Nothing left?

I don't appreciate much current rap or hip hop aside from a few sporadically released singles. I like being able to appreciate an artist - not some electronic mass produced piece of catastrophe. I like my music similar to how I like my men - not too short, quality, and able to hold their own. 😛

There are probably 4 artists in rap that I appreciate and are alive and making music today. Busta Rhymes used to be included but then he signed over to Lil Wayne's company.

I don't see how you could even come to questioning me about 'WTF YOU KNOW ABOUT HIP HOP AND RAP?'

Let's go over that, shall we?

Do you know who I am?
Where I came from?
Who my family is?
Where my ancestors came from?
My experiences growing up?
What I've been exposed to?
Who I am as a person?
What is on my mind in the moments before I fall asleep?

Where in ANY piece of the puzzle from the exposure you've had pertaining to me, as a person - would make you have the right to question the derivative for my appreciation of quality hip hop?

I feel sad for Robbin Gibb's death a few days ago (of The Bee Gees)

Cant say I feel sympathy for some hood rap artist who sooner or later was going to end up this way anyway, considering the type of people and environment he surrounded himself with. It was more like an accident waiting to happen. His contribution to rap is overrated anyway, happens with a bunch of dead artists.

I heard about that too. My grandmother was devastated 😢 It was on her anniversary too, so sort of an odd day for her emotion-wise.

I wouldn't agree with you there, but I can see where you're coming from in the first piece of your paragraph. Despite that, the same argument can be made with other artists that surrounded themselves with destructive environments that played a part in their death.

On somewhat related note.. it seems like there's been a lot of notable artists dying these past couple months.

I can't solidly categorize an artist that I enjoy or put them in comparison. At a certain point SOME piece of their artistry (whether created, home grown, and let's face it - bought) has 'hit home' at another piece of my human existence with another aspect of my soul, head, or heart. Some I understood, helped me reflect, made me vibe out, or just giggle at (example of that is always: I like to rhyme. I like my beef funky - I'm spunky. I like my oatmeal lumpy) 😛

Above all though, I do respect the old greats who opened the door for different exposures and way of sound. I enjoy tons of different sounds and that list is constantly growing (even from this thread too; thanks 25th - I've been listening for some of the day now, actually).

I could probably say I am undecided between the two... But I'm indecisive by nature.

They're too different to even compare imo, I can find pros/cons in both.. I can only listen to some of pacs shit, There's not one big song I can't listen to that's all. I listen to anticon and aesop and shit like that which I really like, but I can't compare them to big..*shrug* Whoever I can listen to the most is the best imo and I write and battle so I'm not just makin' shit up.

Smh...why waste your time? People love tupac(no problem with that) and his contribution to the genre (glorification of life style , slightly more educated take on poetry, appeal to women primarily). RARELY is it taken into account that Biggie was a better poet...period. say it and people want to fight because there is heaven for a thug and only god can judge them, westside all day. *roll eyes

DEFINITELY get ya there. Especially the last one. You still hear girls talking about how 'sexy Tupac was'. I mean.. yes, he was attractive but it seems like some of his exposure post mortem still thrives on his looks and appeal with females.

Awww really? Thanks I appreciate that. There'll be more originals uploaded on youtube very soon. Mostly just good compositions from the mind of moi but more of his stuff too. I keep trying to get wgamador to listen to "concrete"..it came from a poem I wrote here. Rich thought it was marketable so I penned a 70's-esque piece with some willie hutch-esque strings and handwritten drums. When I remix/master it, and add the trombone solo...bam. two radio ready versions... #excited
Sorry...sorry..back to the thread. ILoveMusic

Ain't no shame in talking about your art and the hard work you've put into it! Keep me updated with uploads and all; I'm not musically inclined (instrumental and composition wise) WHATSOEVER myself and it makes unique/creative sound and art THAT much more 'real' to me.

I played the flute for a year and only played a note... once.. 😭 Hah!

The saddest thing is how young he was when he died.. 24?... That makes me sad.

I was thinking the same thing. It's devastating when parents outlive their children. Earlier today I found myself wondering about his mother and how she has gone through seeing her son's 'life after death'. I wonder how she feels hearing his business she didn't know, seeing his face, listening to his music, dealing with the public.. everything.

Btw even 30 is considered fairly old having that kind of life style . He was a beast, I don't see the need for pity on him really..

Sweetheart, please note that pity was NOT mentioned. For me at least, there is a massive world of difference between 'feeling sad' and 'having pity' for another. I have never pitied somebody that I have respected, and vice versa.

I can't imagine the despair of burying kin. I hope and pray that I never do either, and would *never* dare wish it on a mortal enemy.

I think we both know by now that I'm not saying sweetheart in any other way but genuine. I'm just too awkward to not have a disclaimer about it 😉

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOF. Totally didn't see the slip of the 'p word' til now! Tsk tsk.

I was thinking about this thread today in the car after a Biggie song came on. Tupac idolized tons of great artists.. and from that drew so much artistically and intellectually .. While Biggie (although having private schooling for some years) did not enjoy such historic art to the level Tupac did.

So I pose this question: does it make an artist more meaningful and impressive when they have less knowledge and exposure to 'great artists' in history?

Tupac had private schooling. . To answer your Q though, no not imo. There can be original ideas and concepts, but everyone is influence by someone before them whether they acknowledge that or not. Whatever the genre, the more knowledge you have about it's origins the better your creativity will be in it. The more you know about other style s and their roots, the more you can expand or incorporate one style with another..

So did Biggie.

I don't know - it says more to me if a person is singular in their gains. It's more pure to me that way; no hindsight.

as for someone who said that biggie wasa better poet.. . simply silly. pacs poetry was not just his music, but in his poems that he wrote when he was younger(can find them on the internet, and they really show a different side to him), he was into music, but he used it to voice his political views, and those that are familiar with the CIA's row in the MLK jr, Malcom X murder, and the elimination of the Panther Party wouldnt be shocked to find that 2pacs murder is none the different, and this fact alone holds the weight that 2pac is 'better'-not from a musical sense-but from his influence. at age 13, when pac was asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, he replied" a revolutionary".
