How To Recognize Each Myers-Briggs Personality Type In Real Life

Because cognitive functions are the truest determinants of type, this article will explore typing through the lens of individual functions. The best way to determine type is to identify which of the four perceiving functions (Either Se, Si, Ne or Ni) and which of the four decision making functions (Either Te, Ti, Fe or Fi) an individual uses most often and which order they use them in. Keep in mind that of those two dominant functions, one must be introverted and one must be extroverted. From that point, their tertiary and inferior functions follow logically.

Stacking Of Cognitive Functions By Type:

ENFP: Ne – Fi – Te – Si
INFP: Fi – Ne – Si – Te
INFJ: Ni – Fe – Ti – Se
ENFJ: Fe – Ni – Se – Ti
ISTJ: Si – Te – Fi – Ne
ESTJ: Te – Si – Ne – Fi
ISTP: Ti – Se – Ni – Fe
ESTP: Se – Ti – Fe – Ni
INTJ: Ni – Te – Fi – Se
INTP: Ti – Ne – Si – Fe
ENTJ: Te – Ni – Se – Fi
ENTP: Ne – Ti – Fe – Si
ISFJ: Si – Fe – Ti – Ne
ISFP: Fi – Se – Ni – Te
ESFJ: Fe – Si – Ne – Ti
ESFP: Se – Fi – Te – Ni

Things to keep in mind when determining type:

-Everyone uses their extroverted function when interacting with others but if someone is an introvert, their extroverted function is not their dominant function. For example, an INTJ’s dominant function is Ni but they use Te to interact with the outside world – which may cause them to seem like an ENTJ in some social situations.

-To determine if someone is an extrovert or introvert while typing, you can use traditional methods of determining where he or she falls on the dichotomy. I.e. Look at whether they seem more energized or more drained after a few hours of social interaction (indicating extroversion and introversion respectively).

-To determine an introvert’s type, you will need to examine their dominant function as it supports their extroverted function – I.e. If someone’s dominant function is Fe but you suspect they are an introvert, you can determine if they lead with Si or Ni by turning your attention to how they support others – is it through concrete, practical methods (Si), or through gaining a thorough understanding of how the person’s mind operates (Ni)?

-If someone is an extrovert, you can determine their auxiliary function by examining what they use to back up their dominant function – I.e. If they are a dominant extroverted sensor, do they prioritize engaging with interesting new people (Indicating auxiliary Fi) or with exciting new physical challenges (Indicating auxiliary Ti)?

-Once you know someone’s dominant and auxiliary functions, their tertiary and inferior functions necessarily follow.

-In order to type someone accurately, you need to observe which cognitive functions he or she uses most consistently, across a range of different situations. Any type can call on any cognitive function if absolutely necessary – but at the end of the day, type is determined by which functions naturally and consistently provide their user with the most energy.

Extroverted Intuition (Ne):

Ne Dominant Types: ENFP/ENTP
Secondary Ne Users: INTP/INFP

How to spot them:

- Ne dominant types experience bursts of high energy, followed by periods of reclusion.

- They are quick-witted and gain energy through debating ideas.

- They enjoy discussing possibilities above all else.

- They want to explore every side of a given situation and may be more prone to playing ‘devil’s advocate’ than other types.

- They tend to jump from topic to topic with ease and enthusiasm.

- They may directly contradict themselves multiple times while speaking.

- They enjoy using metaphors to explain things – their metaphors are prone to gaining complexity as they speak, which excites the Ne user.

- Ne dominant types bore quickly and almost always have a new project on the go.

- These types usually advocate for keeping your options open, exploring all possibilities and taking an unconventional approach to solving problems.

Introverted Intuition (Ni):

Ni Dominant Types: INTJ, INFJ
Secondary Ni Users: ENTJ, ENFJ

How to spot them:

- Everything an Ni dominant type does is deliberate. You will likely get the sense that they have carefully (but covertly) planned out their actions and words.

- They may ask many questions in conversation, but questions tend to be open-ended. I.e. “Can you tell me more about that,” As opposed to, “When did that happen?”

- They prefer sticking to one topic of conversation but may feel the need to ‘explain around’ the topic if they are unable to convey the essence of it concisely.

- Ni dominant types usually pause to fully take in and consider what you have said in conversation before replying.

- They may also return to a topic of conversation weeks after you’ve had it, having processed and analyzed what you’ve said more fully.

- They enjoy talking about future possibilities in a linear fashion.

- These types have a lot of ‘epiphanies’ or ‘realizations.’

- Ni dominant types often give off a stoic or “Zen” vibe.

- These types usually advocate for thinking through your options carefully, optimizing your experiences and keeping your long-term objectives in mind at all times.

Extroverted Sensing (Se):

Se Dominant Types: ESFP, ESTP
Secondary Se Users: ISFP, ISTP

How to spot them:

- Se dominant types are highly in tune with their environments and are constantly scanning their surroundings.

- They may be more physically ‘wired’ than other types and have trouble sitting still.

- Se users tend to be ‘up for anything’ and don’t mind changing or hopping on board with plans at the last minute.

- They tend to make very direct observations about people and situations – they don’t beat around the bush and are the masters of saying what everyone else was secretly thinking.

- They enjoy slapstick or ‘obvious’ humour.

- They enjoy the ‘finer things in life’ and may be particularly attracted to expensive gadgets or high fashion.

- Dominant Se users are almost always present and engaged in conversation, unless something in the immediate environment is distracting them.

- These types usually advocate for ‘Just going for it’ – that is, following your gut instinct and approaching what you want directly.

Introverted Sensing (Si):

Si Dominant Types: ISTJ, ISFJ
Secondary Si Users: ESTJ, ESFJ

How to spot them:

- Si users have excellent memories when it comes to specific facts and occurrences and will usually remember things you’ve mentioned only in passing.

- They are incredibly detail-oriented and usually ask for specific clarifications in conversation (I.e. “Where did you meet up? What day?”)

- They are uncomfortable with the ambiguous and in conversation, they prefer relaying relevant facts to speculating. I.e. when discussing possibilities for the future, they will point out what has happened in a similar situation in the past.

- They enjoy having things planned out in a predictable fashion.

- Si users tend to place a higher value on tradition, social conventions and status than other types.

- These types usually advocate for using the tried and true method, referencing the facts that already exist on the matter and assuming that the future will resemble the past.

Introverted Thinking (Ti):

Ti Dominant Types: ISTP, INTP
Secondary Ti Users: ESTP, ENTP

How to spot them:

- Introverted thinkers like talking about facts or theories and information – when conversation turns to people or events, you can almost see their eyes glazing over.

- Dominant introverted thinkers require a great deal of alone time. They aren’t shy about overtly ignoring others if they infringe on this.

- Dominant Ti users often have a grumpy or aloof demeanour but a good sense of humour beneath it.

- In conversation, they may ask slightly different versions of the same question multiple times, as they try to figure out precisely how it fits in with what they already know.

- They may zone out of conversations as they relate what you’re saying to their current understanding of the topic – and then zone back in to ask clarifiers.

- Dominant introverted thinkers may have trouble explaining something in a direct way – they tend to branch off and get lost explaining different components of how a given system works.

- Ti dominants are indifferent to most small-scale decisions and will avoid making them whenever possible.

- These types usually advocate for looking at things objectively, questioning everything and ensuring you understand a given situation fully before making a decision about it.

Extroverted Thinking (Te):

Te Dominant Types: ENTJ, ESTJ
Secondary Te Users: INTJ, ISTJ

How to spot them:

- Extroverted thinking types are extremely goal oriented. They will usually ask you about your own goals, either subtly or overtly.

- They enjoy talking about plans they have and the expected outcomes of those plans.

- If you go to a Te user with a problem, they will immediately jump to solving it as quickly and effectively as possible.

- Te users are bothered by inefficiency and strongly dislike people being late or veering off topic if there’s work to be done.

- Dominant Te types may come across as bossy or know-it-all-ish, even when they genuinely mean well.

- They will always argue from a results-based, purely practical standpoint.

- These types usually advocate for staying organized, setting goals and making whatever choice will glean the best outcomes.

Introverted Feeling (Fi):

Fi Dominant Types: INFP, ISFP
Secondary Fi Users: ENFP, ESFP

How to spot them:

- Fi users tend to use emotion-laden vocabulary (I.e. Preferring the phrase, “I feel like…” over “I think that…”).

- Fi dominant types tend to ‘zone out’ or daydream more than any other type – they may even do this in the middle of a conversation.

- They are incredibly patient listeners who are happy to let you talk for as long as you need to, without jumping in to offer solutions.

- These types connect and show empathy by exposing their own experiences and struggles as a means of letting you know you’re not alone.

- Fi users are the easiest types to offend, particularly if you question an aspect of their identity or betray one of their morals.

- They will almost always argue from a subjective or emotional standpoint – often using the way they feel as an argument in and of itself.

- These types make other people feel comfortable by exhibiting an inclusive, non-judgmental attitude toward them.

- These types usually advocate for staying true to oneself, following your heart and doing what you know to be right.

Extroverted Feeling (Fe):

Fe Dominant Types: ENFJ, ESFJ
Secondary Fe Users: INFJ, ISFJ

How to spot them:

- Dominant Fe users talk almost exclusively about what other people are doing or thinking.

- They are proactive in adhering to the needs of others (I.e. Ensuring there is food ready for houseguests before they show up, just in case they are hungry upon arrival).

- They tend to be warm and welcoming toward new people.

- They use confirming language when speaking with others, I.e. uttering “Oh no,” Or “Aw,” while someone else is speaking, to show empathy.

- These types make other people feel comfortable by anticipating their needs and adhering to social niceties.

- Immature or unhealthy Fe users are the harshest (and most vocal) judges of others.

- The moods of Fe users are particularly dependent on the moods of those around them – I.e. They will visibly and genuinely cheer up after hearing someone else’s good news.

- These types advocate for keeping the peace, considering other’s points of view and accommodating loved ones.

Here’s Who Probably Has A Crush On You Based On Your Myers-Briggs Personality Type

ENFP

Who’s crushing on you: The quiet, nerdy one.

They’re focused, composed and together. You’re scattered, enthusiastic and charming. At a first glance it might not be a match made in heaven but something about your quick wit and fearless charisma keeps drawing them back to you. Try giving this combination a shot – you may be surprised to find that their intensity and firmness balances you out in all the right ways.

INTJ

Who’s crushing on you: The emotionally intense one.

They’re introspective, analytical and artistic. You’re intense, intellectual and emotionally guarded. You may see them as overly whimsical but they see you as a challenge. This emotionally intelligent type wants to break down your walls and understand what’s beneath your cool, rational exterior. Though the thought of this may send alarm bells screeching through your mind, don’t be so quick to write them off. They may prove themselves imperative to helping you unlock parts of yourself you never knew existed –and you may just grow immeasurably from it.

ENTJ

Who’s crushing on you: The scatterbrained genius.

They’re analytical, entrepreneurial and just a little out of touch with the world that surrounds them. You’re practical, put-together and high achieving. Though you never pictured yourself with someone so scattered, this mismatched prodigy may just be the yin to your yang. They’re enticed by your no-nonsense, put-together attitude. And if you gave them the time of day, you’d quickly learn that they have the brains to fuel it all. Together you could be the perfect team – but you’re going to have to make the first move. They keep forgetting to.

ENTP

Who’s crushing on you: The softhearted brainiac.

They’re sharp, put-together and secretly harbouring a bleeding heart. You’re dynamic, quick-witted and tirelessly analytical. You may not have noticed them watching you, but they’ve been analyzing your every move for months now. This highly introspective type has you figured out in ways that you don’t even have you figured out – and discovering this will be a shock to your system. Something about the fierce precision this type possesses will endlessly compel you. You’ll want to break their walls down to understand exactly how they tick – except their walls don’t come down easily. Both of you love a good puzzle, and figuring each other out may just be one of the most passionate endeavours you ever undertake.

ENFJ

Who’s crushing on you: The artistic one.

They’re creative, individualistic and a little bit head-in-the-clouds. You’re warm, put-together and nurturing. They’re taking their time to approach you, to the point where you may not even have noticed that they’re crushing. But this highly introspective type is drawn to your organized, empathetic nature. Even if you haven’t spoken yet, chances are they have a painting, poem or song that they composed with you in mind. You inspire them and they could do the same for you. Just give them some time to move in closer – their emotional depth will intoxicate and challenge you.

ESTJ

Who’s crushing on you: The sensible, selfless one.

They’re sensible, selfless and sweet. You’re motivated, driven and dominant. They admire the no-nonsense attitude you bring to the table and suspect that somewhere below your tough exterior, you’re hiding a heart. This compassionate yet self-motivated type may be exactly what you need – their dedication balances your drive and they bring out the soft side in you. But don’t worry – they won’t tell anyone else that you have one.

INFJ

Who’s crushing on you: The intellectual badass.

They’re intense, unconventional and into pushing boundaries. You’re composed, introspective and guarded. This type is simultaneously your worst nightmare and your dream come true. They won’t be shy in approaching you and trying to get down to the bottom of what makes you tick. They’re natural puzzle-solvers and your eloquent composure is one giant question mark to them. They want to break down your walls and show you a whole new world – one that may just be thrilling in all the right ways, if you let it be.

ISFP

Who’s crushing on you: The nurturing friend.

They’re kind, collected and community-minded. You’re artistic, adventurous and full of heart. You may only think of them as a friend – the one who’s always happy to pick you up after a long night out or relish your latest piece of art. But they’ve been secretly marveling over your artistic nature and thoughtful presence for a while now. They want to get to know you better – they simply aren’t sure if you feel the same way. Drop them a hint if you do – you two may just balance each other out in all the right ways.

ESTP

Who’s crushing on you: The sweet one.

They’re unassuming, nurturing and selfless. You’re outgoing, adventurous and capable. You may not have noticed them admiring you from the sidelines but once you do, you’ll have no idea how you ever missed them. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by their sweetness and genuineness. This nurturing type sincerely wants what’s best for you and in exchange they ask only that you light up their life with your haphazard charm. They’ll be your soft place to fall if you’ll be their superhero – together, the two of you could make a dream team.

ISTJ

Who’s crushing on you: The party animal.

They’re impulsive, outgoing and excitable. You’re steady, reliable and strong. Nobody would ever put the two of you together, but they’ve been secretly admiring you from the spotlight. This scattered type respects your firm resolve and feels surprisingly balanced out by you. Chances are they’ll be moving in on you any day now – they just aren’t 100% sure if you feel the same way. It’s time to give them something to go on if you do.

ISFJ

Who’s crushing on you: The superhero.

They’re outgoing, confident and capable. You’re compassionate, reliable and organized. No matter how much of a show they put on in front of others, something about you has them weak in the knees. This straight-shooting type is comfortable with going for what they want, but they’ve been secretly longing for someone to come home to. And you’re the exact type of person they have in mind.

INFP

Who’s crushing on you: The together one.

They’re organized, capable and kind. You’re intense, analytical and a wee bit out of touch with the world that surrounds you. And something about your accidental aloofness is insanely attractive to them. This kind, nurturing type has been admiring you for the depth and authenticity you bring to every task you undertake. They know that with your vision and their practical skills, the two of you could make a dream team. Now if you’d only stop pursuing all those other tortured artists for long enough to notice them…

ISTP

Who’s crushing on you: The whimsical one.

They’re sensual, spiritual and adventurous. You’re laid-back, logical and grounded. Something about your capable nature is endlessly attractive to their fanciful one – and they want to get to know you better. The good news is, you already run in the same crowds. You’ll notice them getting a little bit closer each time you hang out –and don’t be quick to write them off. If you do eventually get together, they might just provide the exact mix of sensuality and camaraderie that you’ve been looking for.

They’re witty, outgoing and goofy. You’re logical, introspective and aloof. Something about your standoffish nature presents itself as a challenge to this gregarious type –they want to find out what’s under your shell. It may not be a match made in heaven, but it’s worth giving a shot. You share a love for the unconventional and that might just include each other.

ESFJ

Who’s crushing on you: The scattered romantic.

They’re whimsical, artistic and idealistic. You’re warm, generous and together. Your compassionate yet put-together persona is attractive to their bleeding heart. With your practicality and their romanticism, the two of you could make a dream team. But you might have to make the first move – they’re too busy expressing their affection in their artwork to actually let you know they’re interested in you.

ESFP

Who’s crushing on you: The strong, silent one.

They’re resilient, reliable and steadfast. You’re gregarious, excitable and free-spirited. Ask An INFP: How Do You Manage Your Emotional Intensity?

Q: How do you manage the intensity of your emotional highs and lows? Is feeling everything so deeply a blessing or a curse?

INFP: It’s both. It feels meaningful (and like I won’t have any regrets) because of this, but it would definitely be nice to be more chill sometimes.

Q: How about stressful situations? How do you handle those as an INFP?

INFP: I’m worried I’m not going to sound like an INFP when I answer this, but I’ve been very proactive about reducing stress and anxiety in my life so my answer might be different than others.

In stressful situations I focus on outcomes — what has to happen immediately so that we can get through what is happening right now? I try to stay detached until the dust settles and I can decompress alone and work through the emotions of what happened (and sometimes, why I even felt stressed in the first place).

One way I stay away from stress and anxiety is by embracing minimalism. By not having extra physical clutter, I remind myself not to have extra emotional and relationship clutter. I stay away from things, people, situations that are needlessly stressful and I make sure my home environment is calming. I also have calming practices built into my life: spending time around water, burning candles and herbs at night, yoga, meditation, quiet time alone without distraction.

Q: How do you develop assertiveness and learn to set boundaries as an INFP?

INFP: INFPs suck at confrontation and I am the poster child for this. But I think, life experience helps. When you get taken advantage of or just burned out because you are giving more than you are getting you come to a place where you’re like “I’m not going to let this happen again.”

It really helps to picture the advice you’d give to your best friend. You would never tell your BFF she was selfish for wanting to get rid of a toxic friend or end a relationship or leave a job that didn’t serve her. You aren’t selfish for wanting a good life either.

Q: As idealists, INFPs often hold the people in their lives to very high standards. How do you overcome this inclination, and how do you deal with the let-down when others fail to live up to those standards?

INFP: This is so true, and so hard to overcome! One of my bigger faults is definitely holding people to my fantasy expectations, not communicating these expectations to them, and then being sad when they (inevitably) don’t live up to them.

I remind myself that people aren’t mind-readers so I actually have to communicate, out loud, with them before I can be upset. I also find doing Thought Records really helpful because it gives me a lot of perspective and usually helps me see how unrealistic I’m being. And I feel the weight of my expectations being released.

Q: INFPs can be notoriously hard to read – how do we break down the walls and get to really know you?

INFP: I get reserved and withdraw when I feel almost any emotion, especially around people I’m not comfortable with. But that’s a reaction, not necessarily the action I want to take, so I’m always willing to work around it and be more communicative. The best way is to ask. I love sharing how I feel and making everything in our relationship copacetic.

Q: Which types do you find yourself to be most compatible with when it comes to romantic relationships?

INFP: To me, there’s nothing as intoxicating as an INTJ. I feel like we have the same levels of intensity, but we’re different enough about it that it’s very fun to be together. My best friend is an ENFJ and we have an amazing friendship.

I don’t think I could ever date outside the N because I wouldn’t feel understood.

Q: INFPs are known as the ‘healers’ of the Myers-Briggs world – but when you’re struggling, how do you heal and take care of yourself as an INFP?

INFP: One of the biggest things was just realizing that self-care needs to be a priority – am I living a life where I’m putting my own oxygen mask on first? Or am I exhausting myself by putting other people’s needs ahead of my own?

I do a lot of different things to get calm when things are crazy: being in nature, talking with a friend, swimming (your phone can’t come with you!), or just relaxing in my home with dim lighting and good music and earthy candles. If you want to help an INFP relax or heal from a stressful event know that the best thing you can do is just offer quality time alone with them. A night where we make a delicious comfort meal and eat it with wine and candles is way better than sending flowers!

Q: What career path(s) do you recommend for an INFP? Which kind of work do you personally find to be the most fulfilling?

INFP: You know, most people will tell an INFP to be a social worker or be in some kind of caring profession. That did not work for me at all, and I’d tell people to think very seriously about the kind of life they want before entering one of these fields.

I felt burned out all the time because I was giving away all my energy and getting nothing back. Caretaking workplaces are usually pretty messed up in too many ways to dissect here. I didn’t make any money since those professions are low-paying so when I got done with my work day stress I had personal life stress because my budget was always very tight. In the end, that is a recipe for having an uphill battle, indefinitely. I became really protective of my health and happiness because I realized I didn’t want that.

To me, it’s much saner to use my creative and healing energy to help people in a way I control and that allows me to be healthy. I worked in marketing for awhile and I loved it. If I wasn’t writing I would be copywriting or doing that probably.

Q: Do you have any good book suggestions?

INFP: Yes! I just read one of the best books of my life, Recovery 2.0. It comes from a framework of 12-step programs which might be alienating for some people, but it’s explained to me why I feel so bad when I do things no one else in mental health or positive psychology talks about — like procrastinating or lying or binge-reading shitty books (I read the Divergent series in one weekend and couldn’t figure out why I felt gross about it) — all those things are symptoms of attempting to avoid anxiety instead of dealing with it.

Other books I think INFPs would enjoy: Holy the Firm and Teaching a Stone to Talk by Annie Dillard, Franny & Zooey by JD Salinger, and The Moth Diaries by Rachel Klein.

Q: If there were only one thing that the world could know about an INFP, what would that one thing be?

INFP: We want the best thing to happen for everyone. Even when we’re being passive aggressive it’s because we’re coming from this place of not wanting to hurt someone. So any beef you ever have with one can be solved with an open conversation.

What Each Myers-Briggs Type Does In A Rut (The Rise Of The Inferior Function)

ENFP

Cognitive Functions: Extroverted Intuition – Introverted Feeling – Extroverted Thinking – Introverted Sensing

How the rut develops
: When sensing that a problem is developing, the ENFP’s first reaction will be to exercise their extroverted intuition. They will examine all the opportunities that are available to them and may become enthused about many at once. They will likely try many new ideas out or begin multiple new projects in hopes that one of them will stick. If this does not save them from their negative spiral, the ENFP will incorporate their introverted feeling more actively. At this point, they may withdraw from others and spend an exhaustive amount of time analyzing their own emotions and trying to sort through what they are feeling at their core. If this too does not help them, the ENFP will take to their extroverted thinking – by this point they will understand that they are under a significant amount of stress and will try to impose as much order as possible into their lives in order to get themselves back on track with where they’d like to be. If this too fails, the ENFP may fall prey to their inferior function.

What the rut looks like: An ENFP in a bad state of mind reverts to their introverted sensing. This usually bubbly type becomes guarded, defensive and routine-oriented. They shut out others and fail to entertain new ideas. They will appear to have lost their usual ‘sparkle’ and their cynicism about the future will diminish their usual sense of optimism.

How to get out of it: To break out of a rut, the ENFP needs to get back in touch with their extroverted intuiton. They predominantly need something to get excited about – a unique opportunity for the future or a new adventure to take on. They need to remember that the world is still varied and wide – that they will not be stuck where they are forever and that there are still infinite opportunities for them to explore.

What their return to health will look like: As their mindset improves, the ENFP will become steadily more social – picking back up with their social circle and feeding off the ideas of those around them. They will begin exploring new opportunities in their immediate environment as well as for the long-term. They may leave a bad job or relationship that has been making them feel stuck and take on new projects to distance themselves from the past. In time, they will return to their bubbly, idea-oriented selves.

INFP

Cognitive Functions: Introverted Feeling – Extroverted Intuition – Introverted Sensing – Extroverted Thinking

How the rut develops:
When they first sense a problem developing, the INFP will withdraw and attempt to sort through their feelings about the situation. They may spend a larger than normal amount of time alone as they work through which of their ideals and morals can help them sort through the situation. If they cannot make sense of their feelings, the INFP will incorporate more of their extroverted intuition into the mix. In this phase, they will try to brainstorm as many ideas as possible that might help pull them out of their negative headspace. If this also does not help, the INFP may default to their introverted sensing. In this phase, they will turn to tried-and-true methods of pulling themselves together – they will understand that they are under stress, so they will consider what has helped them in the past and will turn to old coping mechanisms. If even this fails to help, the INFP may fall prey to their inferior function.

What the rut looks like: An INFP in a rut reverts to their extroverted thinking. This normally creative individual will become fixated on making the most logical choices available and will lose their creative edge. They will convince themselves that they are nobody special and therefore should not pursue a life of passion. They may get stuck at a job or in a relationship that suppresses their creativity and prevents them from adhering to their personal values.

How to get out of it: To break out of a rut, the INFP needs to get back in touch with their introverted feeling. They need validation – whether interpersonal or individual – that their creative side is both appreciated and admired. They need to surround themselves with people who understand them and pursue a field of work or study that lines up with their personal values. Above all else, the INFP needs to feel as though they’re getting back in touch with the most authentic version of themselves.

What their return to health will look like: As their mindset improves, the INFP will become more and more interested in creative pursuits. Their self-confidence will grow and they will steadily give themselves additional license to pursue what they are interested in and passionate about. They will no longer feel the need to defend their choices based on practicality – they will feel confident that they are living in line with their values and that will be what matters to them most.

ENFJ

Cognitive Functions: Extroverted Feeling – Introverted Intuition – Extroverted Sensing – Introverted Thinking

How the rut develops:
When sensing that a problem is developing, the ENFJ will first attempt to find a solution that achieves the best possible outcome for everyone involved. They will survey how their loved ones are feeling and attempt to make a decision that best suits the desires of the majority. If they are unable to do so, the ENFJ will turn a heavier focus to their introverted intuition. They will independently examine the options that are available to them and theorize which ones would provide the best future outcome for all those involved. If this method fails to help them, the ENFJ will turn to their extroverted sensing. Knowing they are under stress, they may use a trial-and-error method of problem solving. They will try out various solutions in hopes that one will take. If this, too, fails them, the ENFJ is at risk of falling prey to their inferior function.

What the rut looks like: An ENFJ in a rut reverts to their introverted thinking. Usually empathetic and decisive, the ENFJ will become cold and overly analytical – they take a detached view of those around them and may make harsh judgments under the guise of ‘just being honest.’ This normally understanding type become pessimistic about themselves and those around them – criticizing others without warrant and refusing to show their loved ones the compassion that usually defines their very personality.

How to get out of it: To break out of a rut, the ENFJ needs to get back in touch with their extroverted feeling. They need to reconnect with loved ones and recognize their place within society. Their introverted intuition may help them in their return to health – by setting plans for the future, the ENFJ can re-establish their purpose and reconnect with others as they work toward meaningful goals.

What their return to health will look like: As their mindset improves, the ENFJ will spend more and more time around others – they will rekindle their old connections and regain their sense of responsibility. Their decisive, encouraging nature will take over and they will return to making detailed plans for the future, which ensure that those around them are happy and thriving.

INFJ

Cognitive Functions: Introverted Intuition – Extroverted Feeling – Introverted Thinking – Extroverted Sensing

How the rut develops:
When sensing that a problem is developing, the INFJ will first revert to their introverted intuition in an attempt to find the best possible solution to whatever stressor they are facing. They will attempt to visualize how each possible course of action will play out in the future and which one would best suit the interests of themselves and their loved ones. If they cannot reach a decision this way, the INFJ may shift their emphasis to the experiences of others. They will attempt to gain a feel for how the situation is impacting those around them and aim to reach a decision that will make everyone around them the happiest. If this, too, does not help the INFJ find the solution they need, they may turn to their introverted thinking. At this point they will understand that they are under stress and may detach from others in an attempt to examine the objective truths that are available to them regarding the situation they’re facing. They will examine the situation from all possible angles and try to collect as many facts as possible that will help them decide on a course of action. If even this does not help the INFJ sort through their issue, they are at risk of falling prey to their inferior function.

What the rut looks like: An INFJ in a rut will revert to their extroverted sensing. They may lose their focus on the big picture and become obsessed with the insignificant details of whatever they’re working on. They will refrain from making important long-term decisions and may withdraw from loved ones – denying them the empathy and care that the INFJ is usually happy to provide. The INFJ may also give into unhealthy sensory indulgencies while stuck in a rut – they may eat or drink to excess and fail to take care of their long-term physical needs.

How to get out of it: To break out of a rut, the INFJ needs to reconnect with their introverted intuition. They need to regain confidence in their ability to make precise decisions for the future that will positively serve both themselves and their loved ones. The INFJ may need to speak with someone who knows them well in order to activate their extroverted feeling and reconnect with their overarching core values. Above all else, the INFJ needs to feel competent in their ability to make plans for the future that reflect and support these values.

What their return to health will look like: As the INFJ’s mindset improves, they will become steadily more confident in their decision-making abilities. They will shift their focus from the present to the future and will take specific steps to ensure that they are pursuing goals that reflect their long-term ideals. The INFJ will regain their sense of empathy and connection with others as their health improves and their internal locus of control shifts back into place.

ESFP

Cognitive Functions: Extroverted Sensing – Introverted Feeling – Extroverted Thinking – Introverted Intuition

How the rut develops:
When a problem first develops, the ESFP will become highly reliant on their extroverted sensing. Depending on the perceived severity of the problem, they will either attempt to solve it directly or they will distract themselves through sensory input and social interaction. If neither of these helps the ESFP deal with the issue, they will shift their focus to their introverted feeling. At this point they may withdraw from others and attempt to work through how they’re feeling independently. If they are unable to work through their feelings in a productive way, the ESFP will then turn to their extroverted thinking. At this point they will understand that they are under stress and will try to impose as much order as possible into their lives in an attempt to stop themselves from spiralling any further. If this, too, fails them, the ESFP is at risk of falling prey to their inferior function.

What the rut looks like: An ESFP in a rut will revert to their introverted intuition. This normally happy-go-lucky type will turn their vision to the future and may get lost imagining negative courses of action that could develop. They may become crippled by self-doubt and adopt a cynical viewpoint toward others. This normally warm and enthusiastic type is apt to developing a ‘short fuse’ while operating from their inferior function and may lash out at others – imagining a sinister ‘hidden meaning’ behind everything others say and do.

How to get out of it: To break out of a rut, the ESFP needs to engage their extroverted sensing. They will need a new situation, adventure or group of people to help them remember that they think best on their feet, when directly engaged with the world around them. This type requires a great deal of external stimulation to feel healthy and happy – they are the most themselves when they are constantly engaged with new people and projects.

What their return to health will look like: As their mindset improves, the ESFP will shift from over analysis to direct engagement with their external environment. They will regain their usual warmth and enthusiasm for the world around them – they will be eager to respond to invitations and opportunities. They will take a keen interest in the people around them and feel confident in themselves and others once again.

ESFJ

Cognitive Functions: Extroverted Feeling – Introverted Sensing – Extroverted Intuition – Introverted Feeling

How the rut develops:
When sensing that a problem is developing, the ESFJ will first attempt to enforce whichever course of action will make the people in their lives the happiest. They will pick up on how others are feeling and attempt to impose some sort of order that works best for everyone. If this method fails them, the ESFJ will place more emphasis on their introverted sensing. They will examine which courses of action have worked best in the past, and attempt to apply a tried-and-true method from their past to the current situation. If their introverted sensing is unable to resolve the issue, the ESFJ will then move to their extroverted intuition. They will brainstorm any and all ideas that may help them out of their rut, and may ask others for their input on those ideas. At this point the ESFJ will know that they are under stress and may feel desperate for any idea that may work. If they fail to produce one, the ESFJ is at risk of falling prey to their inferior function.

What the rut looks like: An ESFJ in a rut reverts to their introverted thinking. This normally warm and practical type will become cynical and overly analytical. They may search for ‘objective truths’ about others, which are presented as harsh judgments. They may lash out as others, criticizing them for what they’re doing wrong and highlighting their negative traits. They may abandon their responsibilities and fail to live up to the commitments they’ve made – traits that are quite out of character for this highly devoted type.

How to get out of it: To break out of a rut, the ESFJ needs to reconnect with their extroverted feeling. They need to regain a sense of purpose in relation to their loved ones and society as a whole. The ESFJ thrives on feeling important to and valued by others, which they must achieve in some form if they are to make a full return to health. Connecting with loved ones who are willing to listen to and talk with the ESFJ will be crucial for pulling them out of a rut. This type needs to know that they are heard and appreciated by the people closest to them.

What their return to health will look like: As their mindset improves, the ESFJ will regain a sense of openness and connection with those around them. They will reconnect with the roles they once abandoned – as a partner or parent or professional. They will recognize the impact they can have on those around them and strive to serve their loved ones as fully as possible. The ESFJ will eventually regain a sense of value and usefulness and will renew the connections they have with those they love most.

ISFJ

Cognitive Functions: Introverted Sensing – Extroverted Feeling – Introverted Thinking – Extroverted Intuition

While falling into a rut:
When sensing that a problem is developing, the ISFJ first attempts to sift through their past experiences and find one that applies to the situation at hand. If they are unable to apply a pre-conceived method of dealing with the problem, they may shift the emphasis to their extroverted feeling. In this phase, the ISFJ will speak with loved ones and attempt to come up with a solution that best serves everyone. They will aim to serve the good of the group in any decision they come to. If they are still unable to come up with a solution, the ISFJ will then turn to their introverted thinking. They may withdraw from others as they attempt to analyze the situation from all possible angles and understand the objective truths involved. If they are still unsure of how to deal with a particular situation, the ISFJ is at risk of falling prey to their inferior function.

What the rut looks like: An ISFJ in a rut reverts to extroverted intuition. This normally organized and dedicated type begins doubting themselves immensely and second guessing decisions they’ve made in the past. They may begin and then quickly abandon multiple new endeavors; unable to commit to any of them for fear that they have chosen incorrectly. They will distance themselves from loved ones, feeling unable to live up to the commitments they’ve made and will attempt to ‘go it alone’ in every aspect of their lives.

How to get out of it: To break out of a rut, the ISFJ must reconnect with their introverted sensing. They need to take the time to integrate past experiences into their present mindset in a positive way. The ISFJ needs to find a way to feel as though they’re positively contributing to the people and community around them – finding a method of doing so will likely be a crucial component of pulling themselves out of the rut.

What their return to health will look like: As their mindset improves, the ISFJ will regain a sense of meaningful duty to those around them. They will return to following through on commitments and making long-term plans. They will feel capable of integrating past experiences into their present and future lives and will trust themselves to support their loved ones and uphold their commitments.

ISFP

Cognitive Functions: Introverted Feeling – Extroverted Sensing – Introverted Intuition – Extroverted Thinking

How the rut develops:
When sensing that a problem is developing, the ISFP will first attempt to deal with the situation internally – by taking time away from others to decide how they feel about it and where they stand morally. If they cannot reach a conclusion internally, the ISFP may take a trial-and-error approach to problem solving. They will attempt various methods of restoring the peace, even if it is at their own expense. Depending on the severity of the problem, the ISFP may also attempt to distract themselves at this point, through social interaction or new sensory input. If they are unable to resolve or dismiss the problem, the ISFP will then turn to their introverted intuition. They will once again withdraw from others – aiming to examine the future implications of their predicament and determine the best possible outcome. If they are unable to synthesize a solution at this point, the ISFP is at risk of falling prey to their inferior function.

What the rut looks like: An ISFP in a rut reverts to extroverted thinking. This normally artistic and fun-loving type will become fixated on making the most logical choices for their future, without reference to what they actually want or feel passionate about. They will regulate their lives in an impersonal way, failing to make time for the people or passions that usually rule their world. They may resort to intense self-criticism and convince themselves that they’ll never make anything out of their life or their art form and must therefore make choices in the most pragmatic way possible.

How to get out of it: To break out of a rut, the ISFP must reconnect with their introverted feeling. They need to regain their sense of individualism and artistic creativity. Their extroverted sensing may come into play in bringing out this part of them – engaging their senses and interacting with others will fuel their artistic side. To break out of their rut, the ISFP needs to re-connect with the most authentic version of who they are and trust that they can make decisions based on that part of themselves.

What their return to health will look like: As their mindset improves, the ISFP will become steadily more creative and devote more and more time to what they are passionate about. They will regain their sense of spontaneity and begin saying ‘yes’ to life again. This highly sensitive type will once again trust that their artistic interpretation of the world matters and will stand behind it even when others are critical.

ESTP

Cognitive Functions: Extroverted Sensing – Introverted Thinking – Extroverted Feeling – Introverted Intuition

How the rut develops:
When sensing that a problem is developing, the ESTP will go into ‘action’ mode – attempting to deal with the problem as directly as possible, in whichever fashion is most readily available to them. If the ESTP is unable to reach a solution through action, they will turn to their introverted thinking to reflect on the situation. They will look at all the facts that are relevant to the problem and attempt to pinpoint the inconsistency that is causing things to go wrong. If they are unable to do so, the ESTP’s stress will increase. They may then turn to their extroverted feeling – asking others for input and analyzing the issue as it pertains to the other people who are affected by it. If the ESTP is still at a loss for how to resolve the developing problem at this phase, they are at risk of falling prey to their inferior function.

What the rut looks like: An ESTP in a rut will revert to introverted intuition. This normally straightforward type will become obsessed with planning for the future and will want to examine all possible scenarios that might unfold before they feel confident making a decision. They may place a higher emphasis than usual on how their actions will impact others and will be hesitant to make any move for fear that they may inflict a negative series of events. This type will lose their usual confidence and charm and will take on an intensity that is out of character for them.

How to get out of it: To break out of a rut, the ESTP must re-engage their extroverted sensing. This present-focused type operates best while thinking on their feet and requires a great deal of external stimuli to keep them happy and thriving. To return to health, the ESTP will require new projects or engagements that will pull them out of their head and re-affirm their ability to deal with life’s challenges as they arise.

What their return to health will look like: As their mindset improves, the ESTP will become steadily more engaged with the people and world around them. They will cease to plan excessively for the future and will return to dealing with problems directly, as they come up. This straightforward type will regain confidence in their ability to take life as it comes and their confidence will steadily improve as they open their world back up to new people and new situations.

ISTP

Cognitive Functions: Introverted Thinking – Extroverted Sensing – Introverted Intuition – Extroverted Feeling

How the rut develops:
When sensing that a problem is developing, the ISTP will first withdraw to examine the objective facts as they pertain to the issue at hand. They will attempt to spot any inconsistencies that may have led to the development of the problem and will strive to resolve them directly. If this method fails them, the ISTP may place a heavier focus on their extroverted sensing – switching to trail-and-error as their primary method of problem-solving. If this still does not pull them from the rut, the ISTP will turn to their tertiary function introverted intuition. They will examine the long-term outcomes of the developing problem and attempt to find a way to shift direction before the problem incurs long-term negative consequences. If the ISTP is still spiralling at this point, they run the risk of falling pretty to their inferior function.

What the rut looks like: An ISTP in a rut will revert to their extroverted feeling. This normally logical type will become defensive and reactive – refusing to acknowledge that they cannot find their way out of the rut and clinging to faulty logic in order to support their unstable self-image. The ISTP’s introverted intuition may interact with their unhealthy extroverted feeling in a way that makes them anticipate negative future events for themselves and their loved ones in this state. They may become uncharacteristically anxious and hostile.

How to get out of it: To break out of a rut, the ISTP needs to re-engage their introverted thinking. This type thrives on understanding how the world around them works and they require a great deal of alone time to break things down in an objective fashion. To move out of a rut, this type needs to re-engage their interest with the world around them and lessen their focus on how others view them. The ISTP thrives on acquiring hands-on skills and putting them to practical work – doing so will give the ISTP a sense of purpose and help them return to health.

What their return to health will look like: As their mindset improves, the ISTP will begin placing less emphasis on what those around them think and will regain an interest in understanding the world around them as objectively as possible. They will continue to develop their practical skills and will feel confident in their ability to judge situations logically and evenly.

ESTJ

Cognitive Functions: Extroverted Thinking – Introverted Sensing – Extroverted Intuition – Introverted Feeling

How the rut develops:
When they sense a problem developing, the ESTJ’s first reaction will be to find a practical solution and apply it immediately. They will attempt to re-impose order to their external environment as soon as it has been disrupted. If they are unable to do so, they may shift the focus to their introverted sensing. Rather than dealing with what is directly apparent, they will think of what has helped them solve a similar issue in the past and attempt to apply the same method to the problem at hand. If this approach also fails them, the ESTJ may turn to their tertiary extroverted intuition. They will brainstorm new ideas for resolving the issue and attempt to catapult themselves out of the rut using a previously untested method. If the ESTJ is still spiralling at this phase, they are at risk of falling prey to their inferior function.

What the rut looks like: An ESTJ in a rut will revert to their introverted feeling. This normally pragmatic type will become self-critical and overly analytical – trying to find the deeper meaning behind everything they and others do. They may become fixated on morals – judging others for what they are doing wrong and vocalizing their opinion on it. While in the grip of their introverted feeling, the ESTJ will lose the ability to make objective, pragmatic decisions. Their behaviour will be rash and defensive and they may withdraw from others in an attempt to hide the fact that they are not behaving entirely rationally.

How to get out of it: To break out of a rut, the ESTJ needs to reconnect with their extroverted thinking. They need to regain confidence in their ability to impose order on their external environment and make pragmatic choices for both themselves and those around them. They may use their introverted sensing to help them remember what they have valued in the past, and make decisions based on the most logical implementation of those values.

What their return to health will look like: As their mindset improves, the ESTJ will regain their natural confidence and decisiveness. They will once again work toward imposing order into their lives and will take on positions of leadership as they become available. This highly organized type thrives when they are given autonomy to make practical decisions – seeking out those situations will likely be crucial to their return to confidence and health.

ISTJ

Cognitive Functions: Introverted Sensing – Extroverted Thinking – Introverted Feeling – Extroverted Intuition

How the rut develops:
When they sense a problem developing, the ISTJ’s first instinct will be to apply a tried-and-true solution to the problem – they will want to nip the problem in the bud and solve it as quickly as possible. If the tried-and-true method fails them, however, the ISTJ will instead turn their attention to their extroverted thinking. They will survey their external environment for a way to impose order and reduce the chaos that the problem has incurred. They will attempt to control any damage that has been done in a straightforward manner – they may enlist the help of others at this phase if necessary. If the ISTJ finds that the problem is continuing to develop, they will turn to their tertiary introverted feeling. They will assess how they might reach a solution that is in line with their strongly held moral beliefs. If this also fails to help them resolve the issue, the ISTJ is at risk of falling prey to their inferior function.

What the rut looks like: An ISTJ in a rut will revert to their extroverted intuition. This normally logical type will become caught up in a world of negative possibilities and may neglect their capacity for pragmatic decision-making. They will uncharacteristically distrust the tried and true methods they have used in the past and feel incapable of tackling new problems. They may feel overwhelmed by the commitments they have made and cease to follow through on many of them. The normally reliable ISTJ will become scattered, defensive and ungrounded in their ability to implement plans.

How to get out of it: To break out of a rut, the ISTJ must get back in touch with their introverted sensing. This type places a high value on structure, integrity and duty – all of which they must reconnect with in order to return to health. An ISTJ who has lost their way is likely an ISTJ who feels useless. To return to health, they will need to re-establish their place in society and understand how their knowledge base and past experiences can help them to make an effective contribution to the world around them.

What their return to health will look like: As their mindset improves, the ISTJ will cease to dwell in theoretical possibilities and will begin implementing realistic, tangible plans that will serve both themselves and the institutions they value. They will regain confidence in the knowledge they have acquired through past experiences and feel capable of implementing plans accordingly. They will once again feel useful to their community and will dutifully follow through on the promises and plans they make.

ENTJ

Cognitive Functions: Extroverted Thinking – Introverted Intuition – Extroverted Sensing – Introverted Feeling

How the rut develops:
When they first sense a problem developing, the ENTJ will turn to their extroverted thinking for guidance. They will seek out a tangible solution that facilitates order in their external environment and they will immediately attempt to implement it. If this does not work for them, the ENTJ will place a heavier focus on their introverted intuition. They will withdraw from others and examine various possible courses of action in an attempt to determine the most efficient solution. If they are unable to come up with an effective solution at this phase, the ENTJ will turn to their extroverted sensing. Aware that they are under stress, the ENTJ may hone in on the specific details relevant to the situation and attempt to find some ‘clue’ in their external environment that they might have missed. If they are still unable to resolve the unfavourable situation at this point, the ENTJ is at risk of falling prey to their inferior function.

What the rut looks like: An ENTJ in a rut will revert to their introverted feeling. This highly logical and thoroughly analytical type will suddenly become indecisive and defensive in the face of important decisions. They may become caught up in analyzing right from wrong and mulling over what ought to be done, while failing to act on their conclusions. This type is likely to feel deeply misunderstood while in a rut and may lash out at others when questioned – implying that nobody else could possibly understand what they are thinking. They will not want to let on that they are being affected on an emotional level and will likely withdraw from others while in the grip of introverted feeling.

How to get out of it: To break out of a rut, the ENTJ must reconnect with their extroverted thinking. This type thrives on productivity and efficiency, which are two factors that fail them when they regress into an unhealthy state. To break out of their negative spiral, the ENTJ has to reconnect with the vision they have for the future and find tangible ways of working toward it. The ENTJ needs to competent in their ability to lead others and achieve goals – once they regain their sense of self-efficacy, they will begin to feel like themselves again.

What their return to health will look like: As their mindset improves, the ENTJ will begin implementing tangible plans for the future and imposing order on their external environment. They may begin a new project or find a new job that allows them to pursue their visions of the future as effectively as possible. They will move naturally back into positions of leadership and will once again feel confident in their ability to guide others toward the best possible outcome.

ENTP

Cognitive Functions: Extroverted Intuition – Introverted Thinking – Extroverted Feeling – Introverted Sensing

How the rut develops:
When they first sense a problem developing, the ENTP will rely predominantly on their extroverted intuition. Their first instinct will be to generate as many ideas as possible that will either solve the problem they’re facing or adequately distract them from it. They are likely to attempt many different solutions during this phase, or take on multiple new projects. If they are unable to use their extroverted intuition to work through their struggle, the ENTP will then turn to their introverted thinking. They will begin spending more time alone as they attempt to break down the problem by examining each part of it objectively and attempting to pinpoint any inconsistencies. If they are unable to make sense of it at this stage, the ENTP will turn to their extroverted feeling. At this point they will be aware of the fact that they’re under stress and may turn to those around them to get a feel for what their take on the situation is. At this point, the ENTP may take the opinions of others into account far more than usual as a last-ditch attempt to resolve the situation. If they are unable to do so, the ENTP runs the risk of falling prey to their inferior function.

What the rut looks like: An ENTP in a rut will revert to using introverted sensing. This normally dynamic type will become cautious and practical, defaulting to the safest choice in every situation and requiring more validation than usual from those around them. Deviating from their norm of seeing multiple sides to every issue, the ENTP will stick closely with what they know for sure and will seem to lose their deviant edge. They may perceive an overwhelming amount of negative possibilities for the future and be scared away from pursuing new ideas as a result.

How to get out of it: To pull themselves out of a rut, the ENTP will need to re-engage their extroverted intuition. This type thrives on stimulating their inventive side – they will benefit immensely from brainstorming and debating new ideas with a fellow intuitive-dominant type. Taking on new projects and developing new goals will be crucial for the ENTP’s return to health – they need to feel capable of creating new prospects for themselves and remembering that they are not stuck where they are indefinitely.

What their return to health will look like: As their mindset improves, the ENTP will veer away from traditional methods of accomplishing their goals and will return to brainstorming unconventional methods of getting things done. They will react best to people who offer them an intellectual challenge and will gain energy through debating and entertaining new ideas that they are presented with. As they emerge from their rut, the ENTP will slowly return to the dynamic, high-energy character they have always been.

INTP

Cognitive Functions: Introverted Thinking – Extroverted Intuition – Introverted Sensing – Extroverted Feeling

How the rut develops:
When they first sense that a problem is developing, the INTP will attempt to examine all sides of the situation in order to understand it as thoroughly as possible. They will search for any logical inconsistencies in the factors surrounding the problem and attempt to make an objective decision that resolves the issue. If they are unable to do so, the INTP will place a heavier focus on their extroverted intuition. They will brainstorm multiple solutions and possibly try a few out to see if they are able to catapult themselves out of the developing rut. If this fails, the INTP will revert to their introverted sensing. At this point they will be aware that they are under stress and will revert to tried-and-true methods of getting things done. They may attempt to solve the problem by using a solution they’ve used in the past and making everything go ‘back to normal.’ If they cannot resolve their situation at this phase, the INTP is at risk of falling prey to their inferior function.

What the rut looks like: An INTP in a rut will revert to their inferior extroverted feeling. This highly logical type will become emotional about their inability to find a logical solution and may lash out at others in an attempt to cover up the fact that they don’t know the answer. They may be harsh and judgmental toward those who try to help them, as they are insecure about their need for guidance. They may jump quickly and defensively to solutions that they have not thoroughly analyzed, simply because they don’t want to admit that they’re unsure of what to do next.

How to get out of it: To pull themselves out of a rut, the INTP needs to re-engage their introverted thinking. If their method of logical analysis has let them down in the past, they may need to work through its inconsistencies and develop an improved system for analyzing information that they can rely on in the future. They can do this through engaging their extroverted intuition and examining the situation through a new lens – they will likely then need a great deal of alone time to decide whether or not their new method of reasoning proves itself to be valid.

What their return to health will look like: As the INTP returns to health, they will require a great deal of alone time to process their thoughts and examine new methods of reasoning. They may turn their focus to independent reading or researching while they pull themselves back into a headspace they’re comfortable with. The INTP will cease to become argumentative and defensive as they regain their confidence in their reasoning abilities.

INTJ

Cognitive Functions: Introverted Intuition – Extroverted Thinking – Introverted Feeling – Extroverted Sensing

How the rut develops:
When they sense a problem is developing, the INTJ will isolate him or herself in an attempt to identify the best possible solution. They will examine all possible courses of action to determine which one will provide the most effective outcome. If this method fails them, the INTJ may place a heavier emphasis on their extroverted thinking. They will attempt to control any external factors that are causing the negative spiral and will take whatever action is necessary. If their attempts at resolving the issue continue to fail, the INTJ will turn to their introverted feeling. By this point they will be aware that they are under stress and may become defensive about their inability to resolve the situation. They will shut off input from others and affirm to themselves that they are capable of solving the problem if they simply apply themselves more effectively. They may call on their personal ideals to help them brainstorm an increasingly abstract solution to the problem. If at this stage the INTJ is incapable of resolving the issue, they are at risk of falling prey to their inferior function.

What the rut looks like: An INTJ in a rut will revert to their inferior function, extroverted sensing. They may lose the ability to see the big picture and develop an obsessive focus on whichever facts are most readily apparent to them. This type feels lost without a long-term focus and may procrastinate getting started on anything of value as they stay fixated on what is directly in front of them. In a prolonged rut, the INTJ may turn to sensory distractions and over-indulge in eating, drinking or sex to distract themselves from their lack of a long-term vision.

How to get out of it: To pull themselves out of a rut, the INTJ will need to reconnect with their introverted intuition. Their tertiary introverted feeling function may help them to connect with their ideals and develop a vision for their future that they can work toward in concrete ways. In this stage, the INTJ may also benefit from brainstorming with other intuitive dominant personalities to help them synthesize ideas and set meaningful goals for the future.

What their return to health will look like: As the INTJ returns to health, they will shift their focus away from petty details and regain their big-picture mindset. They will develop an increased concentration on goals and long-term projects, which will bring them steadily closer to what they want out of the future. A healthy INTJ is an INTJ who can synthesize and carry out long-term projects – in as efficient a manner as possible.

The 5 Friends Every ENFP Needs In Their Lives

1. The INFP

We all need that friend who just gets us on a spiritual level – and nobody understands the ENFP quite as intimately and effortlessly as their introverted counterpart the INFP. These types share all their cognitive functions in only a slightly different order – making communication between them seamlessly intuitive. These types tend to share similar values, a similar worldview and a similar sense of humor. They enjoy a natural connection with one another as one can almost always see where the other is coming from.

This relationship is strengthened by the fact that each type leads with the other’s auxiliary function. When the ENFP gets too caught up in the world of ideas and forgets to tend to their emotional needs, the INFP is happy to sit with them and help them work through what they’re feeling. On the flip side, when the INFP gets stuck in an emotional rut, the ENFP is happy to help them brainstorm ideas that pull them outside of their head and get them to take real-world action. These types balance each other out in terms of their dominant and auxiliary functions and the bond they share with each other is downright irreplaceable.

2. The INTJ

The ENFP-INTJ connection was made in heaven. While these two types are theoretically perfect matches for one another romantically, they also make for fantastic friends. The effervescent ENFP lights up the INTJ’s world with a whirlwind of new ideas, whereas the INTJ grounds the scattered ENFP and helps them focus in on what they really want. These two personalities level each other out immensely and give way to some of the most surprising yet fulfilling friendships.

In a world full of people-pleasers, the INTJ is unafraid to cut through the ENFP’s bullshit and tell them exactly what they think of their choices. When done with tact, this is infinitely helpful to the ENFP, who tends to get caught up in their inner world of fantasies and ideals. On the flip side, the ENFP is able to encourage the INTJ to open up, take a few chances and see things from a different point of view. These two types can grow immensely through friendship with one another, as they’re simultaneously able to affirm one another and grow from each other. This relationship in particular is likely to be long-lasting and deep.

3. The ESFP

If there’s anything the ENFP needs from time to time, it’s to get the hell out of their heads – and the compassionate yet fun-loving ESFP is a fantastic counterpart for doing just that. ESFPs and ENFPs are considered to be look-alike types: They enjoy the same activities, find themselves in many of the same situations and are mistaken for one another in high frequency. Both are adventurous, outgoing people-people who enjoy taking on new situations. However, these types differ in their primary function.

The ENFP leads with extroverted intuition – meaning their world is ruled by possibilities and abstract connections. Conversely, the ESFP leads with extroverted sensing – meaning their world is ruled by in-the-moment action and an appreciation for aesthetics. Because extroverted sensing is a blind spot for ENFPs and extroverted intuition is a blind spot for ESFPs, these two types don’t always understand one another but they both feel wholly unthreatened by the other. This allows for an affectionate relationship to develop between the two types – the ENFP can go to the ESFP when they want to enjoy their lives around someone they feel comfortable with and the ESFP can go to the ENFP when they need a different take on an issue they want to analyze.

These relationships are usually incredibly quick to form, as ESFPs and ENFPs can tell quite quickly that they’re very alike. They usually remain close for as long as they are in close contact with each other, but may quickly lose touch once their original reason for connection is severed (I.e. if one of the two moves away), as the connection tends to be more situational than it is spiritual.

4. The INFJ

These two types have entirely opposite cognitive functions, which they use in the exact same order – making each the yin to the other’s yang. Though these relationships may take a while to form, they tend to be incredibly long lasting once they do. The patient, analytical INFJ balances out the zany, creative ENFP in all the right ways. On the flip side, the exuberant ENFP takes the time to truly get to know and understand the guarded INFJ, which they appreciate.

Both types are intuitives first and feelers second, which means they enjoy analyzing situations in detail before coming to a value-based decision – a process both parties thoroughly enjoy.

5. The ENFP

Try as the other types might, no type is ever going to understand the ENFP as thoroughly and as empathetically as another ENFP. These types intuitively understand the way each other thinks, feels, makes decisions and takes in information. Regardless of external influences, two ENFPs can almost always tap into the other’s mode of reasoning and understand where the other is coming from. And for a type as imaginative and unconventional as the ENFP, being understood is an incredibly rare and valuable experience.

ENFP-ENFP friendships tend to burst into existence quickly, enthusiastically and happily – in classic ENFP fashion. Both parties will be interested in doing similar activities, deliberating over similar issues and spending down time with each another when they need it. Though these two scattered types may fall out of each other’s lives now and then, they will always be keen to pick up right where they left off. The ENFP-ENFP connection is an undeniably magical thing – no ENFP is complete without a close friend of the exact same type.

Honorable mentions

ENTP, INTP, ENFJ

Here’s Which Myers-Briggs Type You’re Most Likely To Mistype As

INFJ

Most likely to mistype as: ENFJ

Why the mistype happens: Extroverted feeling feeds off the emotions of others, which means that INFJs require a great deal of social time in order to remain emotionally stable. This type is highly likely to appear extroverted to those around them, as they are most animated and enthusiastic when they are in the company of others.* Most INFJs are assumed to be ENFJs by others upon first meeting them.

*This is also an important distinction between INFJ and INFP types, as they often mistype as one another. INFJs glean energy from almost any form of positive social interaction, even the ‘niceties’ of small talk, as their extroverted feeling is highly in tune with social conventions/norms. INFPs on the other hand, are only energized by social interaction if it plays on their extroverted intuition – for example, if they are brainstorming ideas with someone or discussing a philosophical issue. The INFJ certainly prefers discussing the ‘big picture issues’ if given the choice, but they’re infinitely more comfortable with small talk than their INFP cousin.

Also likely to mistype as: INTJ

Why this mistype happens: Introverted intuition is the first function that INFJs develop – and this function is cold and detached when standing alone. Before an INFJ adequately develops their extroverted feeling, they may come across as calculating and unemotional to others. This often evens out by the INFJ’s late teen years – however, if they are unaware of how cognitive functions operate, the INFJ is likely to continue believing themselves to be an INTJ indefinitely.

Types that are most likely to mistype as INFJ: INFP, ISFJ

ENFJ

Most likely to mistype as: INFJ

Why the mistype happens: ENFJs are highly analytical in nature and tend to relate to many of the descriptions of their intuitive counterpart the INFJ – especially once they learn that INFJs are the most extroverted introverts. A good way to discern whether you are an ENFJ or an INFJ is to look at which tertiary function you’re most comfortable with –ENFJs usually look polished and put-together due to tertiary extroverted sensing, whereas INFJs may neglect aesthetics but are more comfortable with open-ended, logical reasoning (Introverted thinking) than ENFJs are.

Also likely to mistype as: ESFJ

Why this mistype happens: ENFJs are highly detail-oriented. However, when looking at the letter dichotomies (I vs E, S vs N, etc.) rather than the cognitive functions, detail-orientation is stereotypically associated with S types. For this reason, ENFJs may assume themselves to be S’s rather than Ns. Because ENFJs are both highly in touch with social norms and highly detail oriented, they are often classified as the ‘most sensing’ of the intuitives.

Types that are most likely to mistype as ENFJ: ENFP, ESFJ, INFJ

INFP

*It’s important to note here that INFPs are the most prone of any personality type to mistyping as something else. Because INFPs live in a world of identity possibilities, they enjoy thinking of themselves in various different lights and are able to thoroughly convince themselves – more so than any other type – that they truly are thinkers, judgers, etc. Their extroverted intuition allows them to see a situation from various different angles and their introverted feeling creates an emotional attachment to the type they decide on. For this reason, INFPs are more prone to mistyping than any other type.

Most likely to mistype as: INFJ

Why the mistype happens: Of all the mistypes that happen between any two types in the MBTI, INFPs mistyping as INFJs is by far the most common one – and this is not necessarily the INFP’s fault. INFPs are the least stereotypically perceptive perceivers. They tend to be quite routine-oriented and not particularly spontaneous in nature – they are open-minded and explorative in their thoughts, not their actions. However, since most free online type tests measure perception based on how physically spontaneous one is or is not, almost all INFPs test as INFJs when they first take an online quiz.

Another factor that leads INFPs to believe they are INFJs is the fact that INFJs are the rarest type statistically. Because INFPs tend to be highly creative and individualistic, most of them have never met another person quite like themselves (including other INFPs). For this reason, they find it fitting that their type is 1% of the population – they think this explains their individuality, when in reality it is their introverted feeling that sets them apart in this regard.

Also likely to mistype as: INTP

Why the mistype happens: INFPs are quite analytical in nature. Introverted feeling is a function that picks apart information to get to its core – and this is easily confused with introverted thinking, which operates in a very similar regard. The difference here is what the end goal of the assessment is – for the INFP, the goal is to find the true meaning of everything they are analyzing. For the INTP, the goal is simply to find the most objective truth. Because objective logic is a weak point for the INFP but intensive analysis is not, they may test as Ts in a slightly defensive measure of protecting their intellectualism – when not familiar with Myers-Briggs, they may not understand that one can be both intellectual and emotional.

ENFP

Most likely to mistype as: INFP

Why the mistype happens: ENFPs are the most introverted extroverts by a landslide. More so than any other E types, ENFPs require alone time to process their feelings and values. Additionally, their main function – extroverted intuition – is not an extroverted function in the stereotypical sense of the word – it focuses on the external world of possibilities and ideas rather than the world of people. What distinguishes an ENFP from an INFP is predominantly their world-view – an ENFP and an INFP may spend equal amounts of time alone but an ENFP will spend most of that time brainstorming ideas for the future and planning their next project whereas an INFP will spend more time analyzing their feelings (or the feelings of others) and picking apart ideas.

Also likely to mistype as: ENFJ

Why the mistype happens: ENFPs are ‘big-picture’ perceivers but they’re usually not all that spontaneous on a day-to-day level. This type actually requires a great deal of external structure in order to reach their full potential – and for this reason, a healthy ENFP may religiously stick to a day-to-day routine. Many ENFPs test as Js when they use an online test to assess their type rather than learning about cognitive functions.

Types that are most likely to mistype as ENFP: ESFP, INFP

INTJ

Most likely to mistype as: INFJ

Why the mistype happens: INTJs value self-improvement quite highly, which can lead them to develop their tertiary function – introverted feeling – to an impressive extent. This type tends to place a high value on peace and harmony, despite the ‘calculating overlord’ stereotype they are so often thrust into. An INTJ who is unfamiliar with cognitive functions may type as an INFJ, as their values and principles often line up with those of a feeler’s.

Also likely to mistype as: ENTJ

Why this mistype happens: INTJs are highly concerned with maintaining order in their external environment, which causes them to call on their auxiliary function, extroverted thinking, quite regularly. This may make them appear extroverted to those who don’t know the INTJ particularly well. The main way to distinguish whether you are an ENTJ or an INTJ is to examine which tertiary function you’re more comfortable with – INTJs are quite comfortable analyzing their emotions and values but are less comfortable with athletic pursuits, whereas ENTJs are more confident in their athletic abilities but less comfortable analyzing emotions.

ENTJ

Most likely to mistype as: INTJ

Why the mistype happens: Though ENTJs enjoy the company of others, they tend to value efficiency above human interaction and will often choose working alone over working with others if they believe that it’s the best way to get the job done (and it often is). This may cause them to incorrectly assume that they are introverts. An ENTJ is also much quicker to act than an INTJ, who places a slightly higher value on accuracy than efficiency.

Also likely to mistype as: ENTP

Why the mistype happens: Because ENTJs are highly unconventional in their thinking, they may identify highly with their loosy-goosy cousin the ENTP. The main differentiation between the types is their end goal: An ENTP enjoys analyzing various sides of a situation for the sake of analysis alone, whereas the ENTJ analyzes various options as they pertain to a specific desired outcome. These two types actually share zero cognitive functions and this mistype is easily resolved through learning about the cognitive functions and how they manifest.

Types that are most likely to mistype as ENTJ: ENTP, INTJ, ENFJ

ENTP

Most likely to mistype as: INTP

Why the mistype happens: ENTPs lead with extroverted intuition, which is an idea-oriented function rather than a people-oriented one – for this reason, the ENTP does not require as much social interaction as the average extrovert. This type prefers the company of others who they can debate and brainstorm with – they’d rather be alone than in the company of those who do not stimulate them intellectually. To differentiate between the INTP and the ENTP, a good trick is to examine which tertiary function they’re most comfortable with. An ENTP is often adept at tuning into the feelings of those around them, thanks to their tertiary extroverted feeling, but they are uncomfortable relying on tried-and-true methods to get things done. An INTP is more aware than the ENTP of their physical needs but finds it quite difficult to adequately assess what those around them are feeling.

Also likely to mistype as: ENTJ

Why the mistype happens: ENTPs are proficient at accomplishing whatever goals they set their minds to – and their determination often causes them to act like a judger in the pursuit of those goals. This distinction is clarified by learning about cognitive functions – ENTPs lead with extroverted intuition, which enjoys basking in a world of possibilities, whereas ENTJs lead with extroverted thinking, which values efficiency and getting things done – whether it’s an over-arching goal they’ve set their minds on or a simple routine matter. ENTPs are much more likely to let the little things slide. They are determined, but only when they’ve set their minds to something – otherwise they couldn’t care less.

Types that are most likely to mistype as ENTP: INTP, ENFP, ENTJ

INTP

Most likely to mistype as: INTJ

Why the mistype happens: Though INTPs are perceivers, they are highly concerned with accuracy in their intellectual pursuits and may take a regimented approach to their work. This type is highly perceptive in the intellectual sense but on a day-to-day basis they are not impulsive, which is the only measure that most online tests take into account to determine between judgers and perceivers. For this reason, many INTPs originally test as INTJs. The distinction between these two types can be understood through learning about cognitive functions – despite sharing three letters, these types have zero cognitive functions in common and actually process information incredibly differently.

Also likely to mistype as: ENTP

Why the mistype happens: INTPs enjoy exploring new ideas and thanks to introverted intuition being their auxiliary function, they often enjoy brainstorming and debating new ideas as a means of giving them a new topic to analyze. Though it’s more common for ENTPs to mistype as INTPs than vice versa, these types share all the same cognitive functions in only a slightly different order and can each easily pass for the other in many situations.

ISFP

Most likely to mistype as: INFJ

Why this mistype happens: ISFPs are often considered to be the most intuitive of all sensors. This pensive type takes life incredibly seriously and analyzes all options for their future carefully before reaching a decision – causing an incredibly high number of them to mistype as INFJs. Additionally, the combination of introverted feeling and extroverted sensing can mimic extroverted feeling in many regards. Last but not least, the highly artistic ISFP often feels misunderstood by others and identifies with the statistically rare nature of the INFJ. The main distinction between these types comes down to the difference between introverted feeling (the ISFP’s first function) and introverted intuition (the INFJ’s first function). The ISFP has tertiary Ni and will make specific, detailed plans for the future when necessary, but they are infinitely more comfortable analyzing their feelings and creating art than they are making specific plans for the future and following through on them intensely – a process that rules the INFJ’s world.

Also likely to mistype as: INFP

Why this mistype happens: Because ISFPs are deeply spiritual and highly analytical, they are prone to mistyping as Ns. This usually occurs when the individual types themselves via an online test rather than through the employment of cognitive functions. When cognitive functions are taken into account, it becomes apparent that the ISFP’s analytical nature is due to their introverted feeling, whereas their artistic nature is supported through extroverted sensing, not the hopelessly theoretical extroverted intuition.

Types that are most likely to mistype as ISFP: INFP, ISFJ

ESFP

Most likely to mistype as: ENFP

Why this mistype happens: ESFPs are infinitely more analytical than they are given credit for in the MBTI world. This type backs up their extroverted sensing with introverted feeling – a function that gives them an excellent grasp on social situations and allows them to thoroughly analyze those around them. This type often scores ENFP on tests, as they confuse their ‘people-intuition’ with being an intuition-dominant type. Though both types are analytical about people, the ENFP lives predominantly in a world of theoretical ideas, whereas the ESFP lives in a world of concrete, realistic people-possibilities.

Also likely to mistype as: ESFJ

Why this mistype happens: Though ESFPs are unlikely to actually test as ESFJs, they are prone to being mistaken as this type by others. Both types are highly social, highly sensory-oriented and highly in tune with the feelings of others. An ESFP is easy to confuse with an ESFJ at a first glance, but the ESFP’s go-with-the-flow nature will soon reveal the difference between the two – ESFJs thrive on planning ahead whereas ESFPs enjoy being surprised by life!

Types that are most likely to mistype as ESFP: ESFJ, ESTP

ESTP

Most likely to mistype as: ESTJ

Why this mistype happens: ESTPs know exactly what they want, and have no reservations in going for it. This type is quick to act and direct in their approach – two traits that are commonly associated with judgers. The ESTP’s direct, no-nonsense attitude is in fact attributed to their dominant extroverted sensing – but this distinction is difficult to make when assessing type via an online test that does not take cognitive functions into account. As a result, many ESTPs assume themselves to be ESTJs.

Also likely to mistype as: ESFP

Why this mistype happens: ESTPs have tertiary extroverted feeling, which allows them to tune into the feelings of others with impressive accuracy. This happy-go-lucky type is theorized to be the most cheerful of all types and is often assumed to be a feeler as a result. ESTPs are walking proof that being a thinker certainly does not make one mean-spirited!

Types that are most likely to mistype as ESTP: ISTP, ESFP

ISTP

Most likely to mistype as: INTP

Why this mistype happens: ISTPs are incredibly analytical and spend the majority of their time analyzing external stimuli. This type refuses to rest until their introverted thinking understands each of the individual parts that make up the whole in a given situation. This is a trait that they share with their close cousin type the INTP. The difference between the two types occurs in their auxiliary function – where the INTP prefers to dwell in the world of theoretical possibilities, the ISTP is more grounded in the here-and-now: they analyze situations as they are, whereas INTPs analyze situations as they could be.

Also likely to mistype as: INTJ

Why this mistype happens: ISTPs can be fiercely introverted, and may call on their introverted intuition to help them analyze a given situation. An ISTP with highly developed tertiary Ni can actually resemble an INTJ in their approach – focused on predicting the future based on the information that is objectively available to them. It is their auxiliary function, extroverted sensing, that provides the clue to their true personality – extroverted sensing is often underdeveloped in INTJs but highly prevalent in ISTPs.

ESFJ

Most likely to mistype as: ENFJ

Why the mistype happens: ESFJs are highly in touch with the feelings of others, which may cause them to test as an intuitive. This people-focused type shares a great deal of personality traits with their ENFJ cousin – the main difference between these types lies in their auxiliary functions. Whereas the ENFJ focuses on the theoretical motivations behind the actions of others and how they fit into the bigger picture of who the person is and how they’ll behave in the future, the ESFJ focuses closely on remembering the details of what happened and cataloging them for future reference. ESFJs are extremely cautious about never making the same mistake twice – they are the masters of forgiving but never forgetting.

Likely to resemble: ESFP

Why the mistype happens: Because they value external harmony above all else, ESFJs may come across as being more accommodating than they actually are – to the point where they resemble perceivers in their interactions with others. In reality, the ESFJ values consistency – they may rather make others happy than maintain their routine but that does not a perceiver make. ESFJs and ESFPs actually share zero cognitive functions and analyze information entirely differently.

Types that are most likely to mistype as ESFJ: ESFP, ISFJ

ISFJ

Most likely to mistype as: INFJ

Why this mistype happens: ISFJs are highly introspective and analytical – this makes it easy to confuse their nature with that of the INFJ’s. The difference between the two types lies in the topic of their analysis – ISFJs place a heavy focus on the past, and how past experiences can be analyzed and applied to their current lives. Conversely, INFJs analyze the future almost exclusively – they may bring past experiences into the mix but they’re less prone to dwelling on them than their ISFJ counterparts. INFJs aim to determine a highly theoretical ‘optimal’ future for themselves and others (regardless of whether this future is concretely achievable), whereas ISFJs aim to concretely employ a future that is realistic – based on what has proven itself to work best in the past.

Also likely to mistype as: ISTJ

Why this mistype happens: ISFJs lead with introverted sensing, which makes them highly practical, despite their compassionate nature. Men of this type are particularly susceptible to testing as Ts, as SJ types tend to place a high value on conventional social roles – and men are often socialized to employ ‘T’ characteristics. Both ISTJs and ISFJs are inclined to dutifully help out their loved ones come hell and high water – the difference is, the ISFJ will feel the other person’s pain on a personal level, whereas the ISTJ helps primarily out of a sense of duty.

ISTJ

Most likely to mistype as: INTJ

Why this mistype happens: ISTJs are incredibly analytical – to the point where they are often mistaken for intuitives. This type spends a great deal of time deliberating over the information they’ve taken in and analyzing whether or not each piece fits with their worldview – a trait that is analytical in its own right. However, it is a sharp contrast to introverted intuition, which concerns itself primarily with predicting and planning for the future. ISTJs place a high focus on tradition and the past, whereas INTJs are notoriously future-focused.

Also likely to mistype as: ISFJ

Why this mistype happens: ISTJs care deeply for those in their lives and will go to almost any lengths for those they care about. For this reason, ISTJs are often assumed by others to be feelers. In reality, the extreme loyalty portrayed by ISTJs is a product of their introverted sensing and introverted feeling, rather than extroverted feeling. However, the motivation for their actions can be easy to confuse – especially since ISTJs are not big talkers!

Types that are most likely to mistype as ISTJ: ESTJ, ISFJ

ESTJ

Most likely to mistype as: ISTJ

Why this mistype happens: ESTJs definitely feed off the energy of others – but if they’re torn between getting something done right and getting something done as a team, they’ll choose getting it done right every time. ESTJs may manifest as introverts due to their tendency to want to “Take care of business” first and enjoy themselves second. But at the end of the day, imposing order on their external environment is what gives the ESTJ the most energy – making them an extroverted type through and through.

Also likely to mistype as: ENTJ

Why this mistype happens: ESTJs and ENTJs both lead with extroverted thinking. These two types are incredibly easy to confuse with one another, as they both value productivity above all else and tend to take the lead in the business world. The distinction between the two comes into play when you examine their auxiliary function – ESTJs use introverted sensing, which means they veer toward “tried and true” methods of getting things done. ENTJs use introverted intuition, which means they’re more open to unconventional methods of getting things done, and are slightly more comfortable with uncertainty.

What Each Myers-Briggs Type Does In College

ENFP: Starts writing every essay at 5pm the day before it’s due and has still written nothing at 3am after cleaning their room, calling their mother, having a dance party, booking a spontaneous trip for spring break and composing several inspired blog articles.

ESTP: Attends class for the sole purpose of maintaining their sports scholarship and/or fraternity presidency.

INFJ: Is consistently torn between their desire to earn straight As and their desire to lament over their latest existential crisis.

ISTP: Manages to completely flip their sleep schedule by the end of freshman year and is not seen in broad daylight again until graduation day.

INFP: Is enthralled to finally leave their small, conservative town and befriend other social justice enthusiasts whom they probably already know from tumblr.

ESTJ: Is that student at the front of the lecture hall who puts up their hand and answers a question that nobody asked, just to show that they did all the readings.

ISTJ: Borders on a heart attack every time an assignment is handed back without adequate explanation as to exactly why they didn’t achieve a higher mark.

ENFJ: Somehow gets straight 90s while also running several campus clubs and maintaining a serious relationship.

INTJ: Does all the required reading for the upcoming year over summer break and spends the remainder of the school year feeling vaguely annoyed with his or her classmates who just cannot seem to keep up.

ENTJ: Is only in school as a formality – they’ve already lined up several competitive post-graduation job offers.

INTP: Lands a job as a lab assistant in their first year and is not seen outside of said lab until fifteen years later when they graduate with a PhD or three.

ENTP: Goes to lectures for classes they’re not even in and plays devil’s advocate to everything the professor says, just for fun.

ISFJ: Spends four years taking care of their drunken roommates. Starts dating the person they’ll eventually marry by the end of freshman year.

ESFJ: Sits in the front of every lecture hall, color-coding their notes using various highlighters and reminding you how much you don’t have your life together.

ISFP: Does a lot of drugs but nonetheless ends up landing a job in a creative field, earning more money than many of their high-achieving classmates.

ESFP: Probably coined the phrase, “Work hard, play hard” during their college years. Emphasis on the play hard.

25 Struggles Only INFJs Will Understand

1. Being able to predict with eerie accuracy how a situation is going to play out, but being too polite to tell people that they’re making a mistake… so just keeping quiet and having to watch exactly what you thought would happen, happen.

2. Having zero interest in casual dating in a world that’s obsessed with flings and one-night stands.

3. The consistent, nagging voice in the back of your mind telling you that you’re not living up to your full potential.

4. Having much never met another person like yourself, since INFJs are (a) Only 1% of the population and (b) Usually inside reading a book.

5. The constant struggle of wanting alone time but feeling the uncontrollable compulsion to go make your loved ones happy.

6. Fooling everyone into thinking you’re an extrovert while you’re in public and then confusing the heck out of them when you don’t want to go out tonight because… well, you just don’t want to.

7. When pretty much all of your favorite people are fictional.

8. Not wanting to work for a corrupt, capitalistic society … but also needing to pay rent and eat.

9. When you want to go to sleep but your brain wants to stay up analyzing the great mysteries of the universe.

10. Having such a clear idea of something in your mind that it’s impossible to convey it using words, so you just talk around the concept for hours and end up making everyone more confused than ever.

11. Being just idealistic enough to conceive of a Utopian society but just realistic enough to understand all of the reasons why it could never exist.

12. When a conversation with someone doesn’t unfold the way you meticulously planned for it to in your mind.

13. Being in tune with absolutely everybody’s feelings except your own.

14. “Funny thing – I already watched our entire relationship play out in my mind. It ended in a painful divorce ten years down the road at which point I lost custody of our beautiful Dachshund Aristotle, whom I loved with all my heart. So no, I won’t be available to go out on a second date with you.”

15. Oscillating between revealing absolutely nothing about yourself to others and then revealing way too much and apologizing for it.

16. Actually, feeling the need to apologize for pretty much any emotion or need that you outwardly express.

17. Accidentally creating ridiculous standards for other people in your mind and then being disappointed when they fail to live up to them.

18. Hating conflict but having people constantly come to you with their conflicts.

19. When you finally find the nerve to open up to a loved one about what you’re thinking or feeling deep down – and then they still don’t get it.

20. Needing close relationships in order to be happy, but also needing a lot of alone time in order to be happy.

21. Being a magnet for self-destructive people and then dwelling on their problems ten times more than they do themselves.

22. Being intellectually gifted but also entirely out of touch with the world around you.

23. Being a compulsive people-pleaser in relationships because your partner being unhappy would actually feel worse than you being unhappy.

24. Kind of fitting in everywhere but really fitting in nowhere.

25. When you occasionally remember that the rest of the world doesn’t live life almost entirely inside of their minds – and honestly having no idea what that must be like.

ENFP: The excitable yet surprisingly insightful friend who subtly gives you a pep talk every time you hang out and leaves you feeling like you could be the next President.

ESFJ: The friend who lets you live at their house for two weeks after you break up with your significant other so they can make sure you’re eating, sleeping and going to work like a functioning human being.

ENTJ: The successful and slightly bossy friend who is constantly challenging you to reach your full potential – because they see it in you, even when you don’t see it in yourself.

ENFJ: The wise mother hen who’s there come hell or high water but isn’t afraid to give you tough love if ever and whenever you need it.

ISFJ: The undyingly loyal friend who reminds you of your grandmother but in a good way. As in, they regularly bake you cookies and are always down for a relaxing night in.

ENTP: The chaotic friend who regularly pops into your life, asks you to join them on a crazy new project or adventure and then completely disappears for 6-12 months at a time.

INTP: The friend who NEVER initiates hanging out but is paradoxically almost always down to chill – as long as you’re down to talk science or conspiracy theories with them.

INFJ: The friend you have to plan a week ahead to see (in order to give them time to mentally prepare for the hangout) but then always end up spending ten plus hours discussing the nature of life, the Universe and everything with.

ISFP: The cool, probably hipster friend who goes to a lot of music festivals and likes everything exactly 6 months before it becomes popular.

INTJ: Your friend who’s in MENSA and sometimes rubs it in your face… but also has a downright fascinating mind so you’re okay with it.

ESFP: The friend who is down for pretty much anything, pretty much anytime and is more fun than basically everyone else you know combined.

ISTP: The chill friend who goes along with anything and always somehow knows exactly what’s wrong with your computer and/or car.

ESTP: The athletic, adventurous friend who always seems to be off doing something dangerous or crazy whenever you want to hang out with them.
