I don't think it's a test. They just play too much and say stuff they don't mean. If the Gemini is saying this but still sticking around, just show him that you like him. He may not be clear on your intentions with him.
But it also depends on the context in when/ how he said it.
Were you questioning him or did he randomly say it? Were you showing insecurities?
Geminis go with the flow pretty well and if they are sticking with you, it's because they like you. So if it's been a while, you see him often, you don't even need to question it, you just say whatever we are together. They don't care too much about titles when they like you.
