Canceronthecusp: I've toyed with it but it seems like everyone does steampunk. I'm actually thinking something lunar and possibly borderline topless. Trust me, what's in my head is far from trashy! Think ultimate glam!

Don't:
Do anything Star Trek or any other major syndicated series (Including the revamped Galactica).
Exception is cult series like Firefly or Farscape

Do anime figures. They're all over the place.

Do Star Wars or Fifth Element. My friends and I had a little contest to tally the number of slave princess Leias and Leelus (Fifth Element) that we could see.

Do:
If you can work with latex, body paint, and blend it to look seamless (as a female), you can get a lot of pictures taken.
If you can put something in your getup that hints of something in popular culture but is slightly "off", it would work.

Lunar might work with pale (not white) paint with hints of color.

No, the don'ts are far too obvious and over done, not to mention very ComicCon. I'm definitely going for obscure.

I've found a ton of cosplay that did an excellent job! Not sure which one is the one you're describing.

Wow that looks like a huge convention. Someone pick me up so I can go! Haha

But really, for just one year, those are a lot of creative costumes in one place. Looks really awesome. I wish they had bigger conventions around my hometown.

What some people do to make a costume sort of staggers the mind with the creativity, especially considering they aren't all in some sort of costume or special effects business. You two should go! Like seriously!
