...not too unreasonable. But I need some motivation to stop eating burritos and double stuffed oreos and get back on track with my regimen! Lol.

Instead of burritos, make lots of salads and just use olive oil for everything, dump all kinds of "white" bread, stick only to WHOLESOME one. Using more Salmon/tuna/and similar fish instead of burgers and such would also be a good idea. Walk a lot/ a little more than half an hour a day isnt bad to begin with. You need more of the right kinds of fats (not weeding out fats completely, just the wrong ones)

This is my problem lately. About a month ago I craved healthy foods and I was so focused on losing weight and getting in shape I did not want to eat anything to compromise that. Also, I WANTED to work out. it was not even an option to NOT work out. Now for some reason, I feel so lazy and I CRAVE fatty foods that i know are the anti-christ to losing weight.

You've contacted the RIGHT board for this...

Talk to me..whats your goal atm?
Purely just weight loss?
You working tone and definition?
Trying to bulk up?
Seeking pure muscle mass?

Generally speaking if you're focusing on weight loss, 3lbs a week is about the most you want to keep it healthy.

Also, GENERALLY SPEAKING, without knowing your exact goal and situation. The honest truth about WHATEVER your goal is.... its 60% diet, 40% excercise.

Give me your diet on a daily basis, then weekly. BE HONEST

My goal is to lose weight and tone up. I do NOT want to bulk up just tone up. My problem areas, or areas that I dislike the most, is my stomach, and arms!!

"Give me your diet on a daily basis, then weekly. BE HONEST"

Honestly, this last month (off and on) I have not been eating well. I will eat well for a few days then fall of the wagon the next day. An example of a bad day includes half a bagel and some type of sausage/bacon (a few pieces) for breakfast, chicken fish or pasta for lunch and a burrito or two chicken tacos for dinner. I have recently gotten addicted to this Greek restaurant. I go there for dinner. Typically, I will get the baked chicken with spinach and feta cheese on top with a small greek salad and two pieces of pita bread with humus. Every now and then when I am really being bad iwill eat about 5-6 double stuffed oreos w/milk or a bowl of Rocky Road ice cream. I will be the first to admiot that I know this is not the way to eat if iwant to lose weight. Like i said, about a month before this I had been eating really well for months. I do not know what has gotten into me!

You really need to put your —mind?? (if you have one and I am sure you don't ).on it and get into systematic discipline programme.

Fail to do that you??ll be the slave to your habit and comercial TV for a life time..

Qbone didn't your mother teach you that if you do not have anything nice to say...dont say anything at all. Now, go on back to another thread where someone will feed into your negativity. Run along now....

"What you need to do first is do an strict regime for a while of only healthy foods, moderation and fitness (to lose those pounds)

Once you've gotten to that ideal weight, you DONT have to keep the same strict regime.."

Yes, I have realized this about myself. I have to obey a strict regimin in order to lose the weight. Some people can simply work out or only midly alter their diets. I have tried this and it does not work. In order for me to shed the pounds i have to really cut ALL crap out...at least while i am trying to lose the weight. thanks Shaks! 🙂

Shaks, I completely agree with the life style change. i guess it boils down to me figuring out what changed within me. What made me go from being disciplined and focused to a glutton. Lol. I am a little stressed about finances and have been severly exahausted from working and going to grad school (both full time). I am sure those are not the only reasons. I think that at times I view food as my comfort, which is WRONG. So, I suppose my main problem is the way that I view food and my realtionship with food.

Listen, qbone. I am not going to go back and forth with you and play the name calling game. Not my thing. Yes, i have have said that you have displayed negativity and hatred through comments that you have made on previous posts. If you want to interpet my perception as being mean or anything else along those lines, that is your choice. it is my perception. I do not feel that there is any need to be rude and call people names. Hey if you do, that is your business. I just do not agree with it. i have said that before and i will say it again.

As i have also said to you in the past...if you do not care for me and think that I am such a terrible person who creates ridiculous threads, simply ignore me. Do not go on my thread and do not read my comments. It seems like a really simple way to solve that problem to me.

Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

Natural,

I'm going to be ABSOLUTELY real with you here because when I try to help someone with their diet and exercise program, going with a —soft hand?? doesn't ever work. Also, take anything I say here with a huge grain of salt as how a woman??s body works when it comes to body shaping is drastically different than a man??s. Testosterone vs. Estrogen. I'm going to be real with you. Now you need to be real with yourself.

The bottom line is that both Q-bone and Shaks, while expressed in different attitudes 😛, are correct. If we??re looking at weight loss for the LONG TERM, (we??re talking fit for life, not just dropping 10 lbs for the holidays and gaining it back), it is a mental thing or as I like to call it, a mental —switch?? that you need to turn on rather than off. It's a change in life style that you need to be able to make and stay disciplined to.

Current Habits:
Do you eat out a lot? Your description is very atypical of someone who favors dining out versus preparing something at home. The harsh reality is that the portion size you??re getting eating out is going to be larger than what you need to be eating. Calories In > Calories Out = Weight Gain. People will dance around that statement but THAT is the bottom line with no bullshit. Also in food preparation, whatever sauces or the manner in which they cook in may not be the healthiest. Do you life in the US or elsewhere (This matters)

Do you cook? Tell me how you eat at home. How do you prepare your food and how big are the portions?

6 Double Stuffed Oreos + Decent sized bowl of Rocky Road Ice Cream ??_
Sounds good ??_ but deep down, you know that's a lot of sugary and empty caloric content. How regular we talking here?

Lastly, tell me about your alcohol consumption.

Lol @ manipulative. I am not trying to manipulate you. In fact, I am telling you to ignore me. Act as though I am NOT here. Why waste your energy on a person you have so much disdain for? I dont get it. But you win. I surrender. I am going to take some of my own advice. Since you will not do the mature thing and ignore me if you have a problem with me. I will just ignore you. Okay. Now you will not have to use your energy to type these responses. Problem solved. Take care and best of luck. 🙂

Oh no worries! You're not the only person on DXP I've helped work on their diet with. I've literally broken down someone's (will remain nameless) caloric content, MEAL FOR MEAL, just so I could slap them in the face about how many empty calories they were taking in.

Also, I'm VERY much the single bachelor; working, attending classes, pursuing my other goals for career, etc. So you're not very different from me.

Something funny to throw in here...
Remember in grade school, when people would pick teams to play whatever game for the lunch break, and there was ALWAYS that fat ass chubby kid that always got picked last? THAT WAS ME AS A KID 😛. And lets say its quite a different story now lol.

wow, thats inspiring to know how you overcame that from your childhood..

I guess in that scenario I would have been the kid picking the people to play with lol, I was quite good in sports and could eat whatever the hell I wanted and stay skinny. One thing I do remember is that even me being only a kid, I made a conscious effort to also pick the kids that never got picked (cause they werent "good enough" or fat or whatever) must be all that Virgo compassion 😛 lol

Hahah well keep in mind A LOT of little boys...
Grow OUT first (side to side / width wise)
THEN grow up later (in relation to height)
Myself included

That husky little kid usually ends up getting to be a linebacker of some sort 😛

all great suggestions! beergo already mentioned this but i find it most important: drink lots of water!

1. cut out all caffeine
2. make sure your protein intake is sufficient
3. supplements (multivitamin, calcium with vitamin D, fish oil)
4. cut out processed foods and sugars
5. limit red meat to no more than once a week

Youre wrong about drinking lots of water..

Drinking more than a liter and half can cause serious health problems in relation to the an imbalance of electrolytes.

yeah.....if you force large amounts of water into your system over a short period of time.

Wow! You have NO IDEA how much I'm grinning right now that this topic has garnered so much interest 🙂

Okay back on point. Literally you've gotten some REALLY down to earth comments from others here which is amazingly good so I'm going to build upon that. I'm a firm believer that people as a whole...are a bunch of pussies. We can PUSH ourselves and our bodies much harder than we do and a lot of times I don't buy into some of the bullshit of why someone says they "CAN'T" do something. Conversely, I do understand that whatever path to a body goal someone pursues, it has to be something realistic, tangible, and enjoyable in some sense else they'll stop doing it. I'm going to first touch on attitude and realistic approaches before delving into some of the food specifics others have mentioned.

General Caloric intake per day: 2000 calories
This is a GENERAL number. I fully know that someone's average daily caloric intake is modified by age, metabilism, etc. The number is a point a reference, not a die hard number.

Portions, Portions, Portions:
For us Americans, our portions are completely CRAZY-INSANE.

Scenario #1: Busy as hell work week. Today's even busier. No time to hit the grocery store this week let alone think about preparing a meal. Its lunch time. Only have time to hit a drive through. Order whatever convenient combo there is. They offer to Super size it to that gigantic fries and 42 oz soda for like... a penny. While economically you got a huge fast food meal for cheap and it saved time, that probably hit about 1200-1600 calories for ONE MEAL with a ton of empty calories. Remember, the reference number I'm working with just in my little speech here is 2000 calories. You're GOING to go over the 2000 by days end unless you DON'T eat and starving yourself isn't an option in my book (This causes more weight gain than a lot of people are aware of)

Scenario #2: Work day is over! Head home. Lets say your fridge was like mine back my early 20's. There's nothing but Tabasco and Beer in it. Guess we have to go out. OH sweet! I like this new Greek place. Lets order this baked chicken dish. Wow it comes with a lot of food. A lot of chicken! Baked. So that means I'm eating healthy right? Comes with a salad. I'm eating healthy right? The sad truth is...probably not. Portion size when you go out is substantially larger dining out and you just drowned that "healthy" salad with Ranch or some other tasty dressing which skyrocketed the caloric content of the salad alone. We'll be nice and say you hit 1500 calories with this one meal. Again, you're 500 calories from blowing quota for the day.

Reality:
Now my goal was not to PROVE that you're a fat slob. What I'm trying to show is that we all have shit we need to do during the day and the above examples aren't far from what living a normal life style would entail. We're not taught about the "numbers" yet the numbers are what I want to slap you in the face with because they're tangible.

What I can do about it?
I'm going to approach minor adjustments you can make that actually go a long way in changing your habits.

General science: its accepted that your body doesn't realize its full or feel satisfied until well after you've stopped eating. 20 minutes I think is the number research is stating now.

You may also be brought up, as I did, at a young age that "YOU ALWAYS FINISH YOUR PLATE". Well I'm actually going to say..THAT'S BAD. Many of us at a young age were lead to believe we HAVE to finish our plate irregardless of if we're full or not and that lasts the entirety of many people's lives.

1. Smaller portions - obviously I've been leading up to this but how? Lets say you're ABSOLUTELY faced with Scenario #1 on a given day. Don't order the big ass meal. Order the small one. Instead of Soda, get an Iced tea (the non sugar kind). If you can get something else besides fries, do so. Big tip: NO MAYO. Mayo has an AMAZING amount of empty calories.

NOW here's the thing I want you to get used to...
If faced with Scenario #1, but on top of that of what I just suggested, when you're at wherever you're going to eat.. I want you to cut it in HALF and just eat that. You can order whatever you want! but only half of it. Even if you couldn't substitute something for the fries, JUST EAT HALF.

Strangely enough, if you start getting used to it, you'll find that after 20 mins you'll walk away saying "I'm good! I feel satisfied". Now before you say "WTF VH!??! HALF".... yes half..because half of a meal in America is most likely a FULL mean in another country. So you really aren't STARVING yourself. You're breaking a bad habit.

2. More meals than three - Okay this one requires a little more thought and discipline on your part. And honestly, this part isn't going to work if you're going to cheat. Like I said earlier, "I'm going to be real with you. Now you need to be real with yourself."

- Breakfast - Yes, the most important meal of the day. Yes, you've heard it 23948723948 times. Yes, I'll say it again. Eat your breakfast, damn it! Now mind you...I LOVE MY SLEEP. I LOVE SLEEPING IN. I LOVE LAZY MORNINGS (especially lazy mornings with someone soft and warm next to me!). So I hear you that its hard to get motivated to eat first thing in the morning. In fact I normally DON'T eat immediately after waking up. But what I try to do, and I think its realistic, is try to have something fairly small within the first hour - hour and a half of the day.

- More meals than three - So I've told you to eat smaller portions and if you have to eat out, cut it in half. Won't I get hungry sooner? Probably but that's actually a good thing if you can remain real to yourself. You ate half of that sandwich for lunch, its now 3 ours later and you're hungry again versus you normally eat dinner at 6-7. That's OKAY. Eat the 2nd half now. Your goal here is NOT to increase your food intake but increase your metabolism. This DOES NOT WORK if you're going to cheat yourself for each of these mini meals and have a little "extra".

I'm going to use ME as an example: I'm actually in a weight loss phase right now. Have been for about a month. I'm averaging about 5-6 mini meals a day.
Here's a list of what I had a few weeks ago.
1 - (breakfast) - Small bowl of soup
2. - 3 hours later - An big apple
3. A few hours oater - Left for lunch and got a sandwich - ate half of it
4. A few hours later - still at work - ate the other half of the sandwich
5. 4 hours later - off work - decided to cook at home - I made Brown Rice a small seasoned steak, steamed zucchink (Total caloric content for the meal was like 600?)
6. I felt like nibbling on something a few hours later so had some string cheese

I think total calories that day was 1800ish? Not bad!

Final Commentary on the 'Portions, Portions, Portions' section

Met up for drinks with a childhood buddy of mine who's a doctor. I'm looking at him and he's lost a good 20-30 lbs so I bring it up. All he did was substantially reduce the size of his meals and started having 5-6 meals a day. He didn't exercise ONE FREAKING DAY the entire time (Lucky bastard!). He was surprised how successful it was so he started advising some of his overweight patients with that. "I don't care what you have, just cut it in HALF". Some of his patients came back saying they sincerely tried it and found it working.

Anyways, my goal with this section was to thump you over the head that some of what may have caused the weight gain may have been just how you normally go through the day without even knowing how many calories you were putting into yourself ALONG with just being real with yourself that also part of the extra weight did come from your own actions (Which I'm glad you have no denial about!) then bring to the table some realistic ways to "change" your habits rather than say focus on gimmick diets.

Every BODY is different and EVERYBODY is different. Its just a matter of breaking some bad habits (Life style choices, as Shaka mentioned) and making a "switch" in your mind (Mental discipline, as Q-Bone mentioned).

oooo, nice thread!

I think I'm just curvy and theres nothing I can do to change that. However, I've been cutting back on my regular foods and working out at least 3 times a week.

I will admit, I do like ice cream 😛 but I know that if I eat it then I have to work out longer the next day.

I don't have any hips really -- I joke around that I have hips but they seem to be aligned with my shoulders so hmmm I don't :/ , but I have the round rear and thighs. My lower belly is a constant struggle.

So the fact that my hips didn't quite fit in to my body structure was like hmmmmm :/

But I'm sure you look fine with your hips, at least you don't have to worry about jeans, they make jeans to fit you. I have trouble with jeans at times ...

I agree with 2, 3, and 4, but keep the sugars to natural sugars. It shouldn't matter how much apples or oranges you eat. Limit red meat, I don't know too much on that though. Whats wrong with eating red meat?

But. I completely disagree with 1. Caffeine and energy drinks increases metabolism and thus increases your bodies metabolic rate of breaking down fats and using sugars. But don't drink too much or more then you currently are, but use caffeine to your advantage to a certain extent. Teas and coffees.

many people believe their daily caffeinated drink helps them to lose weight or keep weight off. the diuretic effect of caffeine is loss of water, not fat. caffeine intake aggravates stress, leading to increased levels of the glucocorticoids including cortisol. increased cortisol levels lead to abdominal obesity. caffeine also stimulates appetite.

fruit contains a lot sugar. even though it's natural sugar, it can still cause weight gain if you eat too much and do not burn it off. it can prevent you from losing weight if you eat too much of it. fruit is a carbohydrate and anytime you consume excess amounts of this food group, your body will turn it into fat.

red meat is high in saturated fat and cholesterol.

No, I have trouble with jeans too 😢 I'm only 5'1 so if I can't find petite jeans they are way to long, and I have a hard time because when they fit good in the hips, the waist is to loose.not that I have a flat stomach or anything, because I sure don't.

Really? Sometimes, I can buy jeans two sizes too big and the pockets still don't go pass my upper thighs ahahahaha. See, if I find jeans that fit good in the waist, then they are lose everywhere else. *shakes head*
