Mean mistreater?

Hi! I'm new to this forum and am stuck on some recent events that I can't wrap my brain around. Maybe a lion can help?
I met a charming leo months back. We hooked up and it was amazing! I've never shared an instant connection the same way. He lived on the other end of the country and not thinking much would come of it, I was surprised that he kept initiating regular flirty/friendly contact.
He told me he had planned for many years before he met me that he would move to the town I lived in and was keeping me up on his plans! (Yay!) Well, I hit some hard times and unexpectedly had to move a few states away for work and stay family. Showing genuine concern, he called to make sure I was ok and told me he had a 'vision' he would come and pick me up on his way moving across the country. How romantic, right?! We spent the road trip laughing, sharing life experiences, hotels, we had even more in common than I imagined and I started bringing my walls down. I was his 'dreamgirl' He knew going back I would need to rely on him for a place to stay until I got back on my feet.
By the time we got to town, I helped him unpack everything he owned and got ahold of my closest friend so that I could stay with her for a couple of days and give him space to settle in.
When it came time to go back to his place, he was MIA. I sent him one text and a call...
He didn't respond for 2 1/2 weeks. I got an apology through email that he was 'sorry, he pulled back when he got overwhelmed and he wanted to talk soon.' Fine, I could relate moving to a new town can be traumatic, but he gave me a new number and had changed his?!! Huh? what would I do if I couldn't get ahold of him? Where would I stay? I wasn't blowing up his phone or psycho dialing?
Long story short, I waited another couple of weeks to hear back and never did. He said he didn't know what to say when I told him I was hurting and scared.
He had picked me up and dropped me off to basically rot in the streets with no where to go and no way to get back to my family?
Is this typical of leo to blow this hot and cold or am I dealing with a grade A psychopath?

Thanks for the sound advice. I've erased all his contact info and blocked his number, even to prevent myself from lashing out and ever asking him 'why?'
I'm still in shock because I had no idea, red flag, warning. As an adult, I wouldn't even expect this behavior as normal and I'm trying not to beat myself over this butter. I've had my 'moments' but know this one is not my fault...or my problem since I'm now somewhere safe.
