If someone I was trying to get to know was guarding their phone when certain people texted them I would feel like he has no intention of making me part of his world or friendship circle, I, I know it would be none of my business who he would be talking to and visa versa, but if you still have a certain attachment to an ex, and she is pestering, and he is reciprocating IN A GAURDED manner, jeeeez! She isn't checking his messages but he is being shady af and tip toeing around. Fair enough they need to have the exclusivity talk but least he can do is be honest. If he has a tendency to be secretive and sneaky and shady, well that will boil over in to a relationship. He should be courting her right now if he's serious about her and taking it somewhere, not carrying his phone around in his ass in case his ex rings the metaphorical bell.
By the way im of the opinion that your partner should not be in touch or in contact with their ex when in an exclusive relationship. It's wrong and disrespectful. They were probably once porking each other, had feelings, did things etc. Its plain wrong.
