Why do people ask questions

That they really don't care about?? I hate that.

They're afraid of silence, so they ask questions.

That's my guess, anyway.

Not everyone is like that though. I for one only ask If I am really interested, otherwise I would avoid people and topics all together.

Purely as conversation starters, how else do you get to talk with someone you've just met? You start with general questions until you establish some common ground.
