Did you know that Asthma is considered an Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder?
Obstructive = means to prevent
Pulmonary = related to the lungs
Those with asthma have airways that are particularly sensitive to cold or dry air. These things irritate and inflame the smooth muscles in their respiratory tract, especially the bronchioles of the respiratory tract, where air must be passed on to the gas exchange zone.
When the bronchioles narrow, the flow of air in and out of the lungs is prevented, ultimately resulting in the following symptoms.
- Coughing, especially at night
- Wheezing
- Shortness of breath
- Chest tightness, pain, or pressure
