William Wharton, born 7 November 1925, is the pen name of the author Albert Du Aime, an American-born author best known for his first novel Birdy, which was also successful as a film.
Apparently, on the eve of his daughter's wedding, she asked him 'what is love?'. He answered: 'it is passion, admiration and respect. if you have two, you have enough. If you have three, you don't have to die before you go to heaven.'
I would need the respect frist, I believe with respect the passion will come and then admiration for a life time and that is if you are compatible enough with the person to get all three.
This is just my choice of the three but in all honestly, I want more than just those 3. I want the communication and the trust just as well as the loyalty FOREVER. 🙂
bran: respect isn't enough on it's own is it? in fact you are going back on what you said in that thread about spouses becoming raspberry ripples and how you would leave them if they didn't turn you on any more.
SR: you're not defensive in the slightest are you!! LOL @ 'lowest life form'
passion isn't enough on it's own either. at some point you will have to hold a conversation with your partner.
i say all three. in fact i say add another fourth thing - kindness. so i want all three and one more for good measure.

I agree, so...
I would say that admiration is a natural byproduct of respect; therefore, my third essential would have to be Communication. And by that, I imply that the communication between the two is grounded in honesty. Open Honest Communication. It should start the relationship, and carry it through till death us do part...
oh! and you have to give me the controls to the world's climate. rain will be banned apart from on special occasions or when my begonias need a drink. snow is a no-no from now on. it's far too cold and spooky. grey skies? VERBOTEN!!!
"Being a man and hence lower life form, I think I need passion first."
Naw, I'm right there with ya, with respect second. Don't respect and admiration kind of overlap, though? Just thinking of the few people I respect in this life, I realize I admire them too.
i think love is much more than that....i could be wrong or i could be in heaven already...lol definitely the three together unconditionally but also consideration, honesty and security, balance/harmony, communication. These could be the branches that grow on top of the ones mentioned by Roxy: passion, admiration and respect!!!! i thank God for the above every day, and i wish/hope that every person out there will find it one day!!!!
