Period sex while in the shower is the best way to go, b/c it takes away the nasty 'visual' that some people associate with period sex. Plus, although water tends to dry out things down there, the fluids from her cycle acts as kind of a lube during the time...this is why some men say that sex actually feels better during period (or even pregnancy) sex.
I agree that sex during while she's bleeding heavy is a bit much. But I see nothing wrong with her waiting until the flow has calmed down (or almost ended) to have sex.
