I took my CPC exam last June. My CPC-A is from AAPC.Yes, my professor warned me that new coding graduates with 0 experience in the medical field are not likely to get job offers (which I did experience first hand; “call us when you have a year under your belt” is essentially the response I kept getting). She told us that we’d have to start via volunteering/job shadowing since there’s no project xtern in our city.

I’ve called it “job shadow” in the past, and that picture of my volunteer registration (the paper that said “VOLUNTEER PLACEMENT” at the top) even said it was “job shadow”, you dingus. Here’s a refresher of last time we had this convo:

Sorry I don’t think it’s too dangerous to use the two terms interchangeably when the work I was doing wasn’t too profound. If it was work at a food bank or soup kitchen I could see why it matters. But considering all I did was data entry I’m struggling to see how telling someone I “volunteer in a billing department” is misleading compared to “I job shadowed in a billing department” 🤷♀️ It’s the same work.

But we also learned how to check the payments on the accounts and see what’s up with insurance (if they denied it, if there’s been appeals, etc.)My job was to literally check the status of appeals, record how much money the patient owed, etc.

How many times do I have to tell you I volunteered in the billing department under the promise that after a few months I’d get transferred to the coding department?I don’t know how that chain of events is so hard for you to follow. It was cut and dry when the volunteer coordinator told me one of their coding volunteers was set to finish their position three months after I had signed up.

If I could go back in time and do things different, it would just be to not take screenshots of the convo I had with the man, period. What the only person I chose to send them to chose to do with them was out of my power, and not something I foreshadowed or intended.
