Sex work decriminalization

NY legislature just last night introduced a bill to decriminalize sex work in the state, which, if it passes, will be the first law of its kind that has been proposed in the US.

What are your thoughts? Are you for or against sex work being represented as legal income? Why or why not?

I personally don’t see the reason to criminalize something that is presently legal in more than half the world effectively, and something that has had a rich history in society since its early dawn. It had religious importance even, in some parts of the ancient world.

King of off-topic, Ram, have you ever watched the TV series Firefly? It's only one season because it got cancelled. There are "companions" on that show who are highly trained and respected prostitutes.

The bill is aimed at protection of sex workers from trafficking.

And yes, I loved Inara’s character! And all the scenes with her.

I think it's a means but never really the end of it.

For example, here where sex work was made legal over 30 years ago, it was done with the aim of "shaming" sex workers into going on the streets in public zones, and gradually hoping they'd be discouraged from the life altogether.

It didn't turn out that way. Sex work lived on. So the public state just settled on taxing sex workers without giving back provision or protection that other tax paying citizens would normally get.

Either way, you're guaranteed someone gets screwed.

There are some countries that come across like they're the exception and kind of utopic. Like Holland and Germany. But I've haven't been to Holland since I was 11 and never been to Germany, so I don't know what the real deal is.

“Here” is where, friend? Are you still in Italy or back in England? And yes, I’d love to hear input from dxp members who live in Germany and Holland.

Needs to be legal. It’s legal to have sex and it’s legal to film sex and put it out there for people to see and profit off of. Makes 0 sense to criminalize it because workers are making money for themselves. It’s all a dumb control thing. I think it would make for safer and healthier environments for sex workers as well.

The government wants their tax shekels. That's why they don't just legalize it entirely. How would one tax it?

Morena Baccarin is a goddess, case closed.

And I don't see a problem with it. There are far more physically risky professions out there. As long as 100% safe sex is practiced, I don't see why it's illegal.

Besides, it's one of the professions that will live on even during post-apocalyptic times. Just like engineers, doctors, cooks, farmers etc. It's one of our basic needs.
