My mother always tried to push me into it but so far it never interested me.

I think it's just one of the things she just fell in love with. Other cultures she fell in love with were Greece, Egypt and Africa. While we share Greece I'm still indifferent towards the other two.
The problem with schools is that they only have limited time to look at subjects. In my case we barely looked at the romen empire, prussia etc. but extensively at the WWII and the holocaust for ages. American history was only mentioned when I got a decent history teacher who was passionate about his topics during the last years in school.

That's only true if you want it to be. 29 is young, and it matters not what you achieved in the past but what you will do tomorrow. Your life is yours, it doesn't have to have rules, you dictate it however you want. Though you probably already understand this...so suit yourself, Chuckles.
