and the loan process.

I'm in the middle of getting my loan squared away and the dealership is all set for me to take the car home. I was going to bring it home today, but am going to see if they're cool with me leaving it there until the loan finalizes and hope they aren't dicks and sell it out from under me.

I just do not feel comfortable driving it around while the financing hasn't been finalized because worst case scenario, you know? I read around online about this situation and it seems highly recommended to hold off on taking the car until you have everything finalized and there were some horror stories behind what some people experienced.

Anyone else come across this in their car buying experience? If so, what did you do in your situation?

I read "squared" as "squandered" and read onwards but by the time i came to the end of the sentence i knew something was wrong because you weren't raging as i'd expect from a person of your character whose loan just got squandered by the car dealership.

Well not in Wisconsin, so it must vary by state. I wouldn't take a car off a lot unless I knew the financing was secured, and I'm financially experienced. I know what can happen. Ever heard of lawsuits for destruction of unsecured property?

Yeah, it does vary, state to state. Cali tends to protect consumers like whoa. But what you mentioned is EXACTLY why I hesitate taking it off the lot. What if something happens between then and now to the car and financing drops out? All the "what ifs" are making me pause. I haven't gone by yet to talk to them about waiting til the financing, but was just curious what others here might have experienced if they'd been faced with this before.

I would think as long as you insure the vehicle before you drive it off the lot, it shouldn't be a problem even though the financing part of it isn't done yet.

My biggest concern is them selling it out from under me, though I don't think they can. Everything has been signed, including DMV paperwork. I did all this last night with the intent of picking it up today. The car has paper plates ready and everything. The fact that they let me hold off on picking it up til today is also promising a little. They didn't give me a hard time about waiting til today, but that's just a day, not 10.

Hopefully all is good though. I'm just incredibly tired so I'm uber worry wart atm. It's been a crazy week for me so it's like FGHAJKGHKA GAH haha.

My biggest worry was picking out the car, applying, then leaving for lunch and my trade in getting hit in the meantime.
Fortunately, there isn't a trade in involved. They also have my down payment, so I'd like to think that they aren't going to be dicks about selling it. Legally, I don't think they can at this point.

That's a little odd that they did that. I had that happen when I was in college where I bought a car before the financing was complete. I think they did it because the guy wanted to make a sale. So I drove it around for a few days before they asked for it back lol..because I was just a po' college student. I wouldn't drive it just to be sure until the financing goes through in a couple of days. What kinda car did you get?

Mazda 3!

I hope all this pans out without a hitch though. It's funny how I came across this car. It's almost a "fate" thing. I'd initially planned on going to another dealership to look at another car I'd been leaning more toward getting. I'd come across this one too, but it was a tad out of my price range AND it was my IDEAL car. Turns out first dealership opened later, and we'd intended on heading over in the morning, so it was like why the hell not? Test drove it, negotiated it down to where I wanted it price wise, etc. Left to go check the other dealer and that car had... not been very well taken care of. And I didn't like how it drove as a manual. I'd driven one before and LOVED it, but it was auto.

But the Mazda 3 is THE car I was aiming for, so I hope this pans out. Tbh, even if they are of the shady variety, I know they're trying to get rid of this car. It's been on their lot for 3 months and it's a manual. To have a girl show up, WANTING a manual, and then being stubborn as fuck, it works in my favor haha.

Why is your loan processing taking more than a day? Are you going through a credit union, or obtaining funding from a direct lender? The only time I have ever seen it take more than a few hours to obtain loan documents and lending in CA, is when you are using a small propitiatory bank loan. They have so many lending requirements, it's not funny. Long forms, cancellation contracts, etc.. for any automobile purchase, and the large banks process these items quickly. Whereas. the smaller banks, do not. Technically speaking, in CA, with the cancellation contract, you have up to 100 miles to drive the car and cancel the loan without any ramifications for you as the consumer.

Typically, a dealership still has insurance coverage for the car, even if you remove the car from the lot. Most will tell you in the event something happens, that you state such. Legally, they HAVE to hold liability coverage to cover their assets.

I ask these questions because what I do for a living is dealing with lenders, funding, and other financial crap that is boring within this very industry.

Generally speaking, IF you have a deposit on the car, this is considered earnest money, like when you buy a home. I'd say it's highly unlikely they could/would sell it "out from under you", with money down.

Oh - and I did sell cars for about 8 months in my younger days. Not in CA of course.
Yeah, I was reading around about the "deposit" situation. My down payment is there, so I don't think they have a leg to stand on as far as selling it.

I just get paranoid when I'm tired haha.

My baby (car) died on me on Thursday afternoon. That, combined with some other life shit going on, it's headdesk. I'm basically on "high alert" mode atm. I go around anticipating worst case and do what I can to prevent worst case.

This ish better work out. This is an early birthday present to myself haha.

I wouldn't worry. Unless you're buying one of those high demand, limited stock cars where the dealer would have no problem throwing you under the bus if someone came along with a higher offer because they just had to have the car.

Yeeeah, like I mentioned with Chance, this car has been on their lot for 3 months. It's a manual, which is jokingly referred to as a natural theft deterrent. They're probably stoked they're finally getting rid of it.

Rocky - a manual trans Mazda 3, I'd say the probability of them selling it out from under you is less than 1% .

You are worrying about nothing. They can't give a way cars with manual transmissions in WI, unless it's some expensive sports car, like a Corvette, Camaro or Mustang.
Haha I knooow. That's what I love most about this situation.

It was a bitch finding a car with manual.

"Search results- 350"

*clicks on "manual" filter*

"Search results- 5"

Once I learned how to drive manual on my current Mazda, it's like yeah, I'm not going back to auto. Swapping out that clutch for 150 was a dream vs 2k for auto trans.

I'm basically getting a newer version by 10 years of my current car. That shifting on the new one tho.

I would get it checked first by a mechanic. Lemons are real. But I'm sure it's a great deal nobody drives manual

My approval process for anything has been 5 minutes but I've never bought a car on loan just cash
California has some of the strictest laws in regards to Lemon Laws. It is very biased towards the consumer. But it is still a good idea to get it PPE Inspection.

I'm just surprised you've never bought car from a dealer before lol how old are you
The last one I got, I paid cash. 🙂

Not from a dealer I'm sure.

I do not get the purpose of this comment. I typically get along with you, but I feel like this comment is just to poke.

There are a lot of financially secure people, whom do not finance even brand new cars with minimal mileage. And an even greater portion that have the financial wherewithal to not get themselves into debt at a younger age, when they realize that their financial stability is not at the optimal level.

I refused to finance an automobile up until I was 25, for the simple fact that, it wasn't smart to do so in my opinion until I had a career set and the financial security that would allot for me to maintain all my bills, and car payments in the event that I lost my job for a minimum of 3-4 months without gainful employment.

I have had multiple cars, albeit a few years used, that I paid outright in cash from a dealer. I have a mother whom is very well off, that just bought a brand new Lexus with 18 miles on it, in straight cash, from a dealer.

There are people whom have the financial capacity to buy things at a cash value, and not in a cheap context as your comment suggests.

Nice Congrats!

I like those cars. I was looking at a Mazda 6 a couple of years ago. I like the styling..classy but still a bit sporty. The great gas mileage is bonus and the horsepower is enough to scoot in and out of traffic.

That's great that you went in with a plan. They usually ask you what you'd like to pay and then try to get you to pay a little more than that..knowing that you won't walk over a thousand or two. I always act like I'll just walk out if I don't like their offer no matter how much I like the car. I did the same thing that you did when I bought my Audi last April. I saw how long it had been on the lot and went in knowing that they'd be a little motivated to sell it and cash money always talks lol

It's fun to drive manual. I have an automatic but I always drive with one hand on the wheel and one hand on the shifter..just out of habit.

I realized I did make the mistake by stating preferred monthly payment vs total price of the car. However, I did get the car for 2500 below market value, so that's a bonus.

I was amused watching them do their song and dance though, coming in and out of the office to go "talk to the manager" about the pricing.

I'm not a fan of being pressured. The last time I car shopped, I walked away from the dealership because they were pressuring me, being assholes and just pissing me off. They were tripping all over themselves to rectify it haha. "Wait, come back!"

*middle finger* Bye.
