the lads in my kid's school that are obnoxious and showing signs of being misogynistic listen to rap music and use the same *lingo* that they hear in the songs. They post pics of themselves on FB, smoking joints, wearing rapper style garb and try to look hard. Had they not have listened to that music, they probably wouldnt have adopted that attitude, living in rural Ireland. My kid says they are ignorant, clueless, disrespectful idiots

it's definitely out there, though not always front-and-center of mainstream top 40 music. general audiences tend to gravitate toward dumb, offensively "edgy" or materialistic lyrics(i.e. chief keef, riff raff, gucci mane, soulja boy, lil' jon)as long as it features solid beats & the song is danceable.

i recall azealia banks was quoted in an interview as saying that she felt mainstream modern hip-hop was essentially a minstrel show dressed up as entertainment. unfortunately, she made an excellent & valid point in her observation.
