Wow, I would love to discuss with your dad! He's a fan like me! I read a few Peter Straub's too.

All my gifts from friends and family are books. I tell them all books, jewelry.

I've read a million stephen king books, most of what was released before the 2000s.

But it's impossible to talk about the books without talking of the movies

because, in fact, king is the writer of the cinematographical era.

His books are written like movie synopsis, with scenes and almost camera motion. Describing cinematic experiences.

That's why he's so succesful with the modern audience and why his movies are so frequently adapted to the screen.

Mr. Mercedes series was good . Of course now it’s a show though.

The best series is The Gunslinger series in my opinion. I didn't want it to end.

I didn't want to do "Mr. Mercedes" because it was categorized as a crime/detective novel; not horror.

Oh that makes sense. I’m really into that genre lol he didn’t okay with it.

Has anyone read the Dark Tower series? I kind of want to at some point but I’m not sure if I will. That’s a lotta books lol. I think it’s cool how characters/places from that series cross over into a lot of his other books like “Insomnia” which is probably my favorite by him I’ve read

Yes, and yes to both.

I call "The Dark Tower" series the gunslinger series. I did not want it to end. A murderous train that asks riddles. I figured out the riddles too.

The movies are pure SHIT.

You cannot reflect how Stephen King allows us into the stream of consciousness and subconscious thought of the characters in a movie. And, that's what makes him a great writer.

Remember Skeleton Crew and the doctor starving on the island?

I've read a lot of his, but my favorites are probably:

Rose Madder

Insomnia

The Shining

Oh Rise Madder was great... female empowerment.

Insomnia had me falling asleep for a while but, when it took off... it took off.

All of his books are great. Haven't read a loser yet. Although Arielle and I are going to do "Doctor Sleep" the part two to "The Shining" and Hydorah claims it's not good.

Wanna join us with "Dr. Sleep?"

Read this and tell me Rhea of the Coos ain't the most hilariously revolting character that ever existed in the history of literature!

The woman, Theresa Maria Dolores O'Shyven, was forty years old, plump, pretty, mother of four, avaquero of laughing temperament. Although her husband was a range-rider, the O'Shyven clan was what would have been called middle-class in another place and time. Her two oldest children were grown and gone, one right out o' Barony. The third eldest was sparking and hoping to marry his heart's delight at Year's End. Only the youngest suspected something was wrong with Ma, and this one had no idea how close Theresa was to complete obsessional madness.

Soon, Rhea thought, watching Theresa avidly in the ball. She 'II start doing it soon, but first she's got to get rid of the brat. There was no school at Reaptide, and the stalls opened only for a few hours in the afternoon, so Theresa sent her youngest daughter off with a pie.

A Reaptide gift to a neighbor, Rhea surmised, although she couldn't hear the soundless instructions the woman gave her daughter as she pulled a knitted cap down over the girl's ears. And 'twouldn't be a neighbor too close, either; she'd want time, would Theresa Maria Dolores O'Shyven, time to be a-choring. It was a good-sized house, and there were a lot of corners in it that needed cleaning.

Rhea chuckled; the chuckle turned into a hollow gust of coughing. In the corner, Musty looked at the old woman hauntedly. Although far from the emaciated skeleton that his mistress had become, Musty didn't look good at all. The girl was shown out with the pie under her arm; she paused to give her mother a single troubled look, and then the door was shut in her face. "Now!" Rhea croaked. "Them comers is waitin! Down on yer knees, woman, and get to business!"

First Theresa went to the window. When she was satisfied with what she saw—her daughter out the gate and down the High Street, likely—she turned back to her kitchen. She walked to the table and stood there, looking dreamy-eyed into space. "No, none o' that, now!" Rhea cried impatiently. She no longer saw her own filthy hut, she no longer smelled either its rank aromas or her own. She had gone into the Wizard's Rainbow. She was with Theresa O'Shyven, whose cottage had the cleanest comers in all Mejis.

"Hurry, woman!" Rhea half-screamed. "Get to yer housework!" As if hearing, Theresa unbuttoned her housedress, stepped out of it, and laid it neatly over a chair. She pulled the hem of her clean, mended shift up over her knees, went to the comer, and got down on all fours.

"That's it, my corazon!" Rhea cried, nearly choking on a phlegmy mixture of coughing and laughter. "Do yer chores, now, and do em wery pert!" Theresa O'Shyven poked her head forward to the full length of her neck, opened her mouth, stuck out her tongue, and began to lick the corner. She lapped it as Musty lapped his milk.

Rhea watched this, slapping her knee and whooping, her face growing redder and redder as she rocked from side to side. She held her stomach in her waxy hands and rocked back and forth with glee. Oh, Theresa was her favorite, aye! No doubt! For hours now she would crawl about on her hands and knees with her ass in the air, licking into the comers, praying to some obscure god—not even the Man-Jesus God—for forgiveness of who knew what as she did this, her penance. Sometimes she got splinters in her tongue and had to pause to spit blood into the kitchen basin.

Up until now some sixth sense had always gotten her to her feet and back into her dress before any of her family returned, but Rhea knew that sooner or later the woman's obsession would take her too far, and she would be surprised. Perhaps today would be the day—the little girl would come back early, perhaps for a coin to spend in town, and discover her mother down on her knees and licking the comers. Oh, what a spin and raree! How Rhea wanted to see it! How she longed to—

I just about died when I read this a couple years back. Especially the scenes with her stewing in her hut, furious at everyone and everything. Reminds me of several DXPers in that way.

Well, she's a Witch. He done good wit her.

What I loved most about this series is King put in a black main character. Just like Clive Barker did in "Imajica' with Pie O Pah. She was two sexes whatever you liked, even if you hadn't admitted it to yourself.

My dad said the book is not as scary as the shining.

He recommended Dean Koontz’s “Jane Hawk” series

I'm not into "scary" so to speak.

There's a psychological aspect to fear. A horror to everyday life.

Most stereotypical "horror" movies make me laugh.

Stephen King brings fear. Fear that I'm very familiar with.

Chapter One

Favorite quotes:

"Danny listened in wide-eyed fascination. He had always thought the story of Bluebeard was the scariest of all time, the scariest there ever could be, but this one was worse. Because it was true."

Chapter One:

I'm loving the 1st chapter as I relate and it fits my current plan of service.

Danny is taught how to detach. Something that I'm so good at, I often drift away. Or, I fail to take action. Detachment is also a focus of King's "Lisey's Story."

It's like watching your life on t.v. At least, that's how it feels to me. Or, I simply rise above, literally and in many ways, figuratively. So much so, I am disassociative.

For Danny, his detachment lesson is to imagine the ghosts in boxes. As he discovers that the ghosts are feeding off of his "shining." He is giving them life through his ability to see them and the emotions involved.

As far as my mission... Dick Holloran, tells Danny of a sadistic pedophile grandfather. How his parents tolerated and knew about the abuse. But, as the grandfather told, Dick, they put up with it because they want his money and his house when he dies.

Needless to say, their are children that are victims of sadists at very young ages. They need love, they need to heal. And a caregiver that not only understands but, has similar experiences and will be able to teach them how to heal, survive. That is what Dick is doing for Danny.

And, this is why I am becoming a foster parent.

It seems that Danny will grow through even worse times as he too has to teach a child with "the shining." The same way that Dick is teaching him.

I love negro terms like "the shining." Being from the south, there are so many expressions like this.

NOT the Movies...

This is going to be difficult in one thread to discuss several books of this prolific horror genius.

I love horror. It's my main genre from Dean Koontz, Anne Rice, Clive Barker, to Robin Cooke.

So first, is this worth it, am I alone? Fans, are you out there?

Gerads game ...pet cemetary .Under The Dome ...Rose Madder.. IT..i read these like when i eleven!

I used to go into book shops be very quiet so people would forget i was there and read whatever ...i came across this corner ...and i would read three chapters then go back the next day reading another three....

There is NO way i should have been reading these at that age!

I avoided seeing the FILM IT until i realized the left the harsh stuff out. In the book they all lose their virginity after killing IT. Which is like code for no longer believing in childhood fears and entering the darker adult world....and losing your virginity methinks.

It's really weird ..although his stories are well horrible ..you always get the impression the voice writing them is very sweet.

Bedtime tales for grave snatchers

By Tom Richards

...police found a young man sitting in the park. Andrew was still holding the bloody axe that clutched one-half of his father’s face; held there by the eye socket. After the police followed the bloody trail back to his house, the word was that some of them had to be consoled; and a few ended up sick after observing what they had stumbled upon at the scene. Strewn about the house were pieces of his father’s corpse. His mother’s naked, headless corpse was hanging upside down in the doorway of the kitchen. Using rusty rail spikes, Andrew nailed her feet and shins to the wall just above the doorframe. The dog’s food bowl contained her head and he placed the dog’s water bowl right underneath her neck. Word has it that the water bowl was overflowing with blood…and all over the kitchen floor. He had raped, mutilated, and beheaded his sister. With brutal force, he then shoved the dog’s head so far up her vagina that her vulva had split sideways and down to her rectum. The rest of the headless dog was smoldering in the oven.

The authorities committed Andrew to a hospital for the criminally insane where eventually one night, the staff and the security guards tied him down and beat him beyond recognition. Andrew died from his wounds and the hospital officials claimed it was “self-defense” so ends the story of the misunderstood Andrew. It was the Beast who guided his hand.

I returned it to the library last month because I started this thread and needed to read "Dr. Sleep" instead.

I had to unpack my books (recently moved) so I could start Dr. Sleep. My daughter bought it for me a while back. I was gonna check it out from the library and she reminded me that I have it.

I started reading the book. A few pages. Seemed it would be good. Fearful that it was written for juveniles.

Yes, he does dabble with writing other genres. Mr. Mercedes was mentioned. And now, I'm recalling "Eyes of a Dragon" I read as a child and my daughter is reading now.

Ok. I like all horror as long as the writing is above college level.

Do you have a better education than a church minister and Egyptologist?

Sorry you are supposed to be a Dxp member...with all these brains— Hmmm

I don't know what you mean by "better." I have a bachelors in Fine Art with a focus in Sculpture a bachelors in Mass Comm and an MSM...

And, it's more about my personality. I want depth to match my life.

I don't enjoy pop fiction "easy readers." I'm deeper than that. I like philosophy and historical biographies.

Please...do yourself a favor and read

rhis book...yes I am biased but a lot of people who don’t know the author are amazed...

Storybook

Is he still writing horrors or is he still writing the continuations of dark tower?

He writing more to Dark Tower?

All of his books are horrors and he's still writing. I have several I haven't read yet. Now, that I'm no longer managing people, I can enjoy.

Not all of his books are horror. He tried getting out of horror with a pseudonym Robert something or other

Anyways, did you ever read his book of short stories? I can’t remember the name of it. They were 4 short stories one of which was Shawshank redemption

I know about that attempt under a pseudonym. "Stephen King" novels are horror.

He has many short stories. The most recent I have is "Everything's Eventual." Haven't read it yet.

Yes, I only read "Apt Pupil" from "Different Seasons," if I recall.

My favorite King compilation is "Skeleton Crew." Favorite short story from that was "Survivor Type."

It was different seasons

Everything’s eventual sounds very very familiar for some reason

I havent read a book by him in awhile so I can’t remember everything

Did you read the book about the girl lost in the woods? I can’t remember the name

Is dr sleep a more recent book? What is it about?

I posted in this thread that it's part 2 to "The Shining" and briefed what I like so far from the 1st chapter.
