Doctors around here are considering being a no-insurance doctor and accepting cash only. That way, they can charge a reasonable price and they are guaranteed to get paid. There are ways around the system.

Sounds like the old days when they'd take a calf for payment for delivering a baby at home.

This doesn't solve the issue of the cost of labs, x-rays, surgical supplies or medications, but at least its a start.

Newsflash, something you all don't seem to be aware of- half that shit does NOT cost as much as they bill you for. If you seriously think a lab truly costs 1200, you're naive as eff.

One, medical over inflates a lot of things BECAUSE of insurance. Insurance companies ALREADY don't pay out like they should. The bill is negotiated between hospital/medical and the insurance company. Knowing this, the hospitals raise the costs of healthcare above and beyond what it should be just to recoup the loss they know they'll be getting from insurance. This is also why hospitals are willing to negotiate a "cash" option to patients with no insurance.

Also, Medicaid/Medicare vs insurance? The former wins when it comes to getting paid. It's why you'll hear a lot about scams involved with government based programs like that because as long as all the appropriate paperwork and proper terminology is used, they'll pay for it. "As needed" is a broad term and it takes this slight word usage and this paperwork to get it covered.

Insurance pays based on "do we want to cover this?"

People should not be forced to purchase a product or be penalized. That's all the ACA is. Buy insurance or pay a fine. Funny, thought we were a Constitutional Republic.

One of my jobs cut my hours because of ACA.

At my other job on Tuesday (a healthcare facility) I was listening to a patient flipping out on the woman at the front desk because she now has a $ 100 copay.

To those wishing for a single payor system.. You need to seriously rethink that.

It needs to be repealed. Period.

Not saying I like the way things are, make no mistake. I agree, we should not be penalized for buying a product. That's really all it is, a product.

Now we are faced with a much bigger problem, who's gonna start pickteting? our rights are still there but this generation is so unaware, (conspiracy)that its up to us baby boomers to make a stand?

I'm not a baby boomer but I am very much involved.

Problem is... Americans are so brainwashed in to thinking music awards are more important than what's going on in DC. They have no idea what our elected servants (the gov't) are doing nor how it effects them.

Pretty scary...

No kidding. Glad to see they haven't gotten to all of you.

And lol @ all the OMG BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING.

Please. They already know what you make if you file taxes. Why so paranoid about providing income when applying for insurance? Not saying it ISN'T bad, but lol if you think you're hiding something by not doing so.

And this bs with the insurance cost raising with existing plans? Blame the insurance companies for being assholes who are pissed they can't rip us off anymore (which thanks to Nixon, is why they take all your money and won't cover shit, let alone deny insurance to "pre-existing conditions.") so they turn around and hike up the cost to make up for all the "losses" they're going to take by being told to offer insurance for ANYONE.

The credit card companies and banks threw the same bullshit tizzy fit when Obama put the slap down on their ridiculous bs- handing out loans and credit cards like candy, intentionally misleading borrowers into tons o debt. Up went these fees, getting a credit card is harder now, etc. They no longer had the free reign to dick around consumers with their shit that also was free reign given to them by a previous admin (don't recall which).

Both of these money mongers are simply throwing tantrums because they can't just take our money anymore like they used to.

Not absolutely defending all of this, but there is much more going on than "lol blame Obama/Obamacare." Glad to see that you all are just as clueless as the younger generations by feeding into the propaganda of the usual ONE scapegoat. This entire issue is multifaceted.

Sure, it's a mess and having some issues, but Jesus Christ, the intent is something that has been needed ever since Nixon left us all to die after he signed away real insurance.

I wasn't. But the lot of you saying the younger generations are out of it aren't exactly educated on the matter either. I think there's so much bs flying around nobody really knows what's going on with this stuff. I lol when people assume "Obamacare" is the actual insurance.

I think reading the actual documentation helps clear things up though. Nobody thinks to do that. Poor execution and shitty insurance companies are just making it all a mess.

I work on the reimbursement of healthcare. No, one lab won't cost 1200, but lots of different tests can add up to that amount. Medicare and medicaid pays less for some tests than it costs to run them. Hospitals pay for the equipment, the vial, the reagents, shippingcost for that reagent and vial, the electricity and the tech's salary. We have taken the cost and broke it down to what it actually cost to run a test. Payment was less.

Good point. In fact the media already is setting up the next election and the sheep are believing what they hear. What I find really scary (well sort of..because I'm not) in this thread is the smell of fear I'm getting from posters about this. That is exactly what they are trying to do..and I see it's working. smh

I'm afraid, and I should be.

I cannot lose my insurance ... at any cost.

And that's a fucking scary reality, VGM

It will be over soon P...hang tough. I see it, I feel it in my bones - this b.s. is an epic failure and it's an instant victory for the republicans. The only thing I fear are the idiots who voted both Bush and Obama in and confirming each term just how stupid dense people really are.

Wow! I believe you. I thought you meant they totalled to that. My bad.

That's what I meant by over inflation with the bills. I've seen a shit ton of hospital bills and many of those numbers, including labs, are highly inflated due to expected loss when going to collect from responsible parties.

My mom's specialized labs were 1200. Routine bloodwork I doubt is as high, though it wouldn't surprise me if they tried.

There's an immune booster shot taken by chemo patients that varies from 300-12,000 dollars, I shit you not. When I saw the bill, I thought the 12k was the chemo itself. Nope. One tiny little shot at the end of each round. Hell, I wouldn't doubt that a combination of surgeries, chemo, and related care for the last 2.5 years totalled to at least half a mil in straight up billing from the hospital.

All of it is ridiculous, really. Getting sick in America is a scary thing. I can't fault them for trying with Obamacare, but it's obvious something needs to be done in America about the healthcare system and it's availability to everyone. We have sick care in this country, not healthcare.

^^^^Apologies. Very frustrated and tend to forget good people are easily deceived.

Many of those people are kicking themselves and calling themselves idiots.

It's hard when only the two big parties get publicity.

I can guarantee if Gary Johnson would have gotten more press, the Libertarians would have had a better shot.

I'm hoping people wake up and realize there's more than two choices.

+1..I'm hoping this 16 year stint is enough for people to do just that...and DO wake up.

To late for all that. Medicine will be socialized completely sooner than we think. This is jsut a test to see how America adapts. Its already in the works. Spoon feeding us at the moment.

The American sheep will adapt. The silent majority won't.

If it ever came down to it..I'd pay the penalty.

Blame the suppliers, the pharmaceutical companies. Healthcare costs skyrocketed when these companies, as well as hospitals and physicians, were allowed to start advertising and marketing, probably in the late 80s/early 90s.

Hospitals can't charge anyone else more than they charge medicare and they can't agree to a lesser payment from the patient than what medicare pays.

Most facilities will negotiate a cash rate discount and most of them have multitude levels of charity programs, yet people don't know to ask.

What a lot of people don't realize is the alleged inflated charges hospitals charge are because they have to factor the cost of salaries, utilities, equipment (some of that equipment cost the hospital thousands of dollars, paper, electronic records (which are required now), supplies, pharmaceutical charges, shipping charges, etc.

When you have a lab test, it is not only the lab test itself you're paying for - the reception clerk, the phlebotomist, the lab tech, the arm band, the vial, the needles, the reagents, the cost of the equipment to run the test, etc.

There are just a lot of hidden cost that the general public doesn't

I now have health Insurance through my job and I am damn happy!! Was on Medicaid for years.I paid a small cost monthly because it was based on my income and dependents but let me tell you, I would get the attitude from the snobby receptionists every time I had to call and make an appointment.

Health Care is a Social Status in this country and I'm fucking glad Obama shut this bullshit down.

FYI for those who don't know yet:

ACA = Obamacare

And it's not insurance.

Yes we know. But the ACA/Obamacare has contracted with insurance companies to provide the service, possibly for a "group" rate. You can go out on your own and find your own insurance as well.

The more people with chronic conditions on a plan, the more that plan will cost, thus the more risk that people will use the plan, and the more money the insurance company has to pay out. They rely on healthier people who don't use the insurance to keep it cost effective.

And, if you have a $ 3000 deductible before insurance pays anything, what are the chances you're going to actually go over that amount? So the insurance gets the money from you, but doesn't have to pay anything out on you. What's the practicality of paying for insurance when you likely won't ever have to use it? It's like pissing your money off in the wind. If you have an accident or surgery, yes, it will be beneficial, otherwise, it is just not practical.

Hopefully her attitude wasn't against you as a person, it was probably more against Medicaid. Medicaid is notorious for not wanting to cover things and paying the physician a lower rate than any other insurance, so the physician makes less money on a medicaid patient.

It sucks they made you feel that way. 😢

Thanks Truecap,

I got that for years, eventually I learned to just ignore it.
