It really sucks. How do people stand being obese? Like I'm literally in pain. My leg bones hurt, major fatigue, taking multiple poops a day, trouble putting socks on, not to mention feeling like I'm about to explode and the fact the weight is straining my organs.

After highschool I was a normal 180. At 6"1 that's perfectly in the middle at what's considered healthy.

By 20 I was hiding 200. By 24 220, now at 25 and since I quit smoking I'm hitting 250 which is now obese in my opinion.

I need tips on what to do. Like what type of exercise is good in your opinion for losing fat? Maybe a diet you've tried that worked even. I don't really know what to do, and don't know what to trust with all these things claiming to be the best thing for weight loss.

I'd ask Google but don't want fed some bs that won't work. Something coming from personal experience would be great.

Being fat is truly bullshit imo. Maybe some people like it or enjoy it, but for me it's painful and needs to go away quick as possible.

I drank a large redbull, largely monster, and a 1 $ powerade so far. I drink that every day though.

That along with the weight gain could be why doctors think the blood pressure machine is broken every time they test me.

That's going to be the hardest part. Fighting an extremely large caffeine addiction

Thanks for all the tips though! I have to gain control of myself quick. Stroke and heart attack run in my family.

Agree with what others have written, reduce the amount of processed foods you eat.

How much water are you drinking? cut out tea and coffee, if you have sugar with them also there is tons of sugar in fruit juice as well as soft drinks

Don't sit for too long get up and walk around a bit, for as much as you can. You can exercise whilst sat down, look up 'Dynamic tension' exercise, its great, no need to go to the gym no need for weights, you can do it in your own home, it is how I keep trim after eating too much, it does take awhile to see results with this but I am sure you will see them if you work at it.

Try and find someone else in your position that also wants to lose weight, you can motivate each other and boost morale etc.

What about multi vitamins and minerals? are you taking any supplements?

Maybe get checked out for any food intolerances?

Pretty much anything bad you can imagine I've been indulging in the last few years.

Little to no water. Mostly energy and soft drinks.

Long periods of sitting. I work in tile, but I've slowed down tremendously since the bad fatigue. When I'm not at work I'm wasting time on the internet.

I eat lots of crap from gas stations. Almost anything from there is cheap and processed.

I do avoid fast food. Probably the only reason I'm even alive.

I take no vitamins.

Cardio cardio cardio!

Hop on an exercise bike, swim, or use an ellipitical. It'll help out your joints while you get that weight down.

Increase fruits and veggies in your diet, moderate carb and protein use. Less processed foods and sugars. Take baby steps in cutting out the bad foods in your diet. First few weeks, something like no more fried/greasy foods, and then tack on sugary drinks. replace these options with something else. Once you retrain your brain to crave healthier options, it'll make dieting all that much easier.

The reason most diets fail is because people take on too much at once. Baby steps. Since you don't have any apparent pressing health issues, you can take your time chipping away at your diet. But focus on getting some daily cardio in for at least 40 mins, which is the threshold in which your body starts burning fat effectively.

and no more energy drinks! they are terrible for you. they're either loaded with sugar or chemicals that mess up your metabolism.
If by "chemicals" you mean taurine and caffeine, then yes.

People have got to stop overusing words like "chemicals" and "toxins." It just translates to "I have no idea what mystery substances are so I'm going to give them this scary name."

Regardless, even if these stupid drinks are "sugar free" they're still junk. I don't understand the appeal other than those who rely on them usually eat like shit and don't sleep much. If you ate better foods and got adequate sleep, you wouldn't have to rely on something like stimulants to keep you awake and less tired.

try eating like my family did. every single person I know in my family is slim, and my immediate family is all technically underweight. so this might help you slim down.

first, fuck the anticarb hype. we ate a ton of carbs but lots of veggies and not too much animal products. no dairy.

here's what i remember. .

breakfast ~
*eggs with a bunch of vegetables, kimchi, pickled cucumber and miso soup. always homemade

lunch ~
*homemade tofu noodle soup in a thermos, pear, more veggies & kimchi, and one pack of rice crackers

dinner ~
*usually a spicy veggie soup with lots of sprouts, rice, and either fish (always whole fresh fish from the fish market) or fermented tofu

and pretty much always boricha (tea) to drink or room temp water (my mother thought cold water was bad for digestion).

sweets were really not a thing, or snacking at all really. except for special events or stopping for a boba after school when there were boba shops nearby.

good luck ๐Ÿ™‚

I'm having my husband on this type of diet now since he wants to lose weight too, and it's working on him, but it's hard for him since he's not used to eating like that.

is taurine a made up chemical by the guy who created red bull? he's a taurus and i guess he had a theme going with red bull.
Taurine, or 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid, is an organic acid widely distributed in animal tissues. It is a major constituent of bile and can be found in the large intestine, and accounts for up to 0.1% of total human body weight.

so he didn't make it? taurine is the active ingredient in red bull.

German chemists Leopold Gmelin and Friedrich Tiedemann discovered taurine by isolating the compound from an oxโ€™s bile. Bile is produced in the liver and is stored and secreted by the gall bladder as a digestive juice that aids in digestion. Upon release from the gallbladder, bileโ€™s function is focused on the digestion of fats from the foods that we eat. The name taurine came from the latin word โ€œtaurusโ€ which means bull or ox for it was isolated from a castrated adult male bull.

true. but I'd be surprised if someone ate like this for a long time and was still overweight. he asked for personal experience, and that's what I gave him.

but the best thing to do would probably be to go to the doctor to rule out any health issues that might contribute to weight gain.
Well yeah, but your statement was "eat like my family, we're all skinny" when you've shared that you can't gain weight if you wanted to try. That implies either genetics or hyperthyroidism.

The diet in itself, there's nothing wrong, but when you compare his genes to your genes, there's no guarantee it'll consistently work.

There's been a lot of studies and research done about fat cells. They tend to expand with no limitations and kind of get a "memory" from when they were big before. It's been considered when people lose weight and struggle keeping it off, due to those pesky fat cells that want to go back to being as big as they were.

You know what, now that I really think about it I'm sick of it. I'm tired of letting myself become controlled by objects that have no real reason to exist other then to get me addicted to their products so I spend all my money on it. 5 $ a redbull, about 4 $ a monster, and I'm more then happy to pay that. It just takes advantage of the human brain and releases serotonin so they get highly addicted, just like any drug. I'm extremely weak to addictions. I'm the reason they make large cans of energy drinks, because I'm so easy to control I need more and more that eventually I'm paying 10 $ a day for two to support the growing habit.

It was the same with my tobacco addiction. I had that on top of the caffeine addiction mind you. 10 year 2 pack a day tobacco habit on top of my still existing 2 energy drink a day habit. How am I even able to walk out of my house and go to work? But I fought the tobacco addiction, and won. I was tried of the control, and tired of the fact it had the ability to make decisions for me. I didn't smoke because I wanted to, I smoked because the tobacco was making life threatening decisions for me. I didn't want a fake object making my decisions anymore, so I fought it can conquered it. The actual need for tobacco wasn't even real, though it had me completely fooled that it was. Not anymore though.

That's very true. I've seen people quit the gym and bounce back to their initial weight. It's something you have to continuously maintain.

OP, you don't need to follow any fancy or mainstream diet. Weight will literally start shedding when you make healthier food choices alone. As for getting into exercising, you don't have to start anything intense right off the bat, start with substituting driving with more walking. Park as far as you can from destinations. Always use the stairs. Elevators are so boring plus who likes waiting.

Lay off the coffee, go for tea instead with no added sugar. Drink tons of water. So serious about water, you need to force yourself to drink it periodically throughout the day even if you don't want to. Sometimes people can eat meals and feel like they're not full enough just to end up overeating by grabbing dessert when they could've had a cup of water afterwards instead to fill them up equally. Thirst and hunger get interchanged a lot which I think is the cause of most weight gains.

If you enjoy carbs, instead of going cold turkey on them, switch to whole grain pasta, rice, cereal, and bread. Whole grain makes you feel fuller with less serving and is much healthier.

Start decreasing your sweet intake. Substitute to dark chocolate treats to satisfy your sweet tooth. It'll taste nasty at first, but you'll adjust after a few days or so. That's how I stopped my sweet intake and now I find sugary food revolting.

Decrease the amount of processed food you buy. Have oatmeal for breakfast. You can change it up for yourself by adding blueberries or even bananas and a bunch of other healthy toppings.

Start eating avocados. They fill you up so much and can be put in a variety of dishes and salads. And of course eat other veggies, they're all good for you, go crazy with them.

Strictly have greek yogurt (no yoplait crap) and opt for healthier snack foods like these to cure your munchies:

http://www.amazon.com/Sensible-Portions-Veggie-Straws-Original/dp/B001MUZYWQ
http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/products/bearitos-veggie-puffs-snacks
They taste like popcorn and potato chips but much healthier ๐Ÿ˜„

Have fruits for snacks, those mandarin cuties are the bae.

If you want to treat yourself, go out for authentic Asian cuisines at China Town with foreign ass names instead of the Americanized version restaurants full of MSG. Be sure to read reviews beforehand lol.

Also red bull/monster energy drinks are made out of cow dung.

Try to drink water instead of caffeine each time you feel the need for caffeine. Put some lemon slices in water or other vegtables if you hate the plain water. Walking and green tea are soo good for blood pressure, bananas as well. Theres so much you can do. Now focus on your diet , if you messed up your diet then go for a walk.
Its for your own health, im sure you can do it.
Beside youve noticed and identify the problem so thats the first step to solve any problem! Youre in the right path, you just need your own ability that you have to guide yourself.

...vegetables in water? Why? :/

Most people are inclined to put fruit in their water to give it flavor, not vegetables.

Just tweak and adapt.

Figure out your daily calories http://www.eattoperform.com/eat-to-perform-calculator/

Adjust accordingly. Get active a few times a week. It took a while to gain it might take a while to lose. But the point is your health. Focus on that and the other pieces will fall into place.

Stress also causes weight gain so chill. Get happy friend.

Considering that you have an addictive personality, when you start to make changes, replace cravings with something else. When I was cutting back on sweets, if I had a craving, I'd either take a couple swigs of juice or eat a piece of fruit instead. Eventually, my brain switched over to associating that "feel good" feeling from sugary stuff with fruit or something healthier that also fulfilled that sweet craving. Same thing eventually happened with veggies. Now I physically feel blah whenever I don't get enough fruits and veggies in my diet.

When getting off of junk like that, it's very much like breaking an addiction. Find something else that's a healthier alternative that can do any time you crave an energy drink.

You do realize that the reason walking worked is because it works cardio right? Cardio is THE fat burner in the body. This ignorant trend where people fixate on resistance training is ridiculous. I had a friend who was doing Zumba and lost a considerable amount of weight. But then she started listening to her dudebro gym rat friend and switched over to weight training. Needless to say, it hasn't been nearly as effective and her weight loss plateaued for the last year.

Resistance is good in the sense that when you add on muscle mass it keeps your metabolism going. But if you seriously want to shed weight, it's all about the cardio. That heart rate goes up and it starts a chain reaction of events in the body that start burning through those fat stores.

Minimum of 40 mins, ideal is 60, daily. It can be something as simple as walking (brisk if you can help it).

Another thing to note, OP is that it can take 6-8 weeks to physically see changes. People get discouraged when they don't get immediate results.

Imo, straight cardio... start walking.

Use the treadmill, if you can-- less distraction and it's

easy to time yourself and/ or see how far you've gone.

And it becomes addicting, which is good.

Plus you won't start bulking up.. you'll just burn the

weight off.

You'll probably end up jogging soon after, but it feels

good and the results are fairly quick.

What do you think of HIIT? A lot of people swear that's the holy grail to weight loss and that it's superior to sustained cardio.

My husband gets suckered into "one weird trick to burning stubborn belly fat" type of nonsense. he has been taking ice showers to shiver away the calories and he could open a GNC with all the crazy supplements he buys after reading about them on Bodybuilding.com forums...smh

now he thinks he can replace all exercise with 5 minutes of extremely intense training. Color me skeptical.

I'm trying to help him separate the wheat from the chaff, or better yet, just stick to common sense health principles and be patient.

I do HIIT spin twice a week. It doesn't hurt and it burns more calories so you can eat that cheeseburger.

I belong to a group for people with autoimmune hypothyroidism, and weight and exercise are both extremely challenging for us. I won't get into the diet debate, but I know what works for us specifically.

As to HIIT, it's VERY popular in that group. We actually aren't supposed to do any intense catdio or weights, and at any given time there will be periods when we literally don't have the energy to do hour long workouts. And when we do, it takes days to recover. HIIT gives the body a chance to rest, but y

What ever crap you're eating now and you know what they are....stop. then get your lazy ass up and go do something like walk or lift weights. With all that weight you put on, yiu should be able to lift something. All this said with love. Bye.
Lifting weights won't do much for him at this point.. Unless you just want to be a buff mofo (Ewww)

I think he is just looking to lose some weight, not turn into The Hulk ๐Ÿ˜›
Agreed

Weights are your worst enemy at the beginning

Not true at all, I have a lot of friends that are trainers and nutritionists. A few at my gym too, all the travel cows that they train, they mix cardio in with weights, even starting out with light ones is fine. It doesn't have to be heavy.

I lost 140lbs in 12 months NO exercise only walking

I've kept the weight off for 6 years no regular exercise at all just walking and sometimes dancing lol

HIIT isn't bad, tbh. What's nice about it is that you're getting in high intensity work outs and it's constantly changing. It's quick, can be fun for those who enjoy that type of thing, and is effective. There's something called a crossover effect, if I remember correctly, that occurs at about the 20 minute mark. Depends on each individual. We all tested ourselves while doing VO2 max testing and it was interesting to see when exactly we reached that threshold where the body switches from carb stores to fat stores.

But because that 20 minute mark exists, people go oh well, I can do something high intensity for 20 minutes and then do it again later. It "jump starts" my metabolism.

...no? "Oh well my mentor said that's how it is." (said by a friend of mine)

Your "mentor" is someone who has a bachelors in athletic training. You and I both know that degree doesn't cover full exercise science. At least my "mentors" have PhDs on the topic. Sorry, but I'll follow science. It's just maddening that you have to fight against such ridiculous bullshit in this area. People will believe anything they hear because guys, most of all, will go off of anecdotal evidence. Remember, this is the same gender who refuses to go to the doctor when their arm is falling off.

Five minutes of intense training won't do shit, sorry. Physiologically, your body isn't even beginning to work into that threshold when you burn fat.

Health benefits though? 30 minutes of any activity daily helps with heart health. Even splitting that into 3 ten minute intervals will give you heart health benefits. But it's not the same for weight loss because you have to get into those threshold where your heart rate is high enough to do some work. Five minute intense work outs may be good for some health benefits, but not weight loss.

Shivering will also not make you lose weight nor will those e-stim belts turn your flab into a six pack.

A lot of these fairy tales are perpetuated off of a single study where they MAY find evidence that SUGGESTS maybe x or y is the case, but it's one study and it hasn't been peer reviewed or considered conclusive evidence.

Walking and dancing ARE forms of exercise. Walking is especially recommended for people who have weak knees and can't handle high impact jogging/running.
This is why I suggested the exercises that I did for the OP. He complained of joint pain, so swimming, exercise bikes or ellipitcals would be good because it's low impact on the knees. Swimming is awesome because you get cardio and resistance at the same time. Knock all that shit in one fell swoop haha.

Energy drinks actually artificially boost metabolism. Exactly why I drink one before my walks.

You don't either.

Come on guys, I didn't take all these fucking classes (anatomy, physiology, exercise physiology, biomechanics, injury prevention, exercise prescription, etc) and get assigned research papers up the ass and NOT learn about this shit. lolz that you two are telling me that I "don't understand." Bitch please.

"DERP EAT ORGANIC AND LIFT WEIGHTS."

Stfu. Stupidest thing said in this thread, tbh.

You mention that you take no vitmains, you need to supplement your diet with these, Vitamin C can help reduce the symptoms of withdrawal when you stop taking things that you have become addicted to.
I add some Vit C powder whenever I have a cup of water at work, helps keep the colds away, as well as adding a bit of flavour.
Vitamin D is also very important.
Cider vinegar can also help to reduce your appetite, again add some to water and drink 10 mins before eating a meal.
Your body can produce plenty of hormones to make you feel good, best way I have to release them is to breathe deeply and concentrate on my breathing.
Lastly try to become more aware of your body, it is important, without it you do not live! find somewhere comfortable where you can relax, maybe lying down in bed, and then concentrate on each part in turn, start at one end of the body and work towards the other, if you fall asleep there it is not a problem.
By becoming more self aware you will recognise the signals when your body is telling you that you are full and to stop eating, as well as other messages from your brain.
