Theres an old Jewish technique for that exact thing.

Once a week find a quiet spot.. relax, close your eyes and visualize a black chalkboard.

Keep that board blank for 10 seconds.

Simple.

Over time you'll find your far more focused and far less overwhelmed with your thoughts.
I have attempted meditation but my mind just wonders

you can't meditate for long periods of time the mind was never built to stop thinking.

That's why you only need 10 seconds for this particular technique as that's as long as the mind can stay blank but becomes for more manageable after 3 months.

There's herbs for that help you relax

Lavender either the oil or in a tea

Chamomile tea

st johns wort is a mood stabilizer and good for anxiety or nervous tension when you can't calm down and stuff. It helps me.

Frankincense & myrrh oil

Orange or citrus oils to uplift the mood

over thinkers have too much time on their hands

You gotta distract yourself, play video games, read a book that needs your attention.

Yoga, running, working out

Music

Paint, draw.

Something

Smoke

Still it's something you gotta learn to handle. I can't imagine letting it get the best of me for more than 10 minutes without doing something about it.

Smoke weed and go for a walk
Or go for a nature walk even without the weed. It's very relaxing. You could take pics of the things you see for a photo journal. Being one with nature helps me center myself.

Funnily enough I did that this afternoon with my daughter's. Even though it was freezing I thought the fresh air would do us good and we really enjoyed it.

Just feel like venting. I'm an over thinker. I think about anything and everything. I think about people and how they are feeling. I constantly think about the future instead of just focusing on the present. I wish I could find away to stop myself from overthinking all the time.
DO more ...

..... Sex that's a great distraction but I'm not getting any of that at the moment ?

Reaching a moment in which your mind stops wondering during neditation takes years of practicing meditation on a daily basis. 🙂

I watched eat pray love the other night. I felt really good after watching it. I could relate to it in a way. I've got the headspace app so I'm doing 10 minutes a day at the moment.

I havent watched it! Good for you! With time you'll get better and you will be able to meditate for longer periods and reach deeper into your self. I am also at the beginning of this path.

I'm an extreme overthinker to detrimental levels. I will overthink myself out of happiness. I will picture a situation I'm about to face and a million potential scenarios that could happen. Most are negative. Recently something hit me and I realized I need to just stop thinking and overpsyching myself and just deal with it when time comes. Let myself flow with the moment and only face it then, not a billion times in my head beforehand. Enjoy life as it happens, appreciate spontaneity. I can confirm it'll enrich your life. So if you catch yourself overthinking about something, quickly cut yourself off and redirect your focus to anything else but that again.

Omg you just hit the nail on the head. that is exactly what i do. When something is going well, I will convince myself that it's all going to go tits up. I've also tried to stop this and realise that I need to live more in the present and not worry about bridges I've not had to cross yet. To also allow myself to feel happiness and not assume it's going to coming crashing down.

I think - you misunderstood meditation (how it works - how it's done).

There's plenty of people who don't have a busy mind... more common in the rural areas - where the living conditions are more relaxed (especially in the mountains or the people who live by the sea), thus - they have a natural predisposition for that (silencing the mind - can be a natural tendency for those people - something that works right away). Same can't be said about someone who dabbles with overthinking quite often - since you've developed a pattern - where your mind is constantly busy thinking about something, so... for you, meditation - can be a way of braking that pattern.

Meditation can actually imply thinking - as it's the case with contemplation - where you try to wrap you head around an idea (a concern, a study, etc...) - while trying to reach some conclusion. Meditations in a religious context - can imply some form of chanting (or a prayer) - which becomes the main focus of your mind, and thus... one can regain some peace of mind. Though, based on your words, i presume you're talking about one of those new age versions - the one that spread all over the internet at one point - but it's quite erroneous in terms of practice (or at least the way it's described: take lotus position... silence the mind... ^^).

That's not how it works, you're not suppose to silence your thoughts - "you're suppose to observe them". Let your mind do its thing, let it think, let the thoughts flow as they usually do - but don't identify with your thoughts... treat them as guests - and just observe them. You can do that from a 3rd person - if that helps. You don't have to struggle with some pose (the lotus pose can be efficient - only if you master it to the point where it feels comfortable, that if you have a flexible body - cause it's even contraindicated if your legs are not healthy enough). You can sit on a chair or you can even lay on your bed, just... pick the most comfortable position you know and... sit with your self. If mindfulness is your goal - it can help if you sit in a silent room (with no distractions whatsoever: no media device and such...). If you want to achieve peace of mind - you can even practice that outside, preferably somewhere in nature or by the sea (if you live near by). And eventually - you might find the sound of nature (birds chirping, the sound of the wind or waves and so on...) - more interesting than your thoughts. ^^

Thanks for your advice. Yes I do currently have an app on my phone called headspace. I do it lying down in bed, before I go to sleep, infact last night I must have nodded off during it!!

I also work on that technique of not blocking my thoughts our emotions but trying to allow them to flow but not give them too much attention.
