He'll be 11 next week, but who's counting

Anyways, it's national bull month so here is something thought provoking for you.

I was driving my son to school this morning when he asks me this strange question....

son: Mom? Is there anything faster than the speed of light?

me: ::half paying attention because it's too early for questions:::.....Huh? Um, I don't know. Why?

son: Well, I was gonna say something but you won't think it makes sense.

me: Tell me anyway...

son: Well, what's faster, the speed of light or the speed of sound?

::::::::::::::::::::can anyone answer this? Because I couldn't:::::::::::::::::::::::

me: Oh baby, I don't know, I'll look it up later......

son: Well, aren't they the fastest things we know of? (same answer fom me)

son again: I know what's faster than both of them.

me: what's that....

son: If you really want to be someplace far away, all you have to do is think about it. Isn't that faster than the speed of light and sound?

hmmm...sort of true. He's 10. I wanna know where he's been. He was really absorbed with this whole concept.

Just sharing : ) . . . unless someone really has the answers, lol!

Yeah.. smart kid. Smart question.

The speed of sound in the air is limited by the earth's atmosphere depending on the density of the air. i.e. it's faster closer to sea level and slower the higher up into the atmosphere you go. In air, I think it's somewhere around 600 - 700 mi/hr. The idea is that the denser something is, the faster the speed of sound. It's faster in water and even faster when moving through a solid.. Why you can hear a train coming from miles if you listen to the tracks.

The speed of light (186,000 mi/sec) is the maximum speed limit in the universe. It's the maximum speed of all informational transfer and communication. Explaining why there's nothing faster than the speed of light is more complicated.. but it can be explained if you understand the Relativity theory.

I copied and pasted the whole thing somewhere else so i can show him in the morning. Thank you. This whole last senetence is going to conjure up even more questions, I can feel it. He's going to want to listen to the train tracks now, lol...if it wasn't so dangerous I'd probably let him. But for now, he can just "think" about it...

sb... he has mercury in gemini so I am the lucky recipient of hard to answer questions, lol
