i came across this info and found it quite interesting:

according to a UNICEF survey, the percentage of women aged 15—49 who think that a husband is justified in hitting or beating his wife under certain circumstances is, for example: 90% in Afghanistan and Jordan, 87% in Mali, 86% in Guinea and Timor-Leste, 81% in Laos, 80% in Central African Republic.Refusing to submit to a husband's wishes is a common reason given for justification of violence in developing countries: for instance 62.4% of women in Tajikistan justify wife beating if the wife goes out without telling the husband; 68% if she argues with him; 47.9% if she refuses to have sex with him.

Traditionally, in most cultures, men had a legal right to use violence to "discipline" their wives; although in the US and many European countries this right was removed from them in the late 19th century/early 20th century, before the 1970s criminal arrests were very rare (occurring only in cases of extreme violence); and it was only in the 1990s that serious efforts and rigorous enforcement of laws had became standard policy in Western countries

Bangalis & the Pakistanis are the worst..they treat their women badly. Frequent beatings so they they could go out & cheat with black girls, etc.

Well, sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between a person joking around & an uneducated fool who gets his/her education about the world from a news channel. I've heard too many ignorant comments for all of them to be simply playfulness..somebody has got to believe in whatever they're talking about.

We also shouldn't put down other cultures and their men and women. If it works for them and their society, then it does. Or maybe they just don't know any better way.

You didn't quote anyone, specifically, but since this *is* about domestic violence-- I have to say that there's a fine line between bringing attention to a problem and "putting down" another culture.

And some consider the former to be equivalent to the latter.

Some women in those countries are good with it-- but many are not-- women are killed for the crimes committed against them by men.

In others, women can't even drive (I know, tiziani!)-- the barbarism against them to "keep them in line" is abhorrent-- and I think keeping quiet about it is one of the worst things we can do.

I was being flippant. Here in the west beating women or "disciplining" them is rare and looked down upon...not to mention illegal. So I just took it a step further and wondered what else we can adopt from developing countries. I'm sure some still don't have indoor plumbing...

Gotcha! We have the same laws too, but most women still think it's normal like I said. You'll find them comparing blackeyes as if they're beauty spots or something. Some are aware thou, but they're still too scared or embarrassed to report it. Same thing with spousal rape, most people don't believe in such things & would rather suffer in silence than go to the officials to talk about "family matters".

Why do you take offense? Even in the US (which, last I checked, is a developed country), not everyone has indoor plumbing, they use outhouses and/or have a "honey pot" in their home which they have to carry out and dump when full, whole communities even! Very commonplace in certain parts of the country. Some by choice... others, still waiting for funding from local, state and primarily federal sources.

As to the topic at hand... in many ways the physical abuse is much easier to deal with, those scars fade. It's the psychological, emotional and verbal abuse that is the heavier burden to bare, those scars will always remain...

Because some people see things on the media & believe that that's how every individual from those countries live. Example is those big headed kids with flies that they show when talking about Africa. Those kids that they show as "face of Africa" are Somali, one country out of 54 African countries. Some of us have never seen people like that in our lives.

Now you're telling me about America & poor service delivery in some places & I'm sitting here going WOW because all we get to see is your Time Squares, etc. I didn't know about your country's issues until I saw images of New Orleans during the hurricane & your comment above just took some more ignorance out of me.

Btw, in some forums we get to defend Africa a lot as Africans due to some dumb comments made by people who watch too much tv.

Some still believe we swing around naked from tree to tree. We eat mud pies filled with termites & more ignorant bs. Africa is good & bad like any other continent. It has it's beauty & it's ugly just like any place in the world. The most interesting thing is that as the most "backawards"continent in the world as some like to state-- we travel more than other people to educate ourselves, we're the most multilingual continent in the world because we're willing to learn from others while continuing to hold on to our respective cultures. Most of us speak several African languages including languages some European & Asian languages. And then you get some ignorant who can barely speak his 1st language (English), have never set a foot out of his "block" telling you bs about your country..when some of us have been to/currently in his country & actually have more truthful things to tell than hearsay.

restraining orders,no contact orders,etc..if your wife call the police and claim you smacked her, regardless if its any physical signs of it or not, you're still either going to jail, or you have to leave the house,even if it's yours

it's easy to say that, but sometimes its a lot of other factors at play, like a woman could overstep her boundaries and start coming at a man likes she's a man also,getting all in his face,being verbally disrespectful,etc..because if another MAN does this, it's almost considered normal for a man to react to that type of disrespect in a physical way, and you don't react that way because you know you can beat the guy( well some may think like that,lol)but only because is a natural reaction

A lady at my job died this weekend from domestic violence. I attended the memorial. She also lived in my neighborhood. Her co-workers were helping her move when he shot her to death. The divorce was finalized three before he murdered her.

My aunt just quite her job as the director of the domestic violence for her state program. She quite because the board of directors are neighborhood volunteers who really did not believe in the cause and saw the program as welfare. The obstinate attitude and covert racism was beating down her spirit.

What do you mean by a pot of grits? Do you guys burn your men too? I know over here that when a woman is fed up, she either cooks something up to throw over his head, or threaten to scald him with boiling water.

I knew a lady who was beaten so badly by her drunken boyfriend, he then went to sleep after he was done rearranging her face with fists. While he slept she boiled up a huge pot of water on the stove, added some oil & when it started bubbling, she carried it to the bedroom & emptied over his face & head. He died instantly..maybe from shock or whatever & she went to prison, but not for long.

My aries ex had a horrible temper & came too close for comfort on several occasions..he never did anything thou (except when he threw me with cup with coke). On moments like that I'd tell him "touch me & I'll baptise you, boy". I think that scared him since he also knew about the other lady.

LOL. Yeah that was exactly what I was talking about. It doesn't happen often but it's an ongoing joke in the black community. A black woman went to prison here for dumping hot grits on a boyfriend. He didn't die though. Haha. I didn't know they did that in Africa too, but I shouldn't be surprised.
