It can be any one of those things, or all of those things. Although I'm not to fond of rants, unless there is a specific purpose for it. For me the most amazing works of literature are the ones that entertain and inspire. I?ll never forget when I first read the Brothers Karamazov. It?s supposed to be one of the great hallmarks of writing. Dostoevsky is considered to be a literary giant. But when I started reading it I realized the guy was a good story teller. On top of that it was a thought provoking novel, but at it?s heart it was a good story.
I think it depends on what kind of project it is. If it?s an important issue, then be illuminating. If it?s humorous then be entertaining. People need both in their lives. What is it that you?re working on? (or is it a secret?)
I'm taking a creative writing class, our assignments have varied from character to setting to monologue's & this weeks - dialogue. The class has really liked my work so far & I am learning a lot of respect for other people's perspective's as well.
Either way, as a writer a person must always learn & grow even in their own style .
Inspire? Interesting.
Not many do, but I certainly think that's true of the best. I like that idea.
Inspire definately. I am working on my last independant piece for my class. I've choosen a collection of peoms. I might post it. Either way, I've learnt that inspiration is definately is a writers job. To think about something, feel , believe, excite, depress, anything has to do with inspire...it inspires emotion.
as for writing, there are three musts.
1. you must read diverse material daily
2. you must have a limitless curiousity about life, culture and the world.
3. you must have a muse, inner drive, and a touch of torment always helos
