my point is depending on where you live, your taxes are paying for something - the roads you use, the health service or the fire department or keeping the streets clean or the police that protects you.

this is stuff you are paying for. you are not working for free, you are working to pay for those things that make your life easier.

The guy below you is right. I think you fail to realize how much in tax everyone pays.

If that were the case the streets would be made with gold & police would have million dollar salaries

i think that's the exactly the difference between a us mentality (i'm guessing here, forgive me if i'm wrong) and a european or (even canadian) mentality.

the us is everyone is in it for themselves.

the others are about creating a society where everyone has a relatively equal standard of living - access to education, medicines, services. this takes taxation. europe has some of the highest taxes in the world but also the highest living standards. i don't care that i have to pay tax if it means i can go to hospital for free.

if you are in the us, it's because your govt spends a lot of its tax on its military.

you guys aren't taxed as much as everyone else. it's just because your services are so shite that it feels unfair.

absolutely! but that is not the fault of tax as a concept but rather the people that are elected and the values they stand for.

shit man, i would give my entire wage if it meant that i didn't have to pay for anything until the day i died.

Taxes help society at large which does eventually come back to you. I don’t mind paying. It sucks but I view it as helping society at large.

Now I have lots of opinions about how those dollars get spent by the government because I think it should focus on the social benefit of the people rather than war and lining rich peoples pockets for special interest groups.

It's too much money for what everyone gets in return as a whole. If you keep down this path you'll eventually be a slave.

It took these idiots up here from when I moved here at 16 to now 36 years old to add one extra lane on the freeway in both directions maybe 3 miles. That's 20 years, tell me what the fuck is wrong with this picture.

Are you in the northeast? There have been some massive boondoggles there. There's waste and corruption in any system, and more in ours in some places than others. The public has to continually keep an eye on that. It's still cheaper and more feasible than trying to build your own roads. If you let corporations take over, every road would be one mass ad, and everything would be geared toward maximum profit for whatever corporation paid for something, not safety, not preservation of the land, not purity of the air or water or food supply. Is that what people would prefer?

Businesses, most corporate, some small or medium, some HBUs. That depends on the laws in the state and city. The more strict those laws, the fewer corporations are generally involved. That requires city, county, state, and federal employees to manage and oversee the contracts. We also have agencies at all levels that oversee corporations to check that they follow the law on everything from how money is spent to safety. These are called "regulations" and are considered a dirty word by many Republicans because they quite intentionally prevent corporations from doing whatever they want.

I've read/seen/heard people complaining how unconstitutional the concept of taxes is, with some going as far as suggesting it is a part of communist ideologies (which is a whole other subject unto itself) .....

With the above in mind, putting mismanagement of funds/ funneling of exorbitant sums into questionable branches (i.e. military) aside, how or what do you propose in its stead? I am genuinely curious?

Weelll....if I were entirely candid, I wouldn't mind keeping my entire salary earthier (😛) but that begs the question.... what is the alternative if we wish to keep all those elements that are funded by taxes!?

Nah.

I figured as much. All the countries I can think of that were able to get away without taxes are either supported by money generated through tourism or oil. 🤷🏻‍♀️

My tax rate is basically 1/3 of my income.......

1/10 sounds like a better distribution

Basically I'm working for free 4 months out of the year

Mine is the same with claiming two dependents.

I claim as many deductions on my W-4 to decrease tax taken out. Then, I take the amount they would have wanted in taxes... and put it in my 401K/Roth to reduce my adjusted gross.

Ya Canada is socialism.

I paid way more tax in Canada than I do in Australia.

i had a rough idea based on their version of medicare (? not sure what it is called there) but since i've never been to canada i couldnt be sure about their attitudes to socialism.

Google the tax rates of other 1st world countries.

Then look around you. That's where the money goes. Quite a few states in general pay more then they receive back from the fed. That's a topic for another discussion though.

My tax rate is basically 1/3 of my income.......

1/10 sounds like a better distribution

Basically I'm working for free 4 months out of the year

Stop whinging and do something about it.

It's not a one man job buddy

What do you mean?

Learning how to deduct is.

Stop blaming everyone else cos you don't know how to work the system..

No, what i am suggesting is:

claim a portion of your rent

claim a portion, it not all of your mobile phone and data use

There's other things.

Get my drift?

I play the tax game hard. I split my income into 3 different avenues so that I’m only paying taxes on around 50-60% through adp. 20-30% on 1099 where I have enough write offs to break even/not pay any taxes on that money. The other 20-30% is essentially under the table aka cash.

Do you have a tax guy/gal? Sit down and have them take a look at your return. Turbo tax is easy and quick but you might be missing out on some write offs or loopholes.
