I like water colors. I don't really have any tips because I just go for it. If I'm not liking how the painting is turning out I can always add some acrylic on top of it and change the course it's taking.

I really enjoy experimenting with my water colors. Like, using salt water instead of regular water causes the color to expand differently on the canvas/paper. Or throwing salt on the painting once you have the colors down but it's still wet.

I do ....

Paper is more important than brush or paint with water colour

Water is what pulls the pigment ...paper sucks it in.

You need to get the right weight of paper ....it's gonna suck in the water ..at first as a beginner you need heavier weight imo ...350 grms per ream (weight is measured in reams)

It's still possibly going to buckle ..so you always stretch it some people say you do this by soaking water colour paper in the bath ..i just usually paint over with water with a brush though ....and tape it out on a board to stretch it

Buy masking fluid ..during water colour you will use a few 'washes' and masking fluid can be used to prevent one or two from being applied to certain areas then it can be removed don't use new brushes for masking fluid.

Water colour is diff from other paint in that you change the colour value (a colour's value is how dark it is or how light) through water ...the paper becomes a type of white...so make sure you mix up the values ...more and less water to each colour as you go ...to get diff values of light and dark

You are working from light to dark ...from planning ...from dark to light through techniques like pulling in...using water on an already made stroke (that had little water and more pigment)

If you are sketching remember to use light hb ..you can't erase after painting really ..and if you want to erase paint you have to lift it ..(and you never completely erase.) You use water and then blot with a tissue it lifts some pignment out.

There is a way to make crystal water colours using epsom salts and salt..in water .

You can also use rubbing alcohol to push paint away πŸ™‚

I have tried in the past and it never works out haha. But when people can it is so impressive and gorgeous. I've always done well with pastels.... much safer

Do you have any pieces of work to share? I may try pastels.....

What do you mean that it never worked out?

I've heard of those techniques. There's a lot you can do with water colors, that's why I love them so much. And also why I like to just go for it and see what happens.

Another tip would be to use the water colors sparingly until you are used to them. You can always add more layers of the watercolors to get the desired vibrancy - it's not easy, or possible at all sometimes, to fix a mistake if you go overboard.
