Yes, Fifty Shades of Grey is more appalling than appealing. It's domestic violence dressed up as erotica??_ and if there's one thing this movie is not, it's erotic."

I barely read through the first chapter without wanting to gag. I used to be involved in fanfiction ages ago and I was absolutely amazed that this made it to a publisher. That chick mary sued the shit out of this story. It wasn't unusual to see a lot of stories written like this- the main character was just a projection of the author who had trouble with guys and in her stories, she was secretly desired by this stud of a character.

I also found it interesting that this was linked within the story-

Reminds me way too much of the women that show up here, seeking advice for their situations.

50 shades of gray: malicious threat to the nuclear family, femininity as we know it, mothers/daughters/wives, the ~*sanctity of lovemaking

before you know it, we'll all be fornicating with guinea pigs & spare auto parts!!!!!! HALP

except the bottom line is, it's another of many erotic fiction novels. nothing previously unheard of. since the plot focuses on middle-aged people & BDSM, it's irrelevant to my interests. so I most likely won't read the book, nor watch the film.

a few scattered points of curiosity--how did the book manage to sell mad copies? better-composed than the multitude of erotic/romance novels of the same ilk? superior promotional strategies? or was it a big deal due to its perceived controversy?

TBH i can't knock it for the simple fact that 50 Shades of Gray never fails to infuriate the religious right & MRA neckbeards. Merely mentioning the title of the book is all it takes to effectively troll these crowds. 😄

But the thing is that it's not quite bdsm and it's borderline abuse.

I think the book sold so many copies because nobody had heard of Harlequin romance novels tbh....

I'm all for some steamy erotica reading, but I refuse to insult my intelligence by reading something that poorly written. I can't even imagine how they could possibly turn it into a movie worth watching unless they completely rewrite it, and the characters.

My thoughts exactly. I have no intention of seeing the movie since the book - which is always better - was so bad.

This is why I loled when someone reviewed it and absolutely bashed it.

I'll be curious to see what the consensus is in the US come tomorrow.

it's still 9 1/2 weeks for me.

adrian lyne needs to make a cuckolding movie!

9 1/2 weeks all the way for me too.

But Secretary shows the 'darker' side of a BDSM relationship, which is good.

Both equally good though.

FSOG does so much disservice to players in the BDSM community.

This is what I keep hearing a lot of- those in the BDSM community are pissed because this book is full of shit in regard to THEIR lifestyles. I heard a headline on the local news station about the "controversy" this book has with some domnatrix(es?). It's like they're just pissed because this book is false representation and confusing abuse and rape with BDSM.

Considering who wrote the book, it's not surprising.

My heart goes out to all males who now have yet another female princess fantasy/expectation/ to live up to. They should have left this book between it's covers. This book was written by a woman in her 50's going through a mid-life crisis. DRAMA...not surprised by LEO MOON either. Pisces Sun...I get it..a fantasy that should have stayed in her head, however the Leo Moon & Leo Mars needed attention, not to mention the 4 retrogrades... Lonely, lost and desperate woman.

"Three-and-a-half years ago, Erika Leonard was virtually anonymous -- a wife, mother and former TV executive whose fan-fiction occasionally appeared on a website under the pseudonym Snowqueens Icedragon. Then the unassuming Brit hit what she called a "mid-life crisis, writ large" -- and she began to write. And write. And write."

E.L.: "I don't know. I mean, there is one thing. I have a very, very active imagination, and I've been a daydreamer all my life. And through these books, I've finally found a way to channel all this daydreaming, which has been a revelation for me."

Marlo: "Let's talk about Ana a bit. She's so innocent, which reminds us all of that time in our own lives when we were naive and exploring new things. But Ana soon discovers she's able to negotiate with Christian. That's strength. As a woman and a feminist, I love that. Here Ana was being victimized, but she wasn't a victim. She found a way to define her boundaries and --"

E.L.: "I wouldn't say that Ana's being victimized at all."

Marlo: "You wouldn't?"

E.L.: "No. I think she was being sort of hurried into a relationship she wasn't sure about. But victimized? No, I don't think so."

Secretary was a great movie.

Fifty shades of grey is just another passing twilight.

I disagree.

Sparkly vampires and werewolves are more realistic than college virgin twits who never heard of sex.

I mean how it's blown up as a stupid trend... Like all stupid trends...I didn't say either of them were realistic lol

lol I know. 😛

I was just taking yet another stab at 50 Shades of Crap.

i wont even bother spending $ $ $ on the theatres for this film. If it goes on Netflix, i'll take a peek though. Same here, i was on fanfiction with Harry Potter fandom and stuff, so i know what you mean. There's alot of females there that are dreaming too much of a certain type of boy. Which is what authors try to "live" up to to get reviews/ratings and yes, popularity. i dont know if it's a fantasy in HER head, but more of popularity points/going with what viewers want. I mean she IS married with children, and she might be doing this stuff with her husband, who knows??

There are a million different emotions 1 book or movie can bring out of someone. Fiction attracts & affects people differently. And a lot of how it affects them depends on the mood, current life circumstances & mentality of the person who picks up the book. And b/c we're all different, it makes perfect sense that some understood the hype while others didn't.

All I'm saying is that while I can understand why some aren't impressed with the hype, I can also understand why some were fascinated with the storyline as a whole.

Erotica or 'wannabe erotica' has always been a supply/demand industry. Every sex toy won't succeed at bringing out the inner freak or erotica in you. But hey, you can't go knock the chick who says that it did. Every story that's meant to be inspiring or influential won't inspire or influence everybody who listens.

That's the best thing about creativity. It may captivate, inspire or in the least affect (even if in a bad way) 1 person, while completing boring and pissing off another. Neither person is in the wrong though. Neither emotion it pulls out of people (good or bad) is wrong or unusual.

Except that this garbage encourages women to tolerate abusive bullshit from guys. You of all people should realize this is a bad thing.
