OK, I have 5 planets in the 12th house (Moon, Sun, Saturn, Pluto, Venus) (12th house Libra/ Scorpio Rising) and I can testify to the fact that it doesn't suck, also to the fact that freedom exists in the vast majority of cases and that ultimately there is nothing to be afraid of/ almost anything can be overcome.
Also, for God's sake, how many people are actually in hospitals, prisons and whatever kind of other really scary institutions? The likelihood of having a 12th house Sun is 100/12 = 8.33% (feel free to argue factors that make it less likely for women to give birth between 6 and 8am, than between other hours). Do the percentages of people imprisoned and suffering from chronic illness requiring hospitalization add to 8? (just a question).
I have spent a lot of my life in universities...actually by choice (I have a reflective side and an iq of 140/ so 2 master's degrees and working on a PhD). Strangely, I did get depressed and bored doing only research and teaching, so I left (i.e. came back to the fabulous world of the market/ capitalist exploitation and the like). No one stopped me. Also no one stopped me when wanting to quit jobs and take a break. Neither is there a cosmic punishment waiting for me around the corner (it seems). Like all other mortals I am faced with the consequences of my actions (you know, job hopper or whatever), but those consequences are not that disabling really. Also if I do want to throw myself off a bridge, I am free to do that too (despite having people who care about me in their own ways, I am not tied to anything). So again, evil? horrible?
If we want to discuss the fact that we live in a world that is still primitive and grounded in aggressiveness and conflict, or that there are very clear limitations to people's compassion not to mention perceptiveness and sensitivity (including intelligence) - sure, true. i think the 12th house = prisons and institutions meant you spent a lot of your time alone and solitary (like in jails and in hospitals), if you are doing similar in a college setting that can still hit the 12th house theme, even though technically colleges/universities are a 9th house thing
