So I met this really interesting woman last night that gushed about her husband very openly. What was really interesting was that she said she felt the universe was telling her to be with him. Examples she gave were weird things like seeing/ meeting people with same name, ending up working within the same career...stuff like that.

To me, I say purely coincidence.like buying a car and then seeing your CSR everywhere. What are your thoughts and why? Does the "universe" really give you messages like that?

I don't know. I am open to the possibility, but I am skeptical. I think the idea of fate, Divine design, etc is just something people tell themselves to feel good about the decisions they make. I believe people will often filter "evidence" and choose to see and hear things that confirms an idea/belief and disregard anything that doesn't confirm that idea/belief. It's really about choosing door #1 vs door #2. Was Neo destined to take the red pill? I really don't think so. If he did take the blue pill the writers wouldn't have a great story to tell.

We make a choice and that takes us in one direction, where another choice takes us in another. Anyone can say "it was fate", "we were meant to" or "suppose to meet" etc...., but there is no way to really prove anything different is there? There is no way to press pause, choose door #2 to see if that will bring you to the exact same place as door #1.

I think life events, the people we meet, get into relationships with, the careers we end up in are all based on a series of choices and life lessons we choose to apply or not apply, which ultimately lead to our happiness or misery.

My two cents...

I have a hard time believing those kind of messages, even though I've been guilty of supporting that idea when ever it would support something I really, really want :-)

What I do trust though in decision making / guidance is my gut feeling. I can't remember a time it would've been wrong. However, I have gone against it many, many times, because there was something I really, really wanted :-)

I think that's the reason why most people go against their gut. They want something and their gut is either saying that it has to wait or not happen.

I believe coincidences happen often and sometimes we read into things we shouldn't. The conversation made me really think because she is convinced. The romantic on me eats up the story, but the logical side says no way. However, there are people that seem to be more "in tune" with the world/ guts then others.

One of my friends seems to be that way.

Knowing that I have this foolproof system of warning me of danger or making me feel if something is right or wrong makes me feel safe and empowered. I still might not listen to it or I just decide against it, because there's something I want, but those decisions are in my control. If I fail royally, then I can take the blame for that, but I still feel empowered, because it was my informed decision.

However, people don't, for the most part. There are a few exceptions, where people hold themselves accoutible for their fuck ups but those people are few and far between.

People CONSCIOUSLY and willfully make wrong decisions, knowing they are against what they believe to be in their best interest ... then when it fucks up, and it will ... they blame someone else.

Your two cents translate to millions in my book.
