And what's it like in other countries? I've  noticed there is very little insight in how things work behind the walls and what the work entails or the type of patients we get. I barely even knew it existed or in what form -  like someone once said to me; most professionals in other health care fields want to pretend it doesn't exist bc it's just barely compatible with the 'respect to autonomy' principle, and sure enough, cases could be made about that. Those few times you hear about such places is usually associated with malpractice or a scandal of some kind.

Also, any former patients here that want to share their experience(s)?

Local female politician, engaged in a women's shelter organisation among other things. Upon arriving diagnosed with BPD and grandiose delusional disorder and narcissistic p.d. She herself thinks of course it's a conspiracy against her and that the whole legal system, judges, local politician and specific journalists are involved.

Her story is detailed and elaborated, she's intelligent and very well spoken, if we had met someplace else I'd have probably believed her.

Her case goes at least 3 years back when her husband wanted a divorce and she couldn't handle it so she used her kids against him, claiming he has sexually molested them. I don't want to go into further details since she's a patient but none of this proved to be true and he finally decided after 2 years to let her have full custody and give up his kids bc he couldn't take the abuse any longer (in his own words).

In her mind, she was the one who wanted the divorce and that he was stalking her (text messeges and e-mail say otherwise).

Oh yeah.. and she's in here for stalking btw. Stalking him.

So I'm sitting there having to listen to her delusional nonsense and her hard ordeal and keep a straight face without going all Enfant on her.

This is a woman who's been a leading figure in a national women's shelter organisation whose basic principle is to keep women safe from abusive partners, yet there she is falsely accusing her husband of abuse and sexual abuse of their children.

There is a special place in hell.. js.

My first thought when it comes to these hospitals is how many of them are getting molested, raped, abused by the supposed " caretakers"

You've seen too many movies... that take place in the far past and in "mental hospitals" which had whole different types of patients. Such places don't really exist here anymore.

None of the patients we have are much different than the ppl you meet daily on the outside, these just happened to have comitted a crime.

But I got your "dig" at me, don't worry.

Enfant how many of the women who are under heavy medication have you played with ?

No one's under heavy medication in the sense that they won't or can't wake up. Also, we are not allowed into their rooms (except during inspection) and all the personnel has supervision over all of the ward at all times, so anyone getting any ideas of sneaking around (that goes for patients aswell) unnoticed will be disappointed.

How and why did you get into this business? Curious about the reason behind your career track?

I didn't actively pursue it, I applied for several different jobs in the health care field incl this one, not knowing exactly what it entails since it's pretty closed off. Tried it out and it was like a glove.

I guess I like the behavioral aspect of it, and the specifics of how disorders and illnesses affect ppl..

did you have to get an education/certification to work in that field?

I had to take a few additional courses in order to work here, I had the basic nursing assistant education going a decade back

What exactly do you do there

Be on the premises, keep close eye on the patients (there are no security guards and it's our job to break up any conflicts that might arise), take active part in their daily activities & rehabilitation. A lot of documentation. Assist in various types of therapy.

Let out patients on leave, let them back in. Search them. Search rooms.

The staff is divided into 3 groups each asigned a 'station' at the beginning of every shift divided as follows altough we mostly help eachother out

- Living area, kitchen, assisting in daily activities on the premises, visitors

- Administration, security, phone calls

- Therapeuric/rehab work, supervised activities outside the premises

Oh great, another narcissistic libra female.

How cliche.

I’m looking for the scandal.

When I took the job and before I started working I tried to look up online what to expect . It isn't until I started that I realized that these scandals were basically all hyped up by the media. Because they don't understand the procedure and why things have to be the way they are, even though they're covered in the law.

Nothing too juicy though.. One included a suicidal girl, around 20 I believe, who was deemed a danger to others bc she tried to set her apartment on fire. She was sent for a evaluation and sentenced to psychiatric care and was "locked up with rapists and pedophiles" according to the media.

In reality, there are no seperate wards in psychiatry for different types of crimes, only different security levels. So where exactly was she supposed to have been placed? She committed a crime, hence why she had to be under observation during her treatment. There may be or have been pedophiles and rapists receiving treatment aswell at the time she was there but no one has to interact with anyone if they don't wish to and there's personnel on the floor at all times.

Like right now we have a man almost 40 with Downs syndrome, though cognitively he's age 7 and we have to approach him as such. He's here for attempted manslaughter/rape . There are no forensic psychiatric wards for 'ppl with speshul needs' who commit crimes. Wouldn't surprise me if media made a scandal out of his case too..

Absolute bullshit

A nursing assistant would not be allowed to step foot in a psych ward where I’m from.

You did courses? Wtf is a course?

This is the most shit I’ve heard on DXpnet in a long time.

Fkn courses... lololol

Yeap, a few courses at the local community college to fill the gap. You're making it sound like what I'm doing is rocket science.

In Sweden there are several different areas you can pick while studying for nursing assistant, I didnt pick psychiatry back then so I basically had to account for the additional courses, I think there were three in total.

But we have one worker here who actually is just a nursing assistant, but due to his years of experience (he started in the late 70's) within forensic psychiatry he wasn't required the academic merits.

So much for 'where you come from' , eh? Do you always think things everywhere else are the way they are in your back yard?

Question:

What are the mental health campaigns like in Sweden? Or are there any?

Over here it's only done out of social obligation, in actual fact they don't really care about the mentally ill and consider them a financial liability. But that's Asian culture for you.

This is interesting but I can't really say we have any particular mental health campaigns. We have tons of campaigns for feeding third world countries and saving circus animals though..

But ppl are pretty open here regarding these matters, that's not to say there isn't a huge gap between the help ppl need and the help they get.

I've not experienced much stigma around mental health as there seems to be in other countries.. or it could be that the campaignes are an integral lowkey part of the society that I don't even pay attention to them.

They’ll take anyone as well, to fill the need and lack of supply.

This is true for literally every healthcare field in Sweden right now. Nurses assistants filling in for all kinds of floor work that normally would have required additional education/courses. It's a major crisis

I find a lot of doctors down here are not fit to diagnose if they got their education in australia.

They do less school than North America.

So many ppl told to go home and take a panadol for a headache and then end up dead.

Is it true that it's not a requirement for medical students in Australia to have a biology background if they want to become doctors?

This was something I heard from someone who was dating a pre-med guy in Sydney, but that was 20+ years ago.

Overworked and stressed. Prob leads workers to resentment etc. Frustration.

The boomers are dying so we are at a bottleneck.

So happy euthanasia was passed this week.

I think this crisis is a global one. We've been having the same crisis over here for the last 20+ years, ever since it became obvious to our govt that our population is not increasing fast enough to balance out with our ageing population.

Firstly

There is no criminal offence if it was committed in a state of mental incompetence.

Look

It

Up

You

Lazy

Leo

So please do me a favour and research the dsm 5 and have a real solid handle on your constitution which for all intents and purposes does not vilify the mentally ill like you have no stop.

When you’re a health professional

Fully qualified and REGISTERED you take an oath

First, do no harm

This basic maxim is universally sworn to protect patients from ⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️ Kinda shit.

I’ve had nurses fired for talking the way you do about patients. What happened to patient advocacy.

They don’t teach that in security school??

It’s one thing to trash a faceless poster on here but to attack the sick and infirmed?

Fuk you

First of all, I'm not a nurse or a doctor, I'm a mental health worker. So there go a lot of your arguments right out the window..

Second.. we are not allowed to speak about our patients and their circumstances to any third parties. However, as long as no names or other things that clearly point to their identity are mentioned basically nobody can forbid you to talk about your work.

You cannot link me to the place I work, or even who I am.. how are you going to identify the patients based on descriptions of behaviour and mental malfunctions, located in one small of many psychiatric wards in a town of many, in Sweden? Plz just shut up 🤣

Third.. just bc I work with people doesn't mean I don't have personal opinions about them or that I am not entitled to have one. In fact it would be inhuman not to. Ultimately it's about being professional when I'm doing the work, and not about my personal feelings.

And finally, a person who's committed a crime and brought in for evaluation is either deemed perfectly healthy and sentenced to prison or suffers from some mental condition or disorder which grants him a ticket for psychiatric care, where he remains until the staff of psychiatrics and nurses consider him rehabilitated and fit to live in a society without posing a danger to himself or others. Those are the two only options. I don't have to 'look it up'. I'm living it daily.

So... what do you do in Australia (was it?) with ppl who have committed a crime " in a state of mental incompetence"?

We have a lot of foreign doctors who should have been sent back to school when they entered Sweden, if the had a wish to practice medicine. A few unfit ones got through the cracks and eventually lost their license. Not before serious damage was done though. Fucking scary

Yep. So they’re taking young 20 yr olds with no empathy for the elderly. I mean it’s a lot of heavy lifting and I’m sure it’s emotional and most ppl don’t have patience.

Lol yeah I worked with "those" 20 year olds. Truly scary stuff. On their phones all the time, earphones while tending patients. Many of them just stop coming in, go for a break and never come back.

Ex refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, etc. who barely know Swedish are hired temporary to fill the gap in the staff shortages... this puts a lot of stress on the elderly who at the very least should be able to communicate with their caregivers. And how the fuck are these ppl expected to document shit if they only speak body language? Documentation can literally be the difference between life and death. It's a disaster beyond comprehension.

Mental health workers here have atleast a bachelors if not a masters in psychology or therapy

Psychiatrists have PhD

In Sweden we have something similar to yours "occupational schools" or whatever it's called where you can study everything from plumbing to nursing assistant and eventually pick a specific field such as geriatrics, psychiatry, etc.
