Totally missing the point. A lot of his advice was given in a self-deprecatory manner. And it was never about looks. He was an alcoholic and heavy smoker, and the biggest thing that attracted women to him was the fact that he was emotionally unattainable to them and that he didn't give 2 fucks about what people thought of him. Especially the women.
Basically he was an asshole. And he didn't care. He only cared about his writing.

Anyway.Bukowski was a writer. It's important to remember that.
His imperfect, angst-ridden, opinionated, gloriously irreverent self finds complete justification in his craft. He took all that madness and turned it into near-perfect stylistic cadence.
I'm not a Bukowski fan. His material just doesn't suit my tastes. But his stuff reads like EB White's essays. Beautifully clear, precise writing, in which every word tells. White was half of Strunk & White's Elements of style. EB White co-authored the book for writers. It's a classic, but still as relevant today (especially today) as it was 50+ years ago. So I'll praise anything that reminds me of White. The subject can be drywall installation; I'll read it because I know it'll make drywall installation sound sublime.
No one needs to like Bukowski and his life-choices, or agree with his personal views or "advice." If it's taken too literally, or divorced from the context of his life as a writer, or if it's misused as some form of primer on marketable social skills, then you'll have missed the point entirely, along with whatever wisdom is stirring just beneath the surface.
It isn't just about knowing how to read. It's about knowing how to read, particularly in context, not just in terms of story and plot, but also in terms of someone confronting the enormity of their art - what they do to it, and what it does to them.
