Just finished watching American Psycho for the first time. I really enjoyed it! However, I'm having trouble figuring out whether the murders took place or it was illusory. Any thoughts?

I didn't know there was a book- I'm going to read that as well and see how the movie compares.

I plan on reading the book, but those who did read it still don't have a strong grasp of what really happened in the end. I'm thinking it was all illusory. To me the biggest clue was that in the beginning of the movie Bateman's secretary was wearing trousers; but as soon as he asked her to change her style of dress, she did so. Yet, at the end when she's in his office reading his journal she's wearing her trousers still. To me, that was a huge red flag as to the reality of the events in between.

It's pretty obvious from the title:

American (as in - American Dream) Psycho.

Everything with American in the title - is just a dream...

"American Beauty"

"American Pie"
