I've always prefer the original version, so thanks for posting it. I can appreciate other versions though.
I've often thought it would make a lot of sense if this is purgatory, or something like it. No way for me to know for sure, I guess.

Think about it, Purgatory is a space between heaven and hell its a trap, so If hell is beneath us and heaven above us this is purgatory.
