I'm having a bad day so perfect for this vent I've been meaning to express.

So you know how you walk around or drive around big cities and all you see decorating buildings and spaces are ads. Ads for cars, shoes, slogans, tv shows, clothing etc. And after being around that you feel a bit depleted...like fuck...info overload + shit i'm not even interested in. I need some quiet and peace so let's go to the suburbs or a vacation filled wiht nature etc. Point is these billboards are draining af.

Now.... thanks to witless folks, we walk around seeing personal ads on people's skin.... ads of who they are...just screaming NOTICE ME, LOOK WHAT I'm ABOUT! Tattoos of cartoons, slogans & quotes, symbols, "art", pictures of family, etc. After seeing enough of people with tattoos you feel a bit depleted... like fuck... info overload + shit I'm not even interested in. I don't know you and it would be really nice if I didnt see picture of your pet on your arm that probably passed away. I don't even know your name but now I know that you believe in this religious quote.

So all of you insensitive fucks who keep subjecting people to your inner world...fuck off.

This is the dumbest trend I've seen... just people everywhere with fucking ads on their skin. I went to the bank the other day and what I can only assume to be sisters or bffs, had matching sleeves... *puke* *cringe* *shivers*

I'm getting angrier as I type all of this out lol but it's so ridiculous.... *sigh*... I wonder if one day in the next 30-50 years folks will look back and be like, "people are dumb aren't they. These folks literally PAID money and tolerated PAIN to have permanent shit on their skin." LMAO.

Sorry tattoo lovers...I find the practice idiotic, useless, and not even interesting. Its just part of our "attention-seeking" society that we're building. Less time actually getting to know people but random info thrown at you.

Have I ever wanted to get a tattoo?? Suuuure, but then again I've also wanted to do many other dumb things and something called common sense kicks in and is like... that's not a good idea. Let's just do something you know... *not* so permanent and painful. I don't know... like buy a new pair of shoes or a t-shirt with a fav quote as a form of individual expression. Or may be put up a poster in your room.... I don't know I'm sure there are many ways for self-expression.

Really? Wow.

Getting a tattoo is a personal experience and not about telling the world anything. It is for yourself. Your observing them brings it to you, nothing else.

Yeah.... people say it's personal but I think a private journal is more personal. If someone else can easily see it, I don't think that makes it personal at all. I suppose I understand if it's in hidden areas...

That is you telling the world/people how they should be. People have choices & opinions that may be different than yours. Just cuz you don’t understand it doesn’t make it not valid.

Mine are hidden but it is the same if they aren’t. They get to deal with the way the world views them. It is not their responsibility to make you comfortable.

Hhmm brings a good question: whose responsibility is it then to make people around them feel comfortable?

hmmmm, I get that you may not like what is happening - but the above makes sense too - it's not anyone's individual responsibility to be a certain way in order for other people to feel comfortable around them - you can't please everyone - and we have individual rights - wouldn't it be your responsibility just to be comfortable no matter what

i think its about a decent balance

you can think that but then you'll most likely find yourself right back in the same boat of intolerance when others are out of your balance boundary - the boundaries are dissipating quicker than you can say - you only have control over "you"

It's your responsibility, sis. All you have to do is mind your business.

lol that's my whole damn point. I want to mind my own business and know nothing about you. But people want to show you who they are so openly.

you can observe but you don't have to see ... there is a subtle art form here

oooo i like that 🙂

It is your responsibility to make yourself feel comfortable or face the things that make you feel uncomfortable. Growth is outside your comfort zone. So the real question is why does other people’s tattoos make you uncomfortable when they have nothing to do with you?

I have to see it and process it. I don't want to know things about these random people on the street.

Similarly, what about good hygiene? Or good etiquette in clothing choices?

I know these are foreign values in North America but in other places, people do consider how they will affect others in their outward expression?

Even something as simple as clothing choice is being considerate to those around you. I understand this is completely a weird value in North America because in North America we are taught individualism and autonomy is important than the collective.

That is about you not the collective. Your feelings or discomfort. It is the way the world is, not what it should be in theory (to you).

So we should all be one mindset. All the same. No individualism at all? No differences. No freedom?

Funny my Cap ex has a tattooed sleeve and more but the sleeve is a tribute to his family. I think it’s heartwarming actually. His mom who died and his granddaughter and his kids. Beautiful expression actually.

I have tattoos about my journey. The only reason they are covered is due to my profession.

That's my viewpoint and of course you have the right to yours. So cheers to that.

I'm sure you're not the only one - society is changing rapidly; who knows where we are headed - I suspect that a lot of us that are not drinking the koolaid have some sort of overload stressors - mine is the money thing - it's all about getting your dollar - tv advertisements; computer advertisements; marketer phone calls; getting ripped off at the car dealer for service that costs 1/3 elsewhere ... need I go on - it makes me sick and I believe it's making us all sick in a way

As someone who has many tattoos, I can only tell you why I chose to get them. In America, at least, tattoos have been a "forbidden" and "frowned upon" act. And in many ways it still is, especially within corporate America. Tattoos were for "side show" Circus acts, etc...

I can only speak for myself, but when you suggest buying a t-shirt with a slogan, it seems hypocritical. Simply because telling someone to do so, is only in the benefit of a Corporation that already hugely profits off people that care about brand labels and are materialistic. I don't condone that type of thought. Although if someone were to go out and get a "SUPREME" logo tattoo on them, I would feel the same too. I dislike materialism. I dislike brand "whores". So in that, I can agree.

However, as for tattoos. Again, I can only simply talk about myself, not the populace. Every tattoo I have was custom drawn, except the "I'm going to rebel at 18" dragon tattoo I got on my back that I could hide away, and that will be covered up with another custom tattoo soon. I didn't do this to "advertise" my inner thoughts, I did them all for myself. Not for anyone else. I could care less if someone dislikes them or not, it is the skin I live in, and the beauty I enjoy. But that goes back to what I was beginning to say at the start.

My ex-husband of 13 years, use to make really disheartening comments to me about my tattoo. "Your tattoo looks ghetto." "It makes you look uneducated." "It's a good thing you can cover it up, or people would think you didn't have class." "You can't get anymore, what would my bosses think of you when we go to a company dinner." "They look gross." This mentality, and being told this by people, is grotesque. Sure you don't have to like them, but to get to a point where you begin to degrade people that choose to like tattoos? Don't you find that a little...off?

So after my divorce, I did all the things I had wanted. So the majority of my tattoos, outside of the "rebellion one" were all obtained in the last 5 years. Because I stopped trying to appease him, and make myself happy. So I will continue to enjoy my tattoos, and continue to show pride in the portrait of my grandmother that died on Valentine's day this year. Not to piss you off, but because, I am no longer tied down by the boundaries of someone else that dictated how I should live.

I get shit for my Scorpion tattoo..

But it is my design. I drew it and took it to my artist. It is literally MY art, on my body.

My favorite part of getting a tattoo (other than the "sub-like" space you can go into during 3-5 hour sessions), is the creative aspect of imagining what you want and working with your artist to make a piece that YOU will enjoy.

I do find getting tattoos to be therapeutic for me. I actually have another session this weekend. lol

I think that's why I have so many now. It bothered me greatly to have what I wanted to be suppressed for years, Which is why its nice to be with someone who enjoys them as much as I do.

Only Mexican drug cartel thugs should get Scorpion tattoos.

Unless that's a side hustle for you...if so, carry on.

Aw, I was gonna argue against it cause it’s kinda judgemental and over the top and a little bit (hypocritically) over expressive and dramatic.... but actually you do seem quite upset and that takes the fun out of it... we all have our flare ups and things that we get upset at because they represent some other source of hurt for us. I’m sorry you feel that way, genuinely. I hope you manage to see your way out of your anger for yourself, and get past whatever it is that’s truly bothering you✌️

Hey thanks and don't worry about it. You can voice your thoughts. All opinions are welcome.

I just have certain pet peeves with how people do things that I'm passionate about but I'm not suicidal over it lol.

I know why I don't like this trend for reasons stated in OP and many people disagree which is their right. I don't have any issues with that. Equally, my values are bit different from the North American value of "do what you want!" I'm more like hey let's just take a step back and not be overly in your face about your intimate ideas/feelings. I'm pretty sure it's a cultural difference.

Yeah I completely understand your reasoning for your tattoos... Tattoos have been taboo but are now quite mainstream. It sounds like your ex husband was very traditional.

and my OP was very skewed and judgemental in the fact that people get them to jump on the bandwagon. I think tattoos are a commitment and if people want to make that commitment to prove something to themselves it's of course their choice. And if you ask people about their tattoos each person will have an endearing story I'm sure...except few here and there that got it impulsively. I really don't have anything personal against each person who has a tattoo but then collectively seeing person after person with tattoos for me it's draining.

I know I expressed myself in an extreme fashion which is NOT a reflection of how I feel about each person but the point I was trying to make is from a collective stand point. Tattoos have become so mainstream and so prevalent that it's like no matter where you go you see these personal markings on people. People will point out right away that its a personal choice... and yes it is but because it is displayed externally it does affect others too. You see what I mean? So as much as it is something intimate that intimacy is now public space for everyone else to see.

You can make the same argument for clothing... like HEY it's my choice that I want to wear my pants to my knees with my underwear/butt sticking out... and you have people say ok cool but we as OTHER people do not want to see your butt/underwear etc. So who is right? No one really. It is not a right or wrong thing but more of direction of society. More people voice their opinion on a matter it'll go that way.

I don't want to see people's personal journeys when I don't even know their name but someone else will find it intriguing. Who is right? No one really because their just opinions. It's not an ethics issue of right and wrong.

So people will continue to get tattoos, good for them, and there will be people like me who judge against them. You know what I mean? And whoever the masses are, that's how society norms are born and continue based on mere opinions.

Correct me if I am wrong, but it sounds like you have more of a problem with tattoos that are kind of "cookie" cutter. What I mean by that is, there is no unique aspect of it. Basically, something that looks like someone picked it out of a book and said "GIMME THAT!" and then guise it as some sort of deep thought?

For instance, I love tattoos, but I judge some folks for getting things that I find ridiculous. I have a friend, that lost a bet in Vegas, and ended up getting a tramp stamp of a unicorn shitting out a rainbow. The dude is like 6'6, 350 lbs of muscle, and is a redneck. There is no value in that tattoo, nor is there any value in his "FAMOUS STAR" tattoo running down his forearm. And so, he basically becomes the walking advertisement, as you suggest. Which even I find annoying. I don't quite understand people that get tattoos that seemingly means really nothing at all. But that is me, because if you are going to live with something so permanent, at least have meaning behind it. Otherwise, it just looks vapid. But that again is me, and my opinion.

What I said was my own personal story. Not to change you opinion. Not to tell you, you are wrong. That wasn't my intention. I like debating, and I sometimes think that people fight to just be right. You are not right, and you are not wrong.

What I can say is, is that, I do enjoy that tattoos aren't as taboo as they once were. That people are less willing to write off a person with one, as being less than. That a tattoo doesn't mean you can't be financially successful, and that you aren't some heathen if you have one. So where in the aspect of you having sensory overload, I find it nice that the world is becoming more tolerant. Ya know?
